what is the school, but the students? the earmarks of the school . . . people, students, teachers, and fun . . . are not the essence of the school, but only the tangible outcome of the perseverance of many men ... the school is the prod- uct of a variety of people . . . rote, band, coeds, and gbe’s ... it is instinctive to human nature to band together in societies, tribes, or groups ... the students will, in turn, reimburse the city by mak- ing use of its opportunities and by spending there their talents and abilities . . .

march 28, 1926, was an important date for Charles h. milby senior high school, on that day, 13 teachers and 212 students marched down broadway from the harrisburg school to 1601 broad- way, the site of the new milby senior high school. after a great deal of controversy, it was agreed that the school would be named for a prominent man, Charles h. milby, who served his community in many official capacities, civic, political, and educational, it was felt that his outstanding contributions to the community entitled him to this honor. mr. w. i. Stevenson was hired as the new principal in the summer of 1925, and served the com- munity well until 1960. at this time mr. roscoe bayless became the principal, after having served the school faithfully for eleven additional years mr. bayless relinquished the reins of the school this past summer of 1971. milby is proud to boast of another outstanding educator in the person of mr. claude h. brinkley, jr. as her new principal. milby continued to grow from 212 in the spring of 1926 to the present total of 2,073 students, the number of graduates has increased from 35 to the present 677. the number of teachers has correspondingly increased as there were 13 in 1926 and 94 are presently employed at milby . . . yes, onward milby . . . 6
