'1, v cuss 11mm Four years ago in the autumn of 1951 throngh the portals of Charles- town High School came 109 timid monsters. We were destined to bring pain to the many teachers we were to encounter. We soon settled down to the work at hand and elected our class officers who were to lead us in our devilment. The officers were: President, Leora. Hutchinson; Vice -President, Bobby Howard; Secre- tary-Treasurer, Pat Nickel. As class sponsor we chose Mr. James Eledge, but he later left the teaching staff and Mr. Osburn Flener became our advisor. We enjoyed a trip to Henryville and a class social that year. Not as many of us returned our second year, only 93 enrolling. We were one year closer to graduation, however, which brightened the picture. Our class elected Neal Jay to be our sponsor. To carry on the class business, we elected President, Don Lewis; Vice-Presi- dent, Guy Collins; and Secretary-Treasurer, June Beard. We took a. very enjoyable trip to Spring Mill the second semester and held a skat- ing party the first semester. Our Junior year was indeed an important one; we moved into a beautiful new school. Only 64 students came back. To lead us we elected President, Don Lewis; Vice-President, Guy Collins; and Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Markham. Our spOnsor was Mr. Os- burn Flener. We had no social activity the first semester, but we presented our Junior Class play, Off The Track in the fall. In May, after much planning and hard work, we gave a prom and banquet for the graduating seniors. Well, we're finally here! We're the honored seniors! There are 56 of us left. Our officers for the final year are: President, Wade Morgan; Vice-President, Lowell Howard; and Secretary-Treasurer, Evelyn Markham. As our sponsor, we chose Mr. Letcher Norton. Through all the hustle and bustle of graduation preparations, we managed to present our Senior Play, Comin' Round The Mountain in the spring of 1955. In May of 1955, we journeyed to our country's capitol, Washington D. C. , on our Senior Trip. It took lots of scrimping and saving but we finally made it. We leave C, H. S. with many friends and memories, but we leave behind many happy schooldays. We seniors would like to thank Mr. Bennett, our principal, for our four years of high school, and the many teachers who helped us down the long road to graduation. Also, from the Seniors, the best of luck to the classes that follOw behind us. In 1925, Mrs. John Sweeney, left; and Mrs. Alyce Simmons, right, graduated from CBS. Thirty years later their children, two sets of twins, Ronnie and Donnie Van Pelt and Alyce and Beryl Simmons are in the graduating class of 1955! Dean Wince Janice Wirth Joyce Wirth Loren Zollman ,1- ,nm .-.- : h. SENIOR TRIP OF 1955 The Charlestown Senior Class launched their Senior trip at the High School Wednesday, May 25, at 9:00 a. m. All the underclassmen bid us a fond and tearful farewell. The all-day and all-night trip was one continuous ball. We ate lunch in Ohio, supper in West Virginia, and breakfast in Washington D. C. The night was spent trying to keep our ears from popping as we went through mountains in West Virginia. We arrived in Washington at 5 a. m. After breakfast we went to a hotel room and changed clothes for our tour. As we couldn't check into our rooms at that hour, we had only two rooms, in which all of us had to clean up. It was a long hard process, but by 8 a. m. everyone was ready. Our guide on the tour was called Abe and he certainly showed us a wonderful time. The first stop on our agenda was the Bureau of Print- ing and Engraving where we saw them making one dollar bills. We then took a short tour of the White House where we saw the rooms where the President entertains. The next stop was the Washington Monument. Some hardy souls tried walking up, but the rest of us stuck to the elevator. We posed in front of the Capitol Building for a group picture and then took a tour of the building. We saw both the Senate and the House of Representatives in session. We found that our congressmen have to do plenty of walking around this huge building. After touring our very impressive Capitol we got a chance to rest our weary feet as we ate lunch in Alexandria, Virginia. Alexandria is a lovely, quaint town on the Potomac with several historical spots. When lunch was finished we spent part of the afternoon at Mt. Vernon. Here, overlooking the beautiful Potomac is the home of George and Martha Washington. Again we boarded the bus and were off for Arlington Cemetery in Washington. Here we saw the changing of the guard at the tOmb of the Unknown Soldier. This was a lovely and impressive scene. We then stopped at the new statue of the flag raising at Iwo Jima. Last, but not least was the Lincoln Memorial. This huge, marble statue is a masterpiece, and so lifelike it is almost eerie. We checked in our hotel rooms abOut 5:30 p. m. Most of the beys went swimming at a nearby hotel while the rest of us showered and tried, twell not too hardl to rest. We ate supper, looked at the shops and had a night on the town. Next morning at 9:30 we left D. C. for Charlestown, Indiana. On our way out we saw Embassy R0w with all its lovely homes and build- ings. We arrived at Gettysburg about noon and went on another tour. We saw most of the battlefield and cemetery, and got a glimpse of Eisenhower's farm. We ate dinner about four o'clock at Tuscarorra Summit in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. We stopped again at Pittsburg about 8:30 for supper, and from there we came straight through to Cincina- tti. We ate breakfast in Cincinatti at 5 a. m. We forty-five seniors, Miss Denney, and Mr. Norton arrived home about 8 a. m. We were the tiredest, and happiest group I ever expect to see. COMIN' ROUND THE MOUNTAIN Maw . . .
