Mr. Bates was the fortunate winner of a proposi- tion offered by that firm. It seems that Mr. Bates sold more cider than any of the other employees and secured the job. He was the tenth husband of Miss Louise Brown of Charles Town. On hearing the news, Countess Nutt said vexedly, Oh, dear, and black isn't a bit in style this year. .1..0.?... GENERAL GRANTHAM - DISMISSED The President today announced the removal of Gen. James A. Grantham from the head of the United States Army for undisclosed reasons. But it is said by those close to the White House that the dismissal was because of the General's failure to attend to his work.
