We think that wherever they are, be it on hot deserts, stormy seas, tropi- cal islands, or in training, they sometimes think of their high school days when they think of home. lt is with the greatest of pleasure that we honor our courageous boys with this small book. Yet out of school's life into Iife's school we go pausing only for a moment at the turning of life's record, that moment filled with joy and sorrow. anticipation and regret, a pause at the threshold of a new portion of life to look backward with mingled feelings on our past four years. Thus we feel as if we were rising slightly above the common plane of humanity, standing upon an eminence a class above all others. But it is almost im- possible to record all the noble deeds and achievements of this distinguished body. We were a verdant bunch during those first few days of high school life but blissfully unconscious of that fact until later events and still later meditation made this clear to our unsophisticated minds. Nevertheless, soon overcoming this characteristic, we blossomed out thus establishing a custom that since has been preserved-that of organizing the freshman class. lt had never been done before but because of this act we leave another of our mementos to the school. Jack Klasmier was our first presi- dent. Perhaps one of the most important events during the first year was Junior Prize Speaking which was won by Jack Klasmier and Florence Cox. Though comparatively inactive socially, we did manage to have several dances through Mr. Guerrera's help and guidance-namely the Sadie Haw- kin's Dance and St. Patrick's Day Dance. Our sophomore year slipped by quickly but yet we found time to organ- ize and again selected Mr. Klasmier as our head. Before we realized it we were leaving good old lO6 and parting-half of the noble body to lO4 and L Barbara Drake Leslie Rury .......Janice Fulmer Co-Editor ....... Co-Editor .......... Richard Hill HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF I943 the remaining portion tolO3,However, we carried on the tradition by being represented in the Legion Oratorical Contest which was won by Barbara Drake and the newly-named Jessie W. Jones Prize Speaking Contest which was won by Florence Cox. As a class we took full responsibility of decorating the gym for commencement dancing as previous junior classes had done. Although our treasury was empty we planned the Victory Hop, which supplied us with more than ample funds for the decoration. lt might be noted that we were represented by several that year on the championship J-V Basketball team that added one more trophy to our school's large Collection. Now we are seniors and fully aware of the fact, for looking back we feel that we have not only been looked up to by the younger students in school but also have known the responsibility of making this an eventful and complete last year. I am sure that not one of us will forget that event- ful basketball game when trying to substitute the selling of chocolate milk for the much-wanted and yet unobtainable candy we found ourselves faced with the cleaning of a gym full of broken milk bottles, or the Christmas Ball, which we all helped to make worthwhile. No class has been more fortu- nate in any way than we in having Vincent Bassett as our president for both terms. He has been awonderful leader and help to every committee. Florence Cox received the American Legion Good Citizenship Pilgrimage Award. Instead of having a Turkey Trot or a Barnyard Brawl we had the Harvest Hop and Hill-Billy Shindig, which were both wonderful successes. Now that basketball is over we are looking forward to our Senior Play, What A Life, which cannot help but be another success, and also to the Senior Ball, Class Night and Commencement. The time has seemed so short yet we have a store of unforgetable memories to carry with us as we go out from the harbor into the sea of life to overcome the high and dashing waves and gain our glory which lies beyond ,f f.!' , Mui. Seriously, though, these Thursday afternoon tilts were a great attraction and deserve praise for their promotion of basketball as a competitive sport while training our future stars. Take it easy, Navin. Come on, pass it. Fall back, you dummies. These are scraps of what a passer-by will hear issuing forth from the gym on Friday nights. It is Girls' lntrtamural Basketball in full swing. Under the supervision of Mr. Guerrera and Miss Nelson, the girls have slowly but steadily improved .in their passing, dribbling and aim to become good players. The teams were captained as follows: the White Shirts by Meta Brammer and Ann Zahn, the Green Backs by Helen Henderson and Frederica Mon- tague, the Blue Birds by Janice Fulmer and Joan Folletg and the Red Wings by Marcia Gates and Carolyn Navin. Each and every girl realizes that she has developed better sportsmanship and a stronger body for having participated in her beloved sport of basketball. Ump Victory leaves his barnyard basketball team to Jack Gillespie. Mae King and Harold Tucker leave arguing with anyone who'll argue with them. Paul O'Brien bequeaths his car without gas or tires to the scrap drive. What a lot of junk! CLASS PROPHESY While on an inspection tour of hotels. we were quite surprised to find that Harold Tucker was the manager of Syracuse Hotel. He