Superintendent of Schools The Charlestown Schools endeavor to continually raise the quality of their educa- tional program by updating the curricular offerings, by modernizing the equipment and supplies used, by pro- viding for .greater comfort and better educational of- ferings by modernizing the buildings, and by keeping the faculty updated by inservice training workshops and the encouragement of further study. From that power springs all other powers of man over nature. In education, words are teaching tools, good Imu'hers use words that cre- ate moods and induce imag- ined experiences. We hope our students have had a world of these kind of expe- riences at Charlestown High SchooL Nancy Lisanby, School Clerk Joan Harmon, School Clerk Jack Risinger. Guidance has the important task of dis- covering the abilities and interests of the indi- vidual student and of leading him to partici- pate in such activities as will provide oppor- tunity for the development of these abilities and interests. A girlsi counselor, boysi counselor and guidance director are in charge of guidance activities of the school and work particularly with students in junior and senior high school. Students and their parents are urged to visit the guidance office and talk with the counselors. The guidance counselors help students: To schedule courses for the coming year To plan a tentative four year high school program of studies To make schedule changes after the se- mester begins To check credits To learn college entrance requirements To study college catalogs To secure information about different occupations To obtain permission to carry extra cred- its To make arrangements for standardized tests iaptitude, intelligence, subject matteri To obtain help in personal and social problems To arrange for part-time schedules x Lucille Ross, Librarian Ruby Bare, School Nurse Sharon Cools, Library Helper with helpers and students. ,, O The students at Charlestown High School are indeed fortunate to have a dedicated FACULTY at their disposal. These people spend long hours at their work, but they never seem too busy to give each stu- dent the time .and attention required to best illuminate individual spark. We salute this dedicated group of people and will always be appreciative ofthe unselfish way they have diligently worked. um F aculty Division Margaret Adell Bridges Betty Cleeler Virginia Flanagan Margaret Gilbert Bennett Earline Reich Objectives ofthis department are: To help the student develop the ability to express himself orally and on paper, clearly, accui'ately, fluently, totuurally, and evvectively. To acquire an appreciation and understanding ofthe different types ofliterature. To help the pupil use words orally and in writing correctly. To develop the desire to use correct, effective English. English Department Harlan Belts Ray Chambers Larry Dean Robert Johnson Tom Narron Marcella Stewart Mathematics holds the pre-eminent position of being the basic subject for all the other sciences. Thus, a more advanced curriculum in mathe- matics is offered in order for us to meet our obligations to those students who wish to prepare themselves for careers in professions and go on to higher learning. In addition, mathematics has an innate characteristic of training the mind in the scientific attitude, attacking problems from an objective viewpoint. Math Department Saundra Bond Robert Pearson Sidney 0,Brian, Dale Tilleu, Cary Stewart, Larry Ashby, Donna Pemberton, Mrs. Saundra Bond, Shirlee Garrett, Chris Hardin. Art Department David Moss Barry Smith M usic Department Mr. David Moss, Margaret Conley, Gail Risinger, Dal- las Heltsley, Jo Ann Prather. Marie Couch Gaylord Combs me. The philosophy of the health education department is to instruct the pupils in the basic facts concerning disease and health so that they will protect their own health and that of their dependents. Also to influence them in the development of better attitudes and habits and to help them understand that health is a means to an end; it is not the goal itself. It aims to promote the happiest and best life attainable. The philosophy of the physical education department is, in so far as it is possible, our pupils are to be given the op- portunity and encouragement to attain the optimism of self- realization in the development of a sound body, a discip- lined mind and a sound character. Although we are of greater importance is the development of an appreciation for proper values, attitudes and ideals. Louis Kleopfer Home Economics Gretchen Anderson Mary Earp Janet MeLemore The duty of the home economics staff is to provide in- struction which will equip families with the ability to im- prove the quality of their family life through more efficient development and utilization of human and material re- sources. It is with this in mind that we face the task of teaching our girls. Agriculture We are aware that only two out of ten farm boys complete a full four year college course. We are also i aware of the fact that approximately the same percen- I : tage remain on the farm. Our students are trained and taught to take their positions in society in their com- munity, as leaders. They are each trained in coopera- i tion such as group programs, fund raising, conducting meetings and taking part in them, attending and tak- 5 ing part in county, district, and state F.F.A. meetings. Each