What a kindly, genial presence Mr. Hawes was amongst us! 'We all felt instinctively the generous, warm-hearted soul of the man--so calm, so steady, so optimistic always. He has the kind of personality which is immensely vital and, at the same time, is quiet and self-contained. mmm Such a raconteur! How his keen wit, his gleeful chuckle over some rare bit of humor, his dry, tongue-in-cheek style of telling a story, enlivened the school day for us. Teachers, students, alwmnieeveryone loves Mr. Hawes. He is Charlestown's own Mr. Chips! At school we saw Mr. Hawes as a teacher, and few of us had any compre- hension of the many and various facets of his versatile personality. A Harvard graduate, he is a true scholar, remarkably'well-oriented and keenly alive to the complex issues of our times. A veteran of w0r1d'war I, he contributed to the recent war effort in many concrete and practical ways. A musician, he plays the piano, the organ, and other instru ents, and is highly respected for his sincere musicianship. An amateur photographer, he has most generously beautified and enriched our Year Books year after year. A traveler, he has made firm friends in his many visits across the seas, and kept these friendships through the years. A gemmologist, he cuts and polishes semi-precious stones for his friends as a hobby. We could go on indefinitely with his talents. It would be impossible to imagine a man more free from pettiness and intolerance than Mr. Hawes. Such things have no place in his sincere, honest, all-embracing, and all-encompassing charity. Our school is not the same with- out him. Other teachers can teach what he taught, but no one else but Mr. Hawes can be what he was to us here at Charlestown. We shall miss the many acts of kindness and of love that so endeared him to us. To you, wise teacher, true scholarly gentleman, genial great-hearted friend, we say: nGod bless you and keep you alwaysln x Maw so Mary 11. Ruby YEAR BOOK PRINCIPALS fk Yve- Oo gf -y .