told us that a new supermobile had just been invented by George Coniber, Paul Hunt- ington who had been a dollar-a-year-man during the war, is one of the few who knows the intricacies of it and can drive it. James Reeves, after discovering a substitute for gasoline during the war, is at present teaching in the University and is a mathematical genius if there ever was one. Paul Chapman and Hillis Hay have combined their businesses to form one of the greatest chain of grocery and meat stores in the country. Randall Phillips is still starring as Henry Aldrich in What A Life. Arlene Whor- rall is a model in the Bassett Art Company with Vincent Bassett as presi- dent, of course. lncidentally, remember how you used to see Virginia Holland in the office all the time when we were in high school? Well, if you ever have occasion to seek Virginia, you'll find her in the office of Bassett Art Company. As we continued with our tour, we found that Paul Vander Veer was a bell-boy. We stopped to talk with him a while and learned more about the members of the Class of l943 of Baldwinsville Academy. He said that Ruth Crandon had helped with the reorganization of the 4-H Clubs of the countrv during the war to help in the war effort. She is now Onondaga County Club Agent. There is at least one article in the Gazette, ownership of which was taken over by Leslie Rury in l945. This paper now has over a hundred reporters all over the world. Gene Waldron is the Washington correspondent and is doing very well. We meet Paul O'Brien, who is another bell-boy there and who added even more information about our classmates. Starting with the senior magazine subscription sale, Richard Hill and Joyce De Lorme established the Hill and De Lorme Publishing Company. Audrey Flatt and Barbara Meaker also have established a pencil industry in Baldwinsville. They are doing as well now as they did in the senior pencil sale. Sue Di Toro, after making her debut n society as a Rockette., has settled dawn to the position of private secretary to the mayor, Alfred John- son. Florence Cox is the receptionist in Mayor Johnson's office. Janet Barton is a designer for a fashion magazine which is edited by Thelma Foster and Edith Tuthill. Georgianna Patchett sets the styles for it as a typical career girl. She writes a column which she calls lt's in the Air. This contains the news which her club of gossipers helps her to gather. During the war Barbra Drake was Janice Fulmer's model for posters which were to encourage young women to train as nurses for the Navy. Today we find that Barbara is an assistant to Dr. George O'Brien. Helen Kramer and Estel Kalar have gone on in their quiet way and the last that was heard from them they were conferring with Dr. Bruce Pederson concerning the Good Housekeeping tested recipes. Carolyn King is teaching at the University. She is the head of the English department. Her students do not have much time to do anything because she is lecturing most of the time Frederica Montague took over Miss Forrest's job as Physical Ed. teacher in Baldwinsville Academy. Those girls there are getting a good work-out. lt certainly won't be her fault if they aren't physically fit. Mar- tha Gallagher also writes a column. Her's is called The Poet's Corner, which gives helpful hints to vampires in poetry form. Most of her material comes from her own experiences in her senior year of high school. Bob Gates continued his ambition and is now an undertaker. After we gained the victory of the war, we didn't hear the name of Raymond Victory quite so much. When we did we found it combined with the name, Mildred Rhode to form a pop-corn company. They first got their idea from their experience with the senior pop-corn sales at the basketball games. Burril Wells, who came back to our senior class, also came back from the war to distribute Robert Ten Eyck's book, Art and Model Airplanes. Burrill is now planning a trip around the world in an airship designed by George Powell, who is to accompany him. This trip is to be financed by Jack Klasmier, governor of New York State. ln his campaign speeches Governor Klasmier stressed sports for study young men and used as models Chester Warner and Robert Allen, who made a striking appearance in the school. We've lost track of Andrew Henderson but we think by this time he is president of the Syracuse and Oswego Bus Lines, Inc. He spent most of his time waiting for buses and now he's probably making them wait for him. Eddie Gollands is now Secretary of the Treasury and is still trying to balance the books after the war. Ed always seemed to have trouble balancing books in school, too. We wonder if it was the books or Ed. Alberta Hudson also is in the President's Cabinet. She is the Secretary of Labor. She is giving the labor movement a thorough going-over just like she did in history class. Zora Meloling took over the job of secretary of Baldwinsville Academy in l946, and is still going strong, while her friend in school, Marjorie Ward, is head of the commercial department. When the Class of i943 graduated, little did they realize to what heights of renown that the various members of the class would attain. The results of the visit to this hotel as related by Ruth L. Aplin, R,N, and Arlene Boysman, secretary, has certainly shown that miracles can happen.
