RHODE Rhodes, a city of minarets, mosques, castles, churches, and bazaars, proved to be an intriguing mixture of cultures. Here the classic ruins of the ancient Greek city-states alternated with the Byzantine, the medi- aeval, and the Turkish buildings in an imposing array. The greatest' architectural influence upon the city was left by the Knights of St. John who had left exten- sive fortifications. From our anchorage in the bay the view of the grim walls easily led our imaginations to wander and we thought how the city must have looked quite similar in the days of the Crusaders. As our liberty boats enter- ed through the portals of the inner harbor we passed the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, a 100 foot bronze statue listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the An- cient World. Some of us wandered through the city, viewed the Street of the Knights and the Old City, others shop- ped at the bazaars, still others made an acquaint- ance With Ouzo and Me- taxas, the native drinks. Our final impression was one of respect for the Greeks in surviving such corrosive beverages. .-maui Temple of Apollo
