Watch it as it sweeps through the skies, listen to the pulsing of its mighty motors. Does it not truly typify the era in which we are living? Just as the pulsing of the airship's motors sym- bolizes the progress ot a world, so does the pulsing of LIFE through the halls and in the classrooms of CHARLESTON HIGH SCHOOL symbolize our prog- ress in education. Through them and their guidance we have been able to win honors, not only for ourselves, but also for our school. May we always remember the fine example which they have set for us. Kanawha County schools are indeed fortu- nate in having a superintendent and Board of Education who are so vitally interested in education and its advancement. ln the last few years Kanawha County has forged ahead in the field of education to the extent that Charleston is soon to have a new high school. lt will cut almost in half the present enrollment of CHS, much to the benefit of the high school students of Charleston. This is only a part of an exten- sive building and repair program for the entire county, which is now under way. R. J. GORMAN County Supervisor of High Schools VIRGIL L. FLlNN ' County Superintendent of Schools Charleston High School, the largest of a group of thirteen high schools which make up the secondary educational unit of Kanawha County, is governed by a board of five members. These men are elected by the people to serve a four-year term. From their number a president is chosen. ln their hands is the difficult task of guiding the entire educational system of Kanawha county. The board appoints a county superintendent and six assistants, one of whom is in charge of high schools. Members of the board are: :ja A R. . Robertson, president.. .... Charleston H. L. Snyder... .......... . ......... Charleston N. N. Snyder. .... ....... . .. .... Clendenin H. T. Crawford --..... .....St, Albans T. J. Grizzell .. ..... Kayford :51Due to the death, in March, of O. T. Jenkins, president R. A. Robertson was chosen to act as president for the remainder of the term. W XXXL If '2 TO THE STUDENTS OE CHSf4 The theme for the Charlestonian serves to remind us of the changes which are taking place in the world. Tennyson in his immortal poem Locksley Hall says: Saw the heavens fill with commerce, argosics of magic sails, Pilots of the purple twilight, dropping down with costly bales, Heard the heavens fill with shouting, and there rained a ghastly dew From the nations' airy navies grappling in the central blue, At the time Tennyson penned these lines of poetry no one took his ideas of aviation seriously. People thought his reference to airy navies was only the extravagant flight of the U simagination. Yet, within a century, this poetic extravaganza has become true. The fact that change is taking place so rapidly emphasizes the importance of education in the affairs of life. Education is the process whereby youth is prepared for the eventualities of a rapidly changing world. Uneducated youth flounders in the cross currents of change, loses altitude, and lacks determination to take off again. Educated youth meets the vagaries of change, takes them with the stick pulled back, rides out the variable currents of chance, and sails away into the blue atmosphere of life, achieving success and making satisfactory social adjustment. ln aviation, ground work training is basic experience which the aviator must master before he is able to fly. He must know how to read the compass, sextant, and altimeter. He must know how to figure distance, miles per hour, and position. He must know how to write the log of his flight and communicate orally with the radio operators along the way. He must know the laws of gravitation and other scientific information. He must know the technique of the operation of a plane and, finally, he must be able to think logically about all matters incident to flying. Charleston High School endeavors to give the youth it is serving ground work training fundamental in preparation for complete living. This ground work training is the ability to read with speed and comprehension, the power to use newspapers, books, and libraries to gain information, proficiency in express.on, oral, written, and graphicg proficiency in the funda- mentals of calculation, understanding and appreciation of common scientific phenomena, ability to make intelligent use of scientific devices necessary in life's activities, and proficiency in the tools of thought. Thus, the youth in Charleston High School is trained to wing its way to wholesome and complete living in a rapidly changing world. These administrators have made student-faculty relations pleasant and easy as well as helpful and desirable. They have served as beacon lights on our uncertain voyage into a bewildering maze of newness. The precision with which they work has been our gain, for from it we are enabled to get the most from our student life, not only as