Young W. I. worked at odd jobs, pur- sued an acting career in his backyard with penny show. W. I. played hard too, especially as a southpaw pitcher for his team at Cooper High. Eventually he found his way into the teaching profession. And it was then that people began to know there was something special about W. I. Stevenson. W. I. had a habit of expanding without changing. So it seemed perfectly natural that after graduating, he entered Texas Christian University. Never once did he refuse a job to further his education. Selling bibles, evangelist singer, and purchasing agent all became familiar to him. His dream became a reality when he told his wife, Kittie, Let ' s go get a school. fivet Ovni c State Certificate THE HOLDER HEREOF, J ' iret 0 a c State Certificate which en(.( e. lo conlraci to leach in Iht puhlic nl.uolt nf ih, .S .;, iuagiiis lr$h„llbe, aliJfo,apc,iBdofrWO Y EARS fr.r,, ,r,. rr Mr. niul Mrs. Stevenson Ic.ivc for Portlnnd. OrcRoii tc attend the .innu.il meeting of the Associ.ition foi Second.uy Principals. ' ' 7 Mr. Stevenson hauls hay on his farm during the war years. The Stevcnsons join in singing a church hyr But when the war came that might have torn his country apart, no one doubted what W. I. would do. He became one of the few white collar farmers in Texas. He was the man behind the plow — the man behind the hoe — the man in the barnyard with his clean, starched, white shirt. Succeeding has become a habit with W. I. Stevenson, 35 years as principal of Milby, as secretary of the Texas Association of Secondary Schools, as President of Houston Administra- tors, and many more. But working and succeeding were not only a habit in the teaching profession but in the church as well. No matter how near or far away the church, God has played a large role in W. I. ' s life. First as a member, then as a Sunday School teacher, a deacon — and at last the re- ward — an Elder in the Magnolia Christian Church.
