SCIENCE Busy, busy, busy. That's the Charleston High School Science Department on any day. The-re's never a dull moment in any one of our school's fine science classes. Although biology is a required subject, chemistry and physics are for the student who wants to learn more about the physical and chemical nature of milffCI'. Crayfish bottled in formaldehyde, hydrometers, pycnometers, sulphuric acid, sulphur dioxidefall these and many more items can be found in one of the science laboratories. lt is here that students accomplish the practical application of what they have learned in class. Under the supervision of john M. Lowe, jr., the Science De- partment never ceases informing students of the marvels around them. It is not hard to see that teachers in this Department do their jobs well. Charleston High always has a high percentage of winners in the Science Fair, and on the various tests given in the school. HISTORY CECILE GOODALL LOIS REVERCOMB HELEN LESLIE Department Head American History American History American History Patty Teel, Martha Lamb, and Becky McCue cram for an American history test. 22 History is one of the most essential subjects taught in the high school, for only through the study of the past can men benefit from the mistakes of their predecessors and acquire the wisdom to solve the problems of the present successfully. Through the careful and patient instruction of history teachers, the ideals of democracy are passed from generation to generation and the American way of life is im- proved and advanced. The faculty members of the Charleston High School History Department, the head of which is Miss Cecile Goodall, are especially adept at present- ing their subjects in such manner as to create in the students an interest in and a desire for learning. In addition to classes in American and World History, classes are offered in sociology and prob- lems of democracy to advanced students.