related to scholarship, but also as to leadership, recreation, and social affairs about the school. The purpose of the Book Strap is to inform the students about what is taking place in the School Community, to disseminate the news, and to aid in bringing together the school, the home, and the community. For several years it has been a weekly publication and is a member of the National Scholastic Press Association. In March, several delegates were sent to the national convention in New York with money raised by the staff. Among novel methods of raising this money were a gridiron dinner, a newspaper we-give- no-change sale, and an all-school Varsity Show. O PORTFOLIO The staff for the i939 Portfolio, the literary publication of CHS, was organized late in February with Miss Knight as faculty adviser. Mary Frances Kessler was elected editor-in-chief with Dan Oliver as associate editor. Under their supervision the outstanding literary work of CHS students was examined, and careful selections of their best work made. The club programs this year have been devoted to play-reviews, talent demonstrations, one-act plays, and the study of directing, acting, and make-up. The club presented several assembly plays during the year and an attractive program of well-known one-act plays is being prepared for its next year's activities, It is hoped that every interested sophomore may engage in the drama and its associated fields. The officers are as follows: president, Margaret l-liner, vice president, S. M. Croft, secre- tary, Acacia Crowell, and treasurer, Jane Barksdale. i .-u11v-1-1 CURTAIN AND MASK To be or not to be, that is the question in the minds of most of the members of our dramatic society, and indeed, in a few years a number of these members will probably be occu- pying the shoes of Gable, l-layes, and Lunt. The club's program this year consisted of several one-act plays and a major production, Pride and Prejudice, one of the most ambitious undertakings in the history of the club. Participation by several of the members in the annual all-state play contest completed a most successful season. The officers are: Will Miller, presi- dent, Amelia Barringer, secretary, Bette Downs, treasurer. . H 1 t iiii J NATIONAL THESPIANS The highest honor a high school student can achieve in the drama world of CHS is to become a Thespian. Our troupe, ZOO, was organized in l932 and because of its high standards of dramatic ability and subsequent successful productions it is one of the most sought-after organizations in the school. Every year the Thespians take a one-act play to the West Virginia festival, and the plaques which line the walls of 3l7 stand as testimony to their many successes. Since the group is not active at any other time during the year, there are no officers elected, Lawrence W. Smith is the sponsor. Ju, ff- ' . . Williams, reached a peak of brilliant performance during the past year, having been acclaimed by numerous sport's-writers and commentators as being one of the finest marching bands in the state. ln addition to playing for eighteen football games, to an estimated crowd of one hundred thousand people, the band has been much on call for outstanding stare sectional events. Two formal concerts were presented and were enthusiastically received by large crowds. The band is looking forward to the National Band Contcst this spring in Louisville, Ky., from which Mr. Williams hopes to bring back honors. The band officers are: John O'Conner, Billy Calhoun, Robert McKinnon, Arthur Walker, Charles Bettinger, Bob Stephens, S Ss A is i s T24 'X ll? Pills' wx? Nl ORCHESTRA The orchestra, conducted by Mr. Williams, furnishes music for school entertainments. ln April its annual concert was presented, which was pronounced a success by all who attended. This group shows constant increase in numbers and improvement of musical standards. Twenty members were selected to play in the state orchestra. Quality of music is stressed, since as a goal it is hoped that the orchestra may attain entrance in national competition. A con- sisten' growth during the last few years would seem to indicate realization of this goal. . w 'i .1-fi' ' x Q 'Za ' 'A fig' N 'xiii :UW . 