Text from Pages 1 - 108 of the 1957 volume:

Dear Reader: In publishing this 1957 LYRE, we have endeavored to keep up the fine traditions established in past yearbooks, and to in- troduce some new features, which, we hope, everyone from under- classmen to alumni will appreciate and enjoy. Each year improvements are made in the publication of the LYRE. We, of this year’s staff, feel that we have reached a new- level with the theme of learning and the formal method of presentation. You will notice as you look through the book that we have used book titles as headings for each section. The past four years have gone by very swiftly. Wre will al- ways look back on those years as a happy time in our lives. Nowr each will go on his own way; close friendships will fade to make room for new ones. Here is the year 1956-57 in panorama—everyone is repre- sented—everything is here. Though we’ve made mistakes, we hope you will get as much enjoyment from this book as we have had in preparing it. ' I To the Class of 1957, Greetings! We heartily congratulate each of you on the attainment of this, the first im- portant goal of your life. In order to reach this goal, you haveB had to depend upon three main sources I for your guidance and help. From the I community you have received all of these P ' i _ material helps so necessary for modern education. From your parents and teach- ers you have received guidance and train- ing in moral and educational values. From yourself you-have received mental and physical strength with which to ac- complish your aim. As you look forward to the attainment of your next goal, you must plan to re- turn to these sources some of the help you have received from them. To your community, you must be willing to ren- der the most capable services your talents permit. By your achievements you must return to your parents and teachers the confidence which they have placed in you. Finally, each completed task must rep'- resent your best effort in order to prove to yourself your worth to society. May the Great Teacher be with you and guide you as you face your next great challenge. THEODORE R. DURGEE High School Principal MR. EVANS MR. RAY MR. After a very exciting election, our first class officers were Guy Perdiue as President and Roily Germain, Vice President. Ann Reeder was elected as secretary and Clayton Nenlwick as treasurer. Mrs. Mangano undertook the job of class advisor. Our money-making projects included a paper drive and bake sales. Claus Uhl entered our class from Germany at the end of the year. Carol Yeandle and Suzanne Ed- monds received the Latin I cup. First prize in Junior Prize Speaking was captured by Sandra Huebenthal and Neil Beebe, while Karen Martin and Steve Tigner were in a close second place. 1954— Sophomores and one year nearer our goal! Our officers were: president, Roily Germain; vice president, George DeLoff; secretary, Sibyl Fitzgerald; and treasurer, Claus Uhl. Mrs. Goodfellow was the class advisor. Our main project was selling white sweat shirts which was a big success. We also had a one-act play with the Juniors and Seniors. Suzanne Edmonds, Carol Yeandle. and Steve Tigner had their names added to the Latin II cup. Steve Tigner also received the Kiwanis Scholarship Prize for having the highest average in high school. 1955— Juniors and high school was half over. Our officers for the year were: Doug Hotchkiss, president; Linda Crook, vice president; Roily Germain, secretary; Guy Perdiue, treasurer. Mrs. Goodfellow again braved the year as the class advisor. With everyone’s help and co-operation, the Christmas Ball was a huge success. We also held several dances throughout the year. Suzanne Edmonds again received the Latin III cup. In the fall we were thrilled in receiving the Class rings we had ordered the previous year. Linda Crook, Dorothy Kelly, and Guy Perdiue and Neil Beebe were selected as delegates to the Citizenship Conference held at Syracuse University. Gary Coleman took the honors in physics for the science award. The Elmira Award to a Junior girl went to Dorothy Kelly. Pat Ford was awarded the first sportsmanship award. Many students applied for the American Field Service. After much consideration, Sandra Huebenthal was chosen to represent the school in Denmark. In the spring, the LYRE Staff was elected. 1956— Seniors, a never-to-be-forgotten year. W'e elected our officers with Robert Foster as president. The other positions of vice president, secretary, and treasurer, were held by Claus Uhl, Suzanne Edmonds, and Sibyl Fitzgerald, respectively. Miss Winchell was the Class Advisor. We were all pleased to have Ana Maria Tapia of Spain as the exchange student this year. We started the year by selling magazine subscriptions, wrapping paper, refreshments at football games and candy. We still have the Variety Show with the Juniors and Sophomores and the Senior Ball for which to work and plan. Then Graduation Day in June, will mark the climax of our high school years. But even though we will all go in different ways, we will always remember the good times we have had at Baldwinsville High School. BASEBALL 1956 Our 1956 varsity baseball team, although sporting a mediocre record, maintained the fine tradition of Baldwinsville ability and spirit. The team was a talented one, and while not rated a serious pre-season threat