Text from Pages 1 - 116 of the 1958 volume:

foRewoR6 Dear Reader: Here is your book. Long hours have been made trying to make it a memorial that you will treasure all your life. We have tried to depict the growth and progress of our school through these pages. Our success in doing this depends on how you, as a student, accept our efforts. We feel we have reached a milestone in the presentation of our theme. In medieval time, a castle with its manor was a composite picture of activity; each part self-reliant, self governed, and complete. In many ways, Baldwinsville High School is like this castle. Teachers, Student Council, clubs and class organizations make up the Baldwinsville Manor, the estate of the Senior Class. In the 1$D8 LYRE, we have attempted to present a pictorial record of life in the manor, thus recalling happy memories of our high school years. We hope you enjoy the LYRE. It was ours for almost a year. Now it belongs to you. Sincerely, The Editor Ed Klein tABle of contents Lyre Staff ________________________________________________ 1 Theme _____________________________________________________ 2 Foreword __________________________________________________ 4 Dedication ________________________________________________ 6 Administration ____________________________________________ 7 Teachers __________________________________________________11 Teacher Informal __________________________________________15 Cafeteria - Bus Drivers - Office Staff - Custodians ______ 16 Teacher Profile __________________________________________ 18 Seniors ___________________________________________________19 Informal Seniors __________________________________________42 Prophecy __________________________________________________46 Senior Profile ____________________________________________48 Senior Officers - Senior Honor Group ______________________51 Informals____•_____________________________________________52 Underclassmen ___________________________________________ 53 Informals _________________________________________________60 Activities ------------------------------------------------61 Sports: ___________________________________________________73 Girls' Sports __________________________________________74 Cheerleaders ___________________________________________78 Boys’ Sports____________________________________________81 Lyre Staff_________________________________________________98 Advertisements ____________________________________________99 5 We, the Class of ’58, with sincere appreciation for your most valuable assist- ance, gratefully dedicate . . . But how can we apply this conventional type of dedica- tion to a man who is anything but conventional; a man to whom each of us has felt we could go, confident of finding interest and advice. As you taught us not to sacrifice our principles for the sake of conformity, we offer this deviation from the normal token of recognition as proof of our faith in your doctrine, Jack Malian, PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Class 1958 Lyre To the Claio g ongratulations TodaA X n er before, we are concerned about the strength of our country. HAMMOND PERSONALITY the toys of yope It is the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and fifty-five and suddenly we’re pages in the court of Queen Vickery. We chose as spokesmen for our cause: Joe Guyder, Jane Pillans, Marie Van Ness, and Joanie Quackenbush. Under their expert leadership we w'ere able to fulfill several successful deeds; such as, a bake sale and the sale of school beanies. Our declared masters of oratory were Dick Hendrickson and Dawn Lewien. As we progress along the road to royal acclaim, 1956 finds us in the service of King Malian. Encouraged in our endeavors by our worthy peers: Kenny Tucker, LeRoy Frank, Jean Perrin, and Carol Nentwick, we achieved greater heights with the presentation of our Variety Show which was an outstanding success. Helping to build our treasury was the sale of mega- phones and red and white plumage. Each year finds us one step higher on the social pyramid, and 1957 is no different from the rest. Inaugurating the new year as Dukes and Duchesses, we presented a gala ball held in the Enchanted Forest. With Jim Blanchard, Sheila Montague, Bonnie Ham, and LeRoy Frank encouraging us on our last surge for recognition, a profitable sale of class pins was staged. Hailed as alchemist of our court for his award-winning scientific achievement was Brian Rhodehamel and selected keeper of the Elmira Key was Jayne Maniccia. Envoys representing the court of King Malian abroad were Kathy Stevens and Ken Tucker. Our goal reached at last, we, as Knights and Ladies, hope this year will hold for us as many pleasures as the preceding years. We shall never cease to encourgae others along their roads to royal acclaim. AI.T.F.R, NATHAN SHAUL Nate Classical Club 3, Track 2, Wrestling, Youth Council, Tennis. ANGUISH, KENNETH C. Louis pRophecy In the ten years since we were graduated, Baldwinsville has progressed so that it hardly re- sembled the village we had known. Glancing at the Who’s Who in Baldwinsville. we found that most of our former classmates had returned to the home town. After we