Genesis: in the beginning we start anew . . . 7 972 buffalo staff top row: editor-in-chief, vickie Cunningham; faculty, mary arquette; who's who and favorites, scottie lawson. second row: happenings, bennie liccioni; co-joint ventures, jackie patton and cathy sims. third row: graduates and assistant photographer, janell lundine; middle class, mary murray; underdogs, martha medellin. fourth row: patrons, dan me carver; artist, Charles jetty; photographer, chris kuhlman. march 28, 1926, was an important date for Charles h. milby senior high school, on that day, 13 teachers and 212 students marched down broadway from the harrisburg school to 1601 broad- way, the site of the new milby senior high school. after a great deal of controversy, it was agreed that the school would be named for a prominent man, Charles h. milby, who served his community in many official capacities, civic, political, and educational, it was felt that his outstanding contributions to the community entitled him to this honor. mr. w. i. I. seastrand . . . band and orchestra photos by Chris kuhlman mmm .i r- monuments! what are they? the very pyramids have for- gotten their builders, or to whom they were dedicated, the deeds, not stones, are the true monuments of the great. — motley to be selected as an outstanding student many things are important . . . service to the school . . . activities . . . aca- demic standing ... all these, no one apart, can combine to create an outstanding senior . . . 37 “fields are won by those who believe in the winning.” — t. w. higginson david alien david alien has stacked up honors in both athletics and organizations, he was a member of the junior varsity and varsity football teams having served one year as the captain of the team due to his outstanding athletic s'r ability david has also lettered three years in basketball. along with his sports activities, david is the secretary-treasurer for the fellowship of Christian athletes and is C,L a member of mu alpha theta and the letterman’s club. co david was chosen by his classmates as the most handsome in both his sophomore and junior years an 38 “never idle a moment, but thrifty and thoughtful of others.” — longfellow tommy arnold varsity with many varied activities and honors to his credit tommy arnold has proven himself to be a fine leader and athletic sincere friend. tommy’s manly activities include the national honor society, the Spanish honor society, mu alpha theta, key . ancj jS club, president of the letterman’s club, interact, fellowship of Christian athletes, a member of the 1971 home- coming committee, and head row captain of flashcards. irs listed in who’s who of american high school students, tommy was on the all district baseball teams in 1970 and 1§71. he was also awarded the most improved player and the hitting championship awards in 1970. 39 ‘‘to write well is to think well, to feel well, and to render well; it is to possess at once intellect, soul, and taste.” — buffon cynthia camp intelligence, initiative, friendliness, and scholarship characterize cynthia camp, she has participated in and led in many school activities as well as collected many honors and awards. J cynthia is vice president of the Spanish club, a member of the Spanish honor society, national honor society, ide national forensic league, youth for Christ, student council, and blackfriars, cynthia is president of the junior mc red cross, and writer’s club, in addition, she is the secretary of lambda sigma alpha and mu alpha theta. co her awards are plentiful, she has received the american legion award, colson awards in essay and spelling, ' the national merit letter of commendation, first place in spelling for harris county, and first place medals in de- be bate, spelling, and number sense. dependability best describe joanne carrigan. joanne has served on the executive board of student council for three years, having served as the vice pres- 3ty, ident in 1971-1972. she is the parliamentarian for the national honor society, a member of the french club, lior modern dance club, mu alpha theta, national forensic league, and served on one of the 1971 homecoming { committees. school students and was a finalist for the most popular junior. 41 good humor and generos- ity carry the day with popu- lar hearts all over the world.” — a. smith jeff dowling jeff dowling’s great personality is only one of the traits that makes him outstanding, while at milby jeff has contributed his energies and initiative to the betterment of the school, jeff has won the american legion award, has been sergeant-at-arms of lambda sigma alpha, and has been a ar member of interact, the key club and the letterman’s club, he has played varsity basketball for two years at sti milby his most outstanding seniors at milby is billy Johnson he has been active in many of the school's organizations he has served as vice president of the key club i a and mu alpha theta and has been the billy was nominated for a listing in who's who among amencan high school students and was a delegate to the key club conventions in 1971 and 1972 in addition to his many scholastic honors, billy has played junior varsity baseball for two years 43 “too busy with crowded hours to fear to live or die . . — emerson lynn I ary a singularly captivating personality and one strong in her ideas is lynn lary. lynn was chosen major of the co-ed cadettes for 1971-72. she is secretary of the future homemakers of america, a member of the future teachers of america, modern dance club, Spanish club, the national honor so ciety, mu alpha theta, and golden m choir, lynn was the 1971 homecoming halftime co-chairman and is an honorary member of the girl’s booster club. included in lynn’s accomplishments is her d.a.r. award and being named the junior woman of rotary, as well as the fact that she was a delegate to girls’ state, lynn is listed in who’s who among american high school stu- dents, as well as a member of the society of outstanding american high school students, lynn has also received the fannie davis award for most outstanding junior. 44 “humor is the harmony of the heart.” — jerrold kristi luckow being sincere is a part of kristi luckow. she seems to excel in everything and remains wonderfully down to rs oi earth. r s0 in her years at milby kristi has had the honor of being selected junior cheerleader and at the present time is is an the senior head cheerleader. 8 « kristi’s list of clubs includes the modern dance club, tri-hi-y, future teacher’s of america, girls’ booster club, well future homemakers of america. kristi was a flashcards row captain and served as the 1971 homecoming deco- I stu rations co-chairman. our outstanding senior was proud of being I_____________________________________________________________________ bill peckham is everywhere on campus and a familiar face to everyone, his sincere interest in milby as a whole makes him outstanding in everything he undertakes. bill holds the unique position of serving as the president of various organizations, among them are: the stu- ti dent council, the national forensic league, lambda sigma alpha, the Spanish honor society, the Spanish club a he is also the vice president of the national honor society and a member of interact and mu alpha theta. in the way of awards, bill has received the american legion award, junior rotarian, boys’ state representative s best boy debater of 1970-71, prep bowl alternate for 1970-71. listed in who’s who of american high school students, bill received an award for the highest p.s.a.t. score in a 1971. 46 “a true man never frets about his place in the world, but just slides into it by the gravitation of his na- ture, and swings there as easily as a star.” — chapin richard shanks 5 a scholastically, richard shanks is tar above average, yet his interests include many different things. his many achievements include president of the national honor society and interact, vice president of na- tu- tional forensic league, and parliamentarian of the student council, richard is a member of the key club and mu jb alpha theta. richard’s awards are plentiful, he is listed in who’s who of american high school students and has been cho- ve, sen as junior rotarian. he is a finalist for national merit and received the n.e.d.t. certificate of merit. another honor of richard s was being chosen outstanding debater at abilene Christian college tournament ) in and he placed second in u.i.l. district in 1970 and 1971. 47