in the county league race, pro ed its determination by defeating top-ranked North Syracuse twice. The squad was helped tremendously by the presence of veterans Charles Miller, Earl Howard, and Jack Markell and by newcomers Allen Emm and Philip Winters. Miller led in pitching and many batting departments, while Allen Emm, who hurled a no-hitter, tied Jerry Kozma for the highest batting average. TRACK 1956 - COUNTY CHAMPIONS By winning their last league meet of 1956, the fine Baldwinsville track team continued their complete mastery over the county by making it their thirty-second consecutive team triumph. We also continued to show very well in the various relay meets. Such men as Carl Ford, Joe Guyder, Bob Young, and Phil Winters in the sprint relays and Dick Crook, Ernest Neupert, Vic Johnson, and Roily Ger- main in the distance tests helped B’ville pile up points in impressive performance after performance. Bill Young, Len Houck, Howard Jones, Dick Van Buskirk and others helped win many of the county meets by their outstanding accomplishments in the broad jump, high jump, pole vault, and shot put events. To add to the lustre of their excellent record, three new school records were established. They were: Name Event Time or Distance H. Jones D. Van Buskirk W. FOOTBALL 1956-57 Although the 1956 varsity football season at Baldwinsville proved fruitless in the won and lost column and statistics wise, Coach Phil Kennell, in his first year here, strongly believes that his young team will jell next season. He states that our fine showing in the Liverpool and Solvay games went a long way to eliminate the apathy and lack of competitive spirit that had a marked effect on our early season losses. Before the schedule reached the half-way point, the squad was shaved to 19 players as eight were dropped because of breaking training rules and poor attitude. ecause of this the team lost most of its pre-season promise. But as the team finally .got together with the right combination they showed that they could play football. After a narrow 6-0 loss to Liverpool, B’ville lost a spirited, well-played game to solvay, co-champion of the circuit, by a slim 18-0. With many of the boys who ended the 1956 season with the varsity returning and many good J.V. players coming up, our 1957 chances look considerably brighter. CROSS-COUNTRY 1957 - STATE CHAMPIONS Coach Otis Sennett added to his enviable record as our cross country coach by helping the B’ville harriers to another successful season. This year the varsity boys were not only undefeated in class “B,” but won the state meet for the second straight year. Led most of the year by Ernie Neupert. Dick Crook, Vic Johnson, and Roily Germain, the team scored a number of impressive victories in dual meets and the various invitationals. VARSITY First row: Kick, Hotchkiss, W. Kick Germain. Carroll. VARSITY SOCCER 1956-57 Guided by Bruce Dick in his initial year as coach, the 1956 B’ville varsity soccer team finished a successful season in second place in the county league. Coach Dick reports that the team showed great improvement over the course of a rough schedule. Mr. Dick said special acclaim should be given to outstanding players Dick Lettau, Phil Winters, and Dick Sugar and indicated that he is looking forward to a fine season next year because of men like Winters and Norm Salisbury, “by far the best goalie in the league.” High points of the season included two shutout victories over arch rival Solvay and a victory over highly regarded West Genesee. With four veterans returning and the addition of six of last year’s J.V. team, the team ran into hard luck at the start of the campaign. After a non-league win, we lost our next three games, by one, three, and two points; the latter two were the first league encounters against Marcellus, AB titleholder and North Syracuse, county champions. After these tough losses the team seldom looked the same. On a few nights, however, the squad showed flashes of brilliance that, if they had been consistent, could have made a different story of the season. For instance, the Bee s beat Solvay twice for the first time in five years and then swamped Liverpool and Jamesville-Dewitt in record scoring performances. Prospects for next year’s team look good with three varsity men returning and many coming up from a good J.V. team. SWIMMING TEAM 78 Led by co-captains Steve Sloat and Jim Hebblethwaite, the swimming team began the season in fine style by walloping Binghamton North. After Christmas, although they did well despite the losses of individuals, they lacked enough depth to win many meets. The team was further hindered by the loss of veteran Carl Nentwick who suffered an appendectomy, but w'ho, after his operation, helped in the New Hartford meet and the sectionals. Jack Mowins lowered his own school and pool record in the 100 yard breast- stroke, and Clayton Nentwick narrowly missed tying the record for the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events by four tenths of a second. Fred Klein also showed great form. Because of the graduation of five members of this year’s team, next year’s outlook is dimmed. But, Coach Dick indicates that he has many fine prospects held over such as: Bob Warner, Bill Orcutt, Mike Fitzpatrick, Tim Caroll, Dave Bell, the Rhodenhamel brothers, and Terry Lynch.