5 DITORJXM STA O Vuqmm O'l7L-Il Mnr:1m'i'i .7.1hm'is V-'xwm wave'-wr FXw!F1I1w,x!cr 1.1mCsRwu.1.m lhlcklwl Mnllwx Martha Clrlw-.mv Mmm S1,1l:v.1l10r' ART SW AVF C Lharlux Smncrx wlh Hotiy Huwks AIfrcdS1uru- fyvorqv SIFIKICC NGN 5Yu L' Dona Crxmrmctf Paul Emlcx Jack Hmyx Iohr1SoWvla Wlifh lx -rw , IUSI NESS MANAC U L AYhur+1uw Mm' Ohm Alix-.lun Nnihmw lkmlwl i'hi1Nm1h LITERARY STAFF O Mary Boettcher Buckner Morris Mary Frances Kessler Jean Weller Earl Hastings Reasa Gardner Martha Midkift Jean Robinson Mary Lou DeVinney Martha Gibson Margaret Zaharis George Patrick Billy Best Tom North James Riordan Josephine Wright Virginia O'DelI Jean Hornor Margaret White Jeanne Moses Joan Simms Kathleen Miller Paul Fitzwater Charles Watts Reba Erskine Henry Swoope Mae Ola Bryan Patricia Holz Carl Rose Will Miller James Fisher BUSINESS STAFF I Nathan Baker Phil North Marioric Wintz Olga Austin Katherine Cline Martha McClure Ollie May McGuire Nancy Jo Counts Emily England Barbara Moores Ruth Reed Nancy Delaney Mary Bowles Roselle Dietz Mr, Flack Nancy Watts Betty Wells Jacqueline Gamst Bill Moss Robert Brubeck Ruth Byrd Janice Rohr CHARLESTONIAN Once again sales talks were prepared and the halls were a riot ot gaily-colored posters, informing the students of CHS that reservations tor the Charlestonian were open. The Lions looked their best on their trips into the southern section of the state where they emerged victorious three out of four times, And yet we may call the season a success because we beat Huntington in a thrilling game 43-3l. Ferg Giannakis, a guard playing his last year for CHS, made from his back-court position close to eighty points, which placed him among the leading scorers. Fred Mandt, the big blonde, was a demon under the basket, Because of his huge frame Freddy was our boogey-bear. He led the Lions in scoring by tallying some ZOO points, averaging close to I4 points a game. Richard Lewis, forward, played his second year on the varsity squad. Dick was one of the leading scorers. The year of '38 was no exception and brought to light such an aggregation ot stalwart athletes. Under the able direction of Coach Garrity these boys competed in seven meets and achieved an enviable record in state-wide competition. Among outstanding accomplish- ments, Bill Pemberton clipped two seconds off the seventy yard dash record, and Bob Hanna set a new high in the two hundred yard low hurdles event, Captain Roland Lucas set a state record in the mile, Barnett running second to Lucas in all mile events. Scores for the Lions were made by Giannakis, Lewis, Ezell, Gregor, and Schrader while little Roger Hiersioux chalked up for the Irish. Next we found a hard-fighting Hinton Bobcat too stubborn and had to be contented with a tie. Lead by Harris and Dodd, the Cats scored first with a touchdown by Hinerman and Harris added the point. Then on passes by Giannakis and Burger, Mandt scored and Schrader kicked the point tying the score .... Then the mighty Lions flew through a fighting Red Devil from Oak Hill as the points for the Garritymen were pinned up by Schrader and Grubb, with the able help of Lewis and Barnett .... Coach lrish Garrity used his sub teams all afternoon in defeating a down-but-never-out Clendenin team. Schrader and Barnett did the scoring for the Lionmen and then retired to the showers for a well-earned rest .... Then Charleston moved into enemy land and was caught napping by a mediocre Beckley eleven and put on the goose-egg end of the score, Phil Collia provided the only spark in the sluggish Capital team with his outstanding play at tackle. Buster Smith did the honors for the Flying Eagles. . . . After losing to Beckley, Charleston came up against the mighty Redmen of the North, the State Champs from Parkers- burg, and suffered their second defeat of the season. Our boys had little chance against a well-balanced team lead by Captain Paul Meredith and Early in the running positions, and the line. Chug Schrader tallied the lone touchdown for the to an undefeated and untied season .... Now we find the boys of from Wheeling. Although Wheeling defeated us last year, we with Dick Lewis clearing the way for the Lion ball carriers and Walter iAll-Statel Barnes in Lions as the Big Reds roared on CHS playing host to the team had our revenge in good style, Flipping Ferg Giannakis tossing the pill around to Grubb and Barnett for two goals, Schrader followed Lewis for a third one. its best ball of the season to Irish eyes were truly smiling that day .... Charleston played beat a powerful Bulldog team from Dunbar. The Dogs had a great team, but the Capitals were in no mood to see Irish in a bad mood. Lion scores were tallied by Flowers, Schrader, Knopp, and Grubb, Silverstein adding the final point .... Our next game was played at Fairfield Stadium. We shall try to forget that game. Both teams played good ball, Huntington had a smile from Lady Luck and scored, but Charleston fought hard until the end .... One of our hardest-fought games was played when the Mountain Lions traveled to the University town to face an undefeated Morgantown eleven. The many having high hopes of seeing the Morgantown boys finish a very successful season by downing Charleston were stunned when a revengeant team of Mountain Lions beat a fighting Morgantown squad by one field goal. Harry lHeigh-Hoi Silverstein booted a thirty-five yard field goal to give the Lions a slight lead. Then Morgantown fought back and scored a touchdown and a point. With only a few minutes to play, Collia, Giannakis, and Lewis tore a hole in the Morgantown line and Schrader slipped through to