LETTER TO ALL HANDS Dear Shipmates : Although deployment to the Med can never be called a Pleasure Cruise nevertheless the spirit enthusiasm and hard work displayed by you in the tour covered by this Cruise Book made it seem just that Rarely has three and one-half months in my experience passed so profitably and enjoyably. CECIL an outstanding gradeb was, a professional high spot and our week in Palma de Mallorca ffea- turing the two ship s partiesl will always be remembered as a distinctly recreational success. We had our gloomy periods C28 days at sea before our first liberty port for exampleb but all in all both we and the Navy gained by the experience. It is difficult to single out individual events, but the inspection by COMSIXTI-IFLT fwhich netted the This Cruise Book accurately and humorously, pictures the track of the CHARLIE P from start to finish I am sure that it will be a source of enjoyment to you and an excellent record of our travels during the period 6 November 1956 to 18 February 1957. Best of all, it provides us a means of reinforcing our always fallible memories as Zo whvo was that Boatswains Mate who fell overboard near the zores. My thanks are extended to the Staff who labored long hours to make the Cruise Book a reality, and my gratitude and admiration are extended to all of you-the Officers and crew of the CECIL-for able experience. lf .l i ga. We knew that we were scheduled to 80 to the Mediterranean, brit it was a surprise to iind ourselves in the powerful Task Force 26 with the new guided missile cruiser Boston and super-carrier Forrestal. -t This was not just a routine deployment to the Med, and we experienced a thrill at knowing we were the cream of the crop-the first line of the U. U Finally we joined the Sixth Fleet itself and were proud to know that we were adding our strength to that area just as U. S. warships have done since the early nineteenth century. Beginning with the War with Tripoli in 1802, and almost continuously since 1886, American sea power has operated in this area of more than one million square miles which the ancients called 'the center of the earth. The Mediterranean was of strategic importance in world affairs centuries before America was dis- covered. In the countries bordering this sea civilization was born. Phoenicians, Romans, and other powerful peoples fought to control it. Throughout history it has been the Vital sea link between Europe, Africa, and the countries of the Near and Middle East. The Mediterranean has been called the loveliest of all seas, favored by situation, shape, and climate above all others, and likewise before all others discovered and sailed. Here the classic ruins of the ancient Greek city-states alternated with the Byzantine, the medi- aeval, and the Turkish buildings in an imposing array. The greatest' architectural influence upon the city was left by the Knights of St. John who had left exten- sive fortifications. From our anchorage in the bay the view of the grim walls easily led our imaginations to wander and we thought how the city must have looked quite similar in the days of the Crusaders. As our liberty boats enter- ed through the portals of the inner harbor we passed the site of the Colossus of Rhodes, a 100 foot bronze statue listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the An- cient World. Some of us wandered through the city, viewed the Street of the Knights and the Old City, others shop- ped at the bazaars, still others made an acquaint- ance With Ouzo and Me- taxas, the native drinks. Our final impression was one of respect for the Greeks in surviving such corrosive beverages. .-maui Temple of Apollo STREET OF THE KNIGHTS LI DO 1 Here, where the acropolis was be- fore the acropolis of Athens we wandered among the ruins of one of the famous three cities of antiquity. Helen of Troy stopped in this beauti- ful natural harbor on her sad trip home after the Trojan War and gave? the temple a bust of herself in pure: 4 amber. Later the Romans captured the acropolis and carried off hundreds of statues which still ornament Rome and the museums of Europe. The beautiful Lindian plates are also known the World over. The Byzan' tines built a beautiful little churfih here, but in turn were driven Off by the Turks. Now that their city is 21 part of Rhodes and Greece, the citi- zens of Lindos are still appreciative of the significance of their historiC independent past. , CHRISTMAS IN LEGHORN .A J U' l vw ' gp W 3 W 5 Q A Santa Wilmore and Little Friend LEGHOR Christmas found us in Leghorn, Italy, and soon we were calling it Livorno like the Italians. Carols beamed out from the loud-speakers on the fantail and as We listened we felt a keen loneli- ness for home during this holiday seai son. The deaf-and-mute orphans from! a nearby school came aboard for f party, presents, and a visit by S3J1tQ Wilmore. One of the main advantages of Leg-. horn, we soon found out, was the DTOXQ imity of other cities. Pisa was 0111. about 15 miles away, and many of the crew managed to scrape up the twentl' or thirty dollars for a two or three day tour to Florence or Rome.
