I The Milby Coed Cadettc officers twirl fite batons. Spirit Sparks the Intangibles of Big Blue’ Spirit is everywhere — it is something that every student has at Milby. Spirit at Milby is so great because Milby students are spirit. Everyone enters into every phase of campus life with enthusiasm, vigor, and happy confidence. Spirit is seen and felt in so many places . . . the faces of the campus favorites, the seniors at graduation, the editors of publications, strug- gling drama students, the studious scientists of tomorrow, the cheerleaders, the co-eds. the i athletic teams, and jubilant couples dancing after a football game. In the classroom, at the pep rallies, and in the stands, as well as on the playing field, the Buff’s spirit is evident. Petty differences and prejudices are forgotten and each student works together toward a com- mon goal, sharing the responsibility of holding high the spirit left by the last Buffalo family. Spirit reflects the true aspects of campus life and student personality — the freedom and energy of the students to make a colorful life at Milby. Sponsor 1957 COED CADETTES BRING HONOR An ORGANIZATION which has grown from 30 members in 1926 to more than 200 can truly be called 3 TRADITION. Such a group, which has an origin that goes back al- most as far as the school's itself, we cherish for irreplaceable memories and an undefined pride. Since the longevity itself of the organization should indicate its invaluable activities, it is deserving of our praise and respect. Of course we honor this group for its past, only after first applauding its SERVICES of school, charity, and civic. The members of this organization usher at the Ice Capades and at The Houston Fat Stock Show every year. They attend events of public interests such as ground breakings, parades, and the Mardi Gras. They help the less fortunate by selling poppies on Armistice Day and ushering at the Crippled Children's Ball. Through performance and the Carat Show, they provide entertainment for students. Also, they sell school directories, rib- bons. pompoms, candy, magazines and Christ- mas cards for the convenience and pleasure of both teachers and students. This year the Cadettes presented the school with the six flags of Texas. In the performance of so many services, the members become REPRESENTATIVES of 6 TO ALMA MATER the school—of its attitude and ideals. They arc seen by the public as a paragon, creative and purposeful. Though they may express them- selves with modern drills and equipment, the basic motives have remained unchanged since the beginning, to advance good citizenship and school patriotism. Thus, it is that they symbol- ize the goals which the student body, as a whole, strives to attain. The most important function of this or- ganization's services, which is certainly a tra- dition and of which the members arc truly representatives, is the promoting of school SPIRIT. Through parades, musical selections, and cheers, they show to all the pride we have in our athletic department. They let others know of our athlete's fight-to-the-finish atti- tude. By their organized efforts, they tell the players that the whole school shares this de- termination with them and backs them up. thus boosting morale. Without this group, our games would have a minimum of pep. show, and liveliness. With these concepts in mind, the staff of the 1958 BUFFALO, believing that the culmina- tion of a dedication should include TRADI- TION. Interesting programs this year have included a panel discussion by doctors from the American Cancer Society, a speech by the U. of H. director of coun- seling on College Entrance Tests. and Mr. Henry C. Smith, physics demon- stration. The East End YMCA direc- tor and the Jr. Achievement sent repre- sentatives to speak. Twice a year PT-A holds open house. Ti Main Building on the campus is the center of the educational program. Here, stu- dents attend classes and enjoy the spacious and well equipped library. At Milby there is a friendly and enthusiastic atmosphere that encourages the creative mind. This creates good citizenship. Yes. we believe that it takes more than mor- tar and brick to make a great institution. 12 [NI STR A TION The main purpose of a high school is to edu- cate the students and to prepare them for col- lege. Directing the educational program are the principal, assistant principal, dean, counselors, and faculty members. Their position requires tact and understanding in the everyday routine. Theirs’ is the responsibility for today: theirs' must be the plans that will create tomorrow’s achievements. Our society stresses the scholastic aspect: our administration strives to furnish the young people with the knowledge, the needs for a mod- ern world. STEVENSON RECALLS MEMORIES History is replete with the recordings of the past. Many occasions arc made to live again when we turn the pages of the school annual. The Milby Blackfriars hustle into the wings as the curtain rises on another spectacular production. The group, composed of students interested in dramatics, takes part in large productions and one-act plays. They work toward perfection in action, speech, expression, and direction. A min- imum of forty hours work after school is re- quired for membership. Band Focal Point Of Top Groups Whether marching into a crowded football stadium or presenting a concert, the Milby Buff Band is a focal point of campus interest. At the beginning of the season the band works hard to get the musicians marching, thinking and playing together, for each new Shirlene Walls. Head Majorette season brings a partially new band with a tradi- tion