H. S. , which was then at the Jonathan Jennings building. Afer all of the other classes had elected their class officers for the year we decided to elect ours. Clifton Meador was elected Presi- dent of the class, Vice-President, Herbert Johnson; Secre- tary-Treasurer Robert Campbell. Later in the year we were awarded a social affair and decided to have a skating party with our sponsors Billy Able and Mabel Swain. We came back our SOphornore year with a class enroll- ment of one hundred five. Our officers for this year were: President-Stanley Bartholomai; Vice-President-Otis Webb and Secretary-Treasurer-Beverly Reis. This was our first year in the new high school building. We went to Spring Mill State Park for our outing in the spring with Ray Henegar and Letcher Norton our sponsors. In 1954 seventy-eight juniors came back enthusiastic about this the year with a lot of hard work ahead. Class officers were: President-Stanley Bartholomai; Vice-Presi- dent-Herbie Johnson; and Secretary-Treasurer-Lana Sher- man. We sold concessions at ball games to earn funds to sponsor the Junior-Senior Prom. Choosing a Night Club Scene for the theme of the Prom, we began immediately working on it to please the seniors. Our class play was The Elusive Bachelor . Then 1955 rolled around and we started our final year in C.H.S. with 79 seniors. Our class officers were: Presi- dent-Bill Crace; Vice-President-Stanley Bartholomai; Secretary-Treasurer-Dorothy Witten. We chose Mrs. Charlotte Peavey and Mr. Jack Gipson as our sponsors . Our chief money making venture was selling concessions at f the ball games, in the beautiful new gym. Our class play was The Perfect Idiot . We also sold Christmas trees to help pay the expenses of our senior trip to Chicago. As we Seniors leave C. H. S. we take with us fond mem- ories of the many good times we have had, of friends and teachers, also we wish the best of everything to the classes that follow. , .,., -- ., , .., , WW ,. W Bright and early in the morning of May 16, sixty-six eager Seniors left Charlestown bound for Chicago, along with Mr. and Mrs. Kynard Taff, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Ross, Mr. Gipson and Mrs. Peavey, we were ready for three days and nights of fun. The driver of the leading bus was Uncle Milty , and the next bus was driven by Joe . Our first stop was at Seymour, Indiana where some of us ate a late breakfast while others sent post cards. The next st0p was at Purdue University for lunch and sight-seeing of the campus. To entertain ourselves while riding, we sang, camera hawks waited for a chance at a good shot, and a few futile attempts were made to sleep. About 5:30 p. m. we began to see in the distance faint lines of tall build- ings and we began to drive along crowded streets. We then took a route along Lake Michigan and as far as the eye could see stretched gray water, above it flew white sea gulls. In the diming light we could see the tall hotels and lights of down-town Chicago. By 6:30 everyone had been as signed a room in the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Some of us had a view of the lake and beautiful Grant Park. The foremost thought in everyone's mind was refreshing ourselves and eating. This was our free night and some of the group went on a tour of Chicago and Chinatown, others to a movie, while the rest stayed at the hotel or did various other things. About mid-night, however, everyone livened up, there were parties in some of the rooms, and we kept the elevators busy. Some of the adventurous ones explored the hotel, twhich, incidently, was about twenty-nine floors high and having 3, 000 roomsi. From amp the roof gardens they found a spec- tacular view of Chicago at mid-night. Everywhere lights blinked, neon signs beckoned, buildings were lit up, and row on row of street lights stretched out on three sides and bordered the lake. Thursday morning the entire group toured the Board of Trade Building. From atop the forty-one story structure we looked down upon Chicago, the city of the big shoulders . Below and around us we saw massive buildings, streetcars, trucks, cars, and the continuous wave of people looked like toys. Some of the group toured the Adler Planetarium, others the Shedd Acquaruim. Both were unusual and inte resting. In the Planetaruim we were given a lec- ture'about the planets and stars. At the acquaruim we saw many different kinds of fish in tanks resembling their natural habitats. The baseball fans went to Cominsky Park to see the White Sox and the Yankees play. The Mu- seum of Natural History we saw many interesting exhibits including dinosaur fossils. At 6:00 o'clock we had a banquet in the beautiful Coffee Shop of the hotel. Afterwards, we saw Cinerama Holiday a very entertaining 3-D movie. Some of us took our first subway ride. Friday morning was spent packing, shepping, sleeping and loafing. We visited Marshall Fields, a well-known department store. At 1:00 o'clock, we boarded the buses. As we left Chicago we stopped by the Museum of Science and Industry. Here, we were awed by practically every invention in United States history from a genuine Conestoga wagon and a stagecoach to a real sub- marine captured by the Navy, also a small coal mine in operation and a trans- parent WOman. Again we started the trip home and the card games, singing and sleeping were resumed, and we bade farewell to Chicago, the windy city .
