In the following pages, we attempted to recall some of the activities, both social and academic, of our senior year. To accomplish this, we selected a theme of Hands. For four years, we have been in the hands of our faculty and administration. Now as they place a diploma in our hands, we are ready to undertake the future with the confidence and knowledge they have given us. We have watched the hands of our athletes, as the teams represent our school in interscholastic sports. Here as in all of the school activities and organizations, each member contributes his ability to make the group function better. As editor I would like to thank each member of the Lyre Staff and all those who assisted us for their co-operation in compiling our yearbook. I join all of them in proudly presenting the 1962 Lyre. Sincerely, Edie Hallchurch Editor It is with deep appreciation that we, the class of '62 dedicate our Lyre to a man who has so graciously devoted his time and himself for our school's advancement and achievements in interscholastic athletics. He is a person that we will never forget as a teacher, coach, and friend. Whenever we think of a satisfactory win or a disappointing loss, we will always remember the one who did the most to make that contest possible. We, hereby, dedicate this yearbook to you, Mr. Sennett. IN APPRECIATION To Miss Winchell, who has given much of her time and effort and has aided us insurmountably in the publication of this yearbook, we, the class of 1962, extend our warmest and heartiest Thank- you! We the class of 1962, would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Keenan, our advisor, who has helped us in overcoming failures, insuring successes, and thus reaching our ultimate goals. 5 : i , ir i r f i j - LYRE STAFF FIRST ROW: Janet Russ, Business Manager; Whit Sprague, Senior Activities Co-Editor; Edie Hallchurch, Editor; Gail Johnson, Senior Activities Co-Editor; John Grant, Activities Editor. Twenty-five years ago this June, at the end of my first year of teaching, a man I respected very much gave me a card on which a few lines were printed. I have kept it where I could read it often. The words mean a great deal to me. I give them to you in the hope that you may discover in them, a guide for you in the future. Henry Van Dyke wrote them. Four things a man must learn to do If he would keep his record true; To think without confusion clearly; To love his fellow-men sincerely; To act from honest motives purely. To trust in God and Heaven securely. Donald S. Ray TO the CLASS of 1962 CONGRATULATIONS! In the future as in the past you will be presented and confronted with certain choices and decisions. When the time arrives for you to decide; it is my sincere hope that you will call upon your faculties, convictions, and divine guidance in arriving at a solution. If you do this, then you have arrived and your contribution to society will be great. Donald W. Coates E du colt on BOARD OF EDUCATION Clifford Crego — President Roy Misner William Crego E. Winston Baker Russell Lucy Cecil Reeves Grant Furbush Robert Bitz TO THE CLASS OF 1962, GREETINGS! In this age of automation, of nuclear power, of space travel, one s need to possess academic knowledge is unquestioned. As one examines the simplest modern mechanical device he marvels at its many intricate and interdependent parts which cause it to function properly. However, as one studies the past, examines the present, and contemplates the future he must realize that, regardless of the fan- tastic nature of any of his creations, he has never been able to, nor can he ever plan to, create any device to replace the human mind. It behooves each one of us, then, in his professional, community and family life to train himself to observe clearly, to weigh carefully and to judge accurately the critical issues constantly confronting him. Thus, with guidance from the Great Architect of the universe, man s creations may be directed into paths which lead to betterment of human environment and understanding. Good luck to each of you as you face the challenging future. Theodore Durgee srzsic : suFrxrr. Projectionist Club 3 yrs. 47 As the sun slowly disappeared over the mountain across the fiord, the lyngstod family sat down to their evening meal. It was eleven o'clock, and in the little Norwegian town of Kjerknesvagen others were also having a bite to eat before retiring on this cool evening in late June. The meal consisted chiefly of open-faced sandwiches. On top of each slice of hard bread we spreod a thin layer of butter and then either honey, gooseberry jam, or any of a number of cheeses, including Norway's own delicious gjetost (goat cheese). As we munched on the sandwiches, the conversation shifted to politics, for father was running for the Storting (Nor- wegian parliament) in the fall. On other nights such as this the topic varied from the upcoming wedding of brother Edw to the stand Norway should take if Great Britain and Denmark were to enter the European Common Market. But we could not talk all night; there was work to be done in the morning. We must finish hoeing the twen- ty acres of potatoes and delivering six-week old chickens if we wanted to attend the exposition at Namsos the following day. The other farmers around had hay to rake, while most of the townspeople worked at the lumber mill, Kjerknesvagen's only major business. As I thought back on the days' adventures, I remembered most my first solo trip into town to get the mail and stop at the general store for a couple of items. Without my brother Vermund (17) along, I was forced to converse entirely in Norwegian. The wonderful friendliness with which I was helped to do my errands was enough to instill in me a never ending love of the Norwegian people. Before going to sleep that night, Vermund came into my room and turned in Radio Luxembourg, the favorite radio station of the Norwegian teenagers. As the latest American Hit came over the air, Vermund expressed a desire to come to America some day. I was hardly joking when I offered him my passage back from Norway. During my visit to Germany, I was extremely impressed with the close family ties that exist there. The German family is a closely knit unit which remains so until the children are well into their twenties. The chil- dren do not have as much independence as American children, nor do they participate in as many activities as we. Instead of meeting friends in the afternoon or going to the movies with them on Friday or Saturday evenings, the German teen-agers remain at home with their families during which time they usually discuss schoolwork, do housework, help with the household chores, play cards, listen to the radio, take walks, or participate in some other activity that would bring the family closer together. In addition to family customs, the German school system also differs considerably from our school system. I found that under their system, the German students study a wider variety of subjects than the American students. If a German student who has finished his thirteen years of schooling were compared to a graduated American student, one would notice that the German student is more versed in foreign languages and sciences. His knowledge of other subjects, however, would appear to be more comparable to that of the American student. All German students are compelled to study from twelve to fourteen subjects a year, and must pass every- one of them before he is permitted to enter the next grade. Striving to pass all these subjects, the German students must do a great deal of studying and hard work. They have little time for extra curricular activities which are so important in America. The German students take their education more seriously, because they real- ize the value of it and know that it can not be attained easily. We in New Zealand pride ourselves with a high standard of living; consequently our home life, amenities and activities are similar to those of Americans. However, there are differences, which vary from the age one is allowed to drive a car, to the price of milk shakes. The family life is similar. The whole group goes on vacation, and occasionally goes to a movie or theatre together. During school all the children have their chores to do, washing dishes or cleaning the car, and for these duties we get paid our allowance which is about 50 cents a week. On Friday or Saturday evenings we go out on dates or with friends to dances, parties, or to the movies. A type of activity that is becoming extremely popular in New Zealand is the Youth Club, where all teenagers can get together to play indoor games, dance, or just talk over a soft drink. Little things do vary though. New Zealanders can drive a car at the age of fifteen, but usually there is only one car to a family. Television is new to New Zealand and is looked upon as a novelty. The prices of articles are different. Milkshakes are only 12 to 15 cents, while a second-hand car in New Zealand costs more than a brand new one here. But whatever the differences I mention they are only superficial. The high school pupils of both countries like the so-called modern music; they both dance the twist ; and they don't like being called irresponsible by the grownups , who were told the same things when they were young. On the whole, the New Zealand student, if not the same, is similar to his American counterpart in most ways.