boy is trained to conduct meetings in observance of the Robertis Rules of Order. Joe Williams Revel Breeding Margaret Cochran Carlos Friend Mable Swain Frank Mullins, Norman Kalkhoff, Margaret Cochran, Vickie Kemp, Rita Goodlett. Business Department Cu rol Briganee Scott Du ugherty ,h. We believe that the first duty of our department is to offer vocational training to students who, when graduating from high school, will need to go to work to support or help support themselves. Our students should be well enough trained, after taking all the courses offered by this department, to obtain a job as a typist, secretary, stenographer, or a general of ice worker without any further training. We believe all students should have a basic knowledge of business, and the college bound one should certainly have this. We believe that each student in a skill training course like business should be al- lowed to advance at his own rate of speed. This will permit him to excel as high as his aptitude will permit. Roxie Minus 22 Social S tudies Clydu Lutz Charles Reinbold William Dunn Charles New We believe that each student should be afforded the opportun- ity to learn of our American Dem- ocratic Heritage. It is our desire that each student learn how this democratic heritage was devel- oped, fought for, preserved, and the measures taken today to fit our heritage of freedom into the everyday living theme of all the countries of the world. It is the hope of the Social Stud- ies Committee that the graduating seniors will have gained an in- sight into the social, political, and economic realities around them and will have acquired the capac- ity to deal with those realities objectively and competently. Dolores Steinhauer John Patterson Terry Thompson F oreign Language Michael Gohmann ' I ndustrial Arts in each pupil an active interest in industrial life and in the methods of production and exchange; to develop the habits of self reli- ance and resourcefulness in meeting practical situations; to develop a feeling ofpride in his ability to do useful things and to certain wor- thy free-time interest; to develop in each pu- pil an understanding of all kinds of common graphic representations and the ability to express ideas by means of drawings and sketches; and to develop in each pupil skill in the use of common tools and machines and an understanding of problems involved in com- mon types of construction and repair. James Congleton Lowell Whitehead 3 4 Some of the objectives of it are to develop IN MEMORIAM LUCILLE B. BOWEN . One of naturets happiest moulds, Mrs. Lucille B. . As we leave the hallways ofCHS to meet the challenges of the adult world, the SENIORS leave behind their deepest appreciation for the extensive help given them by faculty and administration to help them face these challenges well prepared and confident. We realize that these four years have been an experience that we shall always recall with a slight tear in our eye. Too often we forget to be appreciative of what has been done for us, but as graduation draws near and we reflect back on past events, we know that the years here have been well spent. These stu- dents are looking forward to their final year with great anticipa- tion, but the many events of this year keep them calm enough to make their Junior year a great success. There are sweatshirts and magazines to sell. There is a banquet and prom to organize. Realizing that a good foundation has been laid for their educa- tion, these students turn their eyes toward the future with a great deal of maturity and confidence. We will never forget her and shall always be thankful to have shared her friendship and the experience of these years together. Her schoolwork was outstanding and her grades were high, yet she still freely gave time to join with us in almost all extra-curricular activi- ties: clubs, athletics, plays, parties, and informal gPI-lngethers in her home or ours. She planned to go to college and to travel and to do so many things. She would have done them. too, had time been allowed her. Her plans 1 er not dreams, they were goals that she in- tended to reach. She was purposeful and reliable and walked with her dignity among us. Her integrity has survived as a challenge to us. She was a master of the art of making good- !th attractive. She has departed from us, but she will live on in our memories; and we shall cher- ish them always. 61 99$. .. 04049 4 N; -4Owtas 0,? 5;. .MQWLWAIVE ,V . ., Q'grih . 2.: x E....:..... . y : Egg... .. National Honor Society The Jonathan Jennings Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools in Charlestown High School is chartered and organized under the auspices of the National Council of the National Honor Society. The objectives of this chapter are to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encour- age the development of character in students of Charlestown High School. Membership in the National Honor Society is based on scholarship, leadership, character, and service. Students are nominated and elected into the society by the teachers on those qualifications. The required scholastic grade is a htBh average. If a student should fall and remain below this average, he will no longer be consid- ered a member. Fifteen per cent of the senior class, ten per cent of the junior class, and five per cent of the sophomore class are selected for membership.