score, and the game ended. lt was in this game that Jack Summers, acting as captain, played the greatest game of his three-year career to lead the mighty Lions to victory. Andy DeMao, the all-state guard, was the star for the losers. lt was a pleasure to see the tine sportsmanship of both teams in this hard-fought event. Late in the game with both teams fighting like mad, DeMao was injured and was carried from the field by Charleston players .... Charleston ended its season in a blizzard that filled the field with six inches of snow, losing to a fine East Bank outfit as both teams fought to keep from freezing lwe lost our goal postsll. Although the girls do not compete with other schools as do the boys, intra-mural competition is every bit as keen. The season of '38-9 opened with the tennis tournament. From a series of exciting matches emerged triumphant Alzada Maddox as singles champion, Martha Muldoon and Margaret Zaharis coming through the doubles with flying colors. After tennis came volley-ball, then the archery tournament, which was won by Alma Barnette, Basketball was welcomed with enthusiasm, this sport being a favorite with most of the girls. At the same time a series of ping pong matches got under way, in which Reba Erskine and Jo Wright out-shone all competition. Some sports which were engaged in all through the year were bowling, paddle-tennis, and swimming. To wind up the year's fun, a fast-moving schedule of softball games was played during April. Of course, the culmination of all sports' triumphs was the Award Assembly in May, when those girls who had been outstanding were presented with pins and letters in recognition of their work. - 1w1 ,f M- QQ- . -A, h lnj'-q , xl 5' ' il NAME 5 ' N... This fall we started full swing into the business of being a Senior, We organized the Charlestonian, had our pictures taken, filled in numerous blanks, pored through college catalogues, and fully enjoyed our publicity. A lovely Miss Mountain Lion was elected from our class. As Seniors, we may look back and realize what an enjoyable three years we have spent in CHS. And yet, though graduation has been our goal, we are Ioath to leave the school that has done so much for us. pl 5.0 ST' .i 1 'ul Ill f rl' MASQ, i ' I ill? - ' .QW . .gig RE fa, 3 :IA RY I BENJAMIN NASON BAR KSDALE iiBenii College Preparatory Student Council 3 ROBERT EDWARD AGNEW Class President 4 GEORGE BARRETT JENNINGS BEARE Bob Basketball Manager 3 Industrial Arts Whiskers College Preparatory National Thespians 3, 4 Commercial Sophomore Dramatic Club Curtain and Mask 3 Natronal Honor Society Hi-Y 2, 3 EDITH VIRGINIA AYER5 VIRGINIA LEE BRADLEY KATHLEEN ALICE BRITTON Ginger Commercial Commercial Horne Economics Girl Reserves 4 Sophomore Dramatic Club Hi-G Club 2 Glec Club 2, 3, 4 A Cappella Choir 3, 4 Student Council 3, 4 BEATRICE MAE ADKINS MARTHA ANN BARNSGROVE HELEN MARIE BRENNEMAN HELEN JOSEPHINE BRQ Bee General Music Jo Stenographic Glee Club 3 Glee Club 2, 3, 4 Commercial Girl Reserves 3 A Cappella Choir 3, 4 Glee Club 2, 3 4 Girls' Athletic Club 2, 3 Girls' Athletic Club 2 l-ll-G Club 4 NATHAN PRICE BAKER JAMES LESLIE BARNETT WAYNE ELBERT BATTON College Preparatory Jim General Charlestonian College Preparatory Hi-Y 2 ALVIE PAUL BAILEY WILLIAM QUENTIN BARNETTE JAMES J. The class of l939 is proud of its members in the National Honor Society and other honorary organizations of Charleston High School. ln society away from academic work the class has also been conspicuous in many affairs. Under its supervision as juniors the Junior-Senior Prom and the class play, Spring Dance, rose to unprecedented heights. The senior play was among -its outstanding achievements. Other projects, the Charlestonian, the matinee dances, the various assemblies, the Senior tea, and the class day program, were most praiseworthy. Through the excellent co-operation of the 422 members of the May class all these projects have been financial, as well as social, successes. lt is not with conceit that the class reflects upon past incidents-incidents which are prepara- tory to a greater campaign-for they have given us confidence which in the future will be invaluable. Surely, memories of successful and prosperous days in CHS will remain with us always. A DART ATUQ 'uf Vfl L ff ZEORGEANNA ALDRIDGE PAULINE AUDIA I 419 ROSE FRANCES BALLAM PAUL NATHAN. We aren't little Sophomores, and yet, we're not dignified Seniors, We have had our start in high school and now we plan to follow it up to become the most outstanding class in Cl-IS, Our first big attemot at our goal was our Junior Class play, The Youngest. Our efforts were rewarded, for it was a big success and had the largest crowd for a Junior play in the history of CHS, We don't want to miss anything during our stay here so we are represented in all the clubs and have members in all ot the courses oltered. Since we are used to doing things in a big way, we don'l' neglect our assemblies, The many outstanding students in our class contribute to them and we are not unwilling to take in a little culture now and then. Our climax as an in-between class was in May when we presented the Junior-Senior Prom and it you don't think that was good and measured up to our standard, lust wait until next year! We'll even improve on our reputation- if fhat'5 possible. 