arrived in Syracuse on a Manseau Line bus driven by Floyd VanWie. we hired a car from Styer's Rent-A-Wreck Service driven by Dick Perrin and headed toward Baldwinsville. About a half mile out of the city, the car broke down. We pulled in to Johnston's Service Station for repairs. Ray Peterson, head mechanic, quickly straightened out the difficulties. On our way again, we passed Pantaleo's Truck Farm and a few' moments later saw Hendrickson's Vitamin Rich Fruit Juice truck pulling into the 4H Headquarters, now' headed by Eleanor Everingham. Just on the outskirts of town, our attention was draw'n to the new Baldwinsville Health Club, now famous coast to coast. Our chauffeur told us that many of our old crowd could be found here, so we pulled in. We were met at the door by Ginger Bostwick, head of the Reducing Division of the club. Con- ducting us through, she pointed out such old ac- quaintances as the dietician-advisors to the reducing division, Jayne Maniccia and Kathy Stevens. We saw Jessie Farnholtz, still trying to reduce her nick- name (ahem), and Kristen (the Amazon) VanKeuren just reducing. While visiting in the Athletic Di- vision, we saw Sheila Montague, head of the wo- men’s section, and her able staff consisting of Joan Newcomb and Janet Richardson. In the men’s section, we saw Dave Perrigo and his assistant, Fred House. Ginger was especially eager to show us the Medical Center, and although the clinic had not been finished yet, we saw Optometrist Jack Vickery and his secretary Nancy Stickney. Bidding Ginger and the rest of the gang adieu, w e asked to be re- membered to the club’s other secretaries, Judy Con- nor, Joyce Cooper, and Marilyn Quartz, who were at a Stenographers' Convention. On our way back to the car we saw Ernie Neu- pert, closely followed by Charlie McGee running toward town on their morning workout. Upon entering traffic we saw huge campaign posters and banners proclaiming the need for Ken Tucker and LeRoy Frank as Co-Mayors of our fair village. Dick said that he had seen Marsha Steven- son and Janet Reeves the week before, and they had told him that they were now working as co-private secretaries to our illustrious politicians. Nearing town, we were caught in a traffic jam where we saw Policeman Al Ranger trying to direct traffic past the Sanatorium. Al told us that Marcia Klekosky and Sally Gregory were nurses now and both worked in the San. Making the congestion even worse was Mike Haney, who evidently had taken Mrs. Gristwood's advice, for he was driving a garbage truck. Unable to make much progress in the traffic jam, we pulled into Hunter’s Haven. Upon enter- ing, we were greeted by waitress Ann Mahoney who showed us to a table and we were waited on by another waitress, Pat Carroll. Ann- came back for a few minutes, and while we were chatting, she told us that Linda Smith was the cook assisted by Jerry and Eugene Allen. As we were waiting we noticed John Gilbert, Lloyd Barbur, and Don DeVaul, on leave from the Navy, at the next table. Cashier Carol Reynolds came over and informed us of the activities of a few of our classmates. She told us of Janet Weigand’s success in the Olympics, of Koral Klekosky's hits in the recording field, and of Sally Ward's new position as head of the Language De- partment at Columbia University. After lunch we toured the Shopping Center, now one of the largest in the East. Rivals, Don Stevenson's A and P and Pendergast's Supermarket were filled with patrons among whom we saw' Penny Brown, shopping for her family along with Delores Yager. Adjoining their buildings were Phyllis Hughes’ Beauty Shop and Trabert and Mc- Kinley’s Barber Shop. Next was the new branch of McCrory's, managed by Sandy Greene, with salesgirls Yvonne Young and Margaret William, and floor- walker Francis Russett. Further down was Kelly's Jewelry Store with special music department run by Jane PiLlans. In the center of the Shopping Center w'as the Academy of Dance, boasting Don Mousy Rogers and Harlow Kisselstein as teachers of Ballroom Dancing and Barbara Kunst teaching Modern Dance. This was adjoined by the Quackenbush School of Arc with head designers Kelly Saunders, Bob Winters, and Dorothy Williams. We then saw the Bureau of Home Economics run by Joyce Loveless, Helen Bresee, and Viva Letterman. The last store we came to was Linda Tyner’s Book Store. Linda told us Vicki Matisz was an interpreter at the U.N. and that 46 Mary Crego was head of the Library of Congress. She showed us with pride Bruce Porter's Trig Can Be Fun? Brian Rhodehamel’s 1'be Professor Speaks, and Gary Virkler's Condensed Science Fiction. Returning to our car which was parked near the Spring's and Doran's Pool Room, we were al- most run down by a Van Ness School of Driver Education car driven by Ginny Lostumbo. We decided, as was always the custom, to stop off at the dairy, where we found Pat Wysocki, Rita Corders, and Vera Johnson. They talked us into at- tending the Championship Stock Car Race, which features such drivers as Ken Anguish, Bob Billings, John Delaney, and Bill Kimber. On our way to the track we passed Principal Jim Durgee on his way home from rhe Halls of Ivy. On the outskirts of town was E. Blaisdell’s Riding Academy and Paula Wheeler’s Drive-in Movie where John Mezzo was starring in Little Tarzan. At the track were Fire Chief, Louis Yager, and Undertaker. Larry Anderson (just in case) in his ambulance. Due to a sudden storm, the race was cancelled, but ducking into a news stand managed by Wayne Cornish, we found shelter. We picked up a copy of the Daily News which was on sale, and found an enormous headline reading, Pat Rogers' Transatlantic Voyage On a Raft (we knew she’d get there someday, somehow). A look at the sports page told us of Joe Guyder's continued success in sports, and on the woman’s page wc found a column entitled Lyon’s Advice to the Lovelorn. After the shower had stopped, we noticed that we were hungry again, and glancing at our watches we discovered that it was after six o’clock. On our way out to the race track we had passed a large night club and decided to go there for dinner. When we were well established in the club and were waiting to be served, we glanced about at some of the other patrons. Over in the corner booth we saw Joe Reinschmidtf recently named one of the ten best dressed in the country.) While chatting with Joe, we learned that Chuck Hubbard, who had gone out West to seek his fortune, was hitchhiking back to visit his home town, and that Myrna I.amson was singing with a big choral group now touring the country. At a nearby table we saw Marcia Sprague, famous fashion model, and Allen Emm, the Rookie of the Year. Just then a flash drew our attention to Tim Wallace, the club photo- grapher. While we ate we were entertained by the country's number one dance band, consisting of George Lovey Loveless, Bernie and Dick Schader, Martin McVicker and last but not least, Ed Klein. Singing with the band was torchy Jackie Hamm, and ped- dling cigarettes from table to table were Pat Mc- Govern and Bev Mills. Hearing a shout from the bar, we headed in that direction and seated at the bar we saw, bartender, Tony Cobourn, Nate Aller, the international playboy, and Bob Lucky Lind- holm, now head cigarette tester for the American Tobacco Company, who was visiting from Brooklyn. Bob told us that Seppo Espo, also returning to Bald- winsville for a visit, would arrive in New York City on the U.SS. Marlboro. We thought we recognized a familiar face on the television set above the bar and a second look confirmed our suspicions. There, on the What’s My Line?” program was Tim Carter as moderator, and his mystery guest was none other than Bucky Winters, the All-American star. We became so engrossed in conversation with our old friends that first thing we knew everyone had gone home and the scrubwoman (who else but Linda Cowlin?) was preparing to mop the floor. After talking for a few minutes with Linda, we left the club. What kind of a day was it? It was a day like all days, but WE WERE THERE. 47 MOST VERSATILE Jane: Richardson Ed Klein MOST STUDIOUS Janet Reeves Brian Rnodehamel PRETTIEST Joan Quackenbush LeRoy Frank Ken Tucker WITTIEST Jackie Hamm DONE MOST FOR THE SCHOOL Kathy Stevens Ken Tucker PERSONALITY Sheila Montague Jim Blanchard 5 7 . senioR class OfflCCRS President ________________________ Jayne Maniccia Vice-President ----------Sheila Montague Treasurer------ -------- James Blanchard Secretary------------------------Joan Quackenbush senioR honoR qroup QUV S3 |nQ squiRes and Ladies-in waiting •ifhkwiiiisW : ii '; quv sabivd SU3QIVU1 :p;:s Kenneth Tucker - LeRoy Frank Dianne Tucker President______ Vice-President Secretary T re usurer Jayne Maniccia Bonnie Hamm WkmMim ki .f- . ■ I ul I President Brian Rhodehamel Secretary-Treasurer- Bonnic Ham honoR society Jackie Rogers Jessie Farnholtz Secretary Treasurer - President______ Vice-President Sheila Montague Joan Newcomb President_______________________________Carol Lamson Secretary Vice-President___________________ - Nancy Pfohl Treasurer Red CROSS dRAimtics President-------Tony Cobourn Treasurer_ Secretary - _ Marcia Spraeue Joan Burkehart Carol Brotherton Jessie Farnholtz President___ _ Vice-President - - T.e Roy Frank Secretary_______________________________________Danny Stevens Tim Carter Treasurer----------------------------------------Tony Cobourn key cLub student dRiveRS’ association President_____ Vice-President _Pat Wysocki Secretary_____________________________ Bonnie Palmer _Sue Trexler Treasurer________________________________________Jerry Powers f.ha. The team started the season off by losing a couple of games by one or two points. After this they began to settle down and play outstanding ball. Because of this, the Varsity team finished second in the county. West Genesee, who beat them twice, was the first place team. B'ville lost one game to North Syracuse and lost one game to unbeaten Genesee by only one point in an overtime. Norm Salisbury of B’ville was the highest scorer in the county. He led the scoring for B’ville and for the rest of the county. Salisbury is a senior this year. Two other seniors who looked good were Winters and Guyder. The team under instruction of Coach Vogel, who has been coach for two years, finished second in the County League. West Genesee was the only team that beat them in this league.