to uphold, that of putting on a colorful and unique show and synchronizing precision movements with good band music. Well, it looks like it’s time again for our annual'' chat. How fast the days seemed to have gone by. but then we did have lots of fun. Let's sec . . . Before school even began, my kids had a get-acquainted party at the Chief's house and found who was who and what was what. Weeks passed before the next big event took place—the pizza booth. Yep. I was the site of a pizza selling concern complete with soft blue lights, some candles, old-country checkered tablecloths, and a variety of dance music. I even had a genuine looking Chef Visicy heading the KP club. I was almost deserted for a couple of days when my flock went to see the publisher, alias Operation Madball (Specie—Corpi Christus). Somewhere along the line SAM had an escapade with lollipops towards which she had been disinclined ever since. Not long afterwards I found out I was about to get an overhaul job. Sure enough, bright and early one morning several members of my family came armed with brushes and supplied with lavender paint. I was stripped clean of my furnishings and then lashed on all sides by the artistic strokes of my little chicks. During this episode I learned that I harbored an agile second-story man (alias Sisk.) Never shall I forget Martha's mania for dancing, cheer- leader R. L.. editor Lynda, and the philosophical duel of David and Tom who cut the heart of Gail, the sobbing spectator, more often than they chopped down each other’s defenses. Colonel Benny Gillis Tradition has it that when asked to help win World War I General Pershing replied: Send me men who can shoot and salute.” This fairly well sums up the pro- gram of the Milby ROTC. The new cadet is assigned to a squad. He is directly under the squad leader who watches over him closely for the first semester. He learns to march and some cadets, oddly enough have trouble remembering which foot is left and which is right. He studies markmanship. using a .22 rifle and he may join the rifle team if he desires. The drill platoon is a volunteer organization which teaches points of close-order drill. He learns to keep the M-l rifle clean and free from rust. His bearing becomes important. His brass must gleam 3nd his shoes must be in perfect condition. Saluting and the use of Sir becomes second nature. The weight of full respon- sibility falls on his shoulders as a senior for the leaders whom he first knew have gone and he himself is now the Old Man” or Company Commander. The mornings arc brisk with the sounds drowned out completely or magnified greatly by the cheering crowds led by six lively figures. The FOOTBALL spirit has taken hold of the whole school. As wet winter days begin to set in. the spotlight shifts exclusively to an indoor activity. Irregular short-lived outbreaks come from the ever watchful onlookers when an occa- sional RIP breaks the constant palter of the basketball. Female yeomen take to the target range as ARCHERY season begins. Below the auditor- ium. where many do not hear it comes a series of crashing splashes followed by regular gargles. For the aqua-inclined individuals. SWIMMING season brings many thrills. Quickly following is the sesawing of a white felt ball as it sails back and forth across the TENNIS court net. Almost simultaneously, we hear a hefty swoosh and a hearty “fore as the players clamor to the links. Here and there a tape measure is heard being unrolled as the TRACK team enters the sports picture. Henderson scored their only touchdown and also gained a touchback in the second quarter. The tables were nearly turned during the last seconds of the game when Henry Norman made a 65 yard touchdown punt return, only to have it called back on a clipping penalty. Milby lost again to Galena Park in the second game of the season. 25 to 0. The team led by quar- terback Henry Norman, and fullback Eugene Bunton. suffered a serious setback in the first quarter when Norman fractured his collarbone. Don Mitchell ran around the Yellow Jacket line twice to put the Buffs within striking distance, but Galean Park proved too strong. The third game of the season resulted in Milby's trampling Texas City. 12 to 0. Total Buff yardage was three times as great as that of the Stingarccs. who came close to scoring only in the first quarter. Don Mitchell carried the ball over the goal line for Milby both times. In the air. on the ground, all the way around, the Buffaloes stomped the Stingarees. On October 3. better than 4000 fans saw the Blue and Gold beat the Austin Mustangs. 7 to 6. break- ing an eight year jinx. Three minutes before halftime Lcs Fullerton sneaked over for Milby's only touch- down. This and Keith Huggins' conversion gave the Herd the points needed to beat Austin for the first time since 1949. Jimmy Jones and Don Mitchell each intercepted Mustang passes. The Bellairc Cardinals bowed to the might of the point boots. In the 2nd period. Bunton plowed over the end for a TD. Later Torres' interception of a Card pass resulted in another Buff score when, several plays afterwards. Fullerton passed 30 yards to Connell Pitts for a TD. Milby walloped San Jacinto next. 20 to 6. Mitchell scored first for the Big Blue when he ran seven yards in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 6-3II at the halftime. Huggins kicked the 2 extra points. The Bisons scalped Lamar 6 to 0 for the first time in eight years and prolonged their winning streak to 5 games, their longest since they won the city title in 1945 wh a 10-game sweep. Milby's single TD came late in the second quarter when Mitchell