98 . Secretary-Treasurerdn,qjfwugd JUNIOR A CLASS O KITTY ESKEW . HARRY MUSSER . FRANCES THOMAS JIMMY HEFFERMAN . . We have started into clubs, adding fresh zest to them, but our class boasts its own special club, the Sophomore Dramatic Club which is our route to the Curtain and Mask Club, the National f rr Thespians, and who knows, maybe the National Honor Society. Our club presents three plays a semester, usually given in our class assemblies. Sometimes we have lectures or talent programs in assembly. We take a course in Guidance once a week to learn more about CHS, The lOA's made their first flight into society November lOth when they had a class party. The lOB's, not to be outdone, had their party December 9th, Although our status may seem very good on paper, we are anxiously awaiting the moment when we can show some little lOB the way to the elevator. What is it? remarks Jean Weller. Why is it that our graduation is such a striking one? says Emily. That's easy, says Jean. The beautiful flowers from Bohnert's add so much. And l have something to say, says Jimmie Fisher. The girls specify Bohnert's for corsages, too. ln fact, interrupts Jean, they are so lovely they 'chip in' for appearance wherever used. Haven't you noticed how smoothly the motor purrs along since I changed to Fleet- Wing? replies Bob Hill. And their lubricating service is tops, too. And another thing, says Martha McClure, as they sped along the road, Did you notice how courteous and prompt the attendants were at the Kanawha Gasoline Station? For expert lubrication, high quality gasoline and oils--there's no better than FLEET-WING. II U 'I' HW Is'I.OWI-IR Co. - l24 Good afternoon, Dr. Shawkeyf' greeted Nana links, the spokesman of a group of future Morris Harvians. Well, Miss links, replied Dr. Shawkey, I am delighted to know you and others in your group are interested in college and that you think favorably of Morris Harvey. You give me the impression that you would make good college students and I can assure you a cordial Welcome when you come to enroll. l arn glad you carne to call on us. Morris Harvey College A group of interested students: Bill Ezell, Anne Mclunkin, Ollie Mae McGuire, Bob Harris, Bob Gibson, Charles LaMaster, and Bette Downs inspect the plant of The Mathews Printing and Lithographing Company at 600 Capitol Street and get first-hand information on the operation of a modern offset lithographic press from the veteran press foreman, William Duve. The press being demonstrated to these inquiring youngsters is one of four lithographic presses used by this progressive con- cern for the production of maps, catalogs, magazines, books, letterheads, advertising literature, etc., in one or more colors. The Mathews Company also operates a complete printing department. The nine presses used in the printing division, combined with the four lithographic presses, have a total capacity of more than one million impressions per week. I see you girls are having them too, said Bob Thomas, Executive Editor of the Book Strap as he came into the Blossom Dairy. Yes, answered Barbara Pierson, this Irradiated Vitamin D milk they use helps me to keep up through the day. It certainly does, agreed Beba Erskine. It it weren't for that I don't know how Iwould get along. Well, I'll grant you that the milkshakes are good, but these sundaes-they're grand, replied Virginia Ayers gayly, and they have delicious sandwiches. I get one every day. You know, said Paul Eitzwater, I think the Blossom Dairy is the loest place in town to go after school. It's quiet, cool and the food and drinks are swell. And say, kids, speaks up Martha McClure, don't forget that this is not the only Blossom Dairy Store. TI'IEBE'S ONE IN YOUB NEIGHBORHOOD. 1...-1--141-I Wasn't that a swell tour through the Conlon plant? re- marked Iohn Grubb as the group waited for a taxi cab. I had no idea that a bakery was so interesting. I agree with you heartily on that, said Ted Treadgold. I have been in many bakeries but this one is 'tops' in every way. It is modern, attractive, and surely efficient judging by the way those tasty cakes and bread were rolling out. Tasty cakes, interrupted Nancy Watts, they're just down- right DELICIOUSI' And if I weren't so modest, added Norma lane Allen, I'd still be eating. Of the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent annually by your gas company for improvements, expansion, taxes, rentals, payrolls, etc., a major portion goes toward educating the youth of the State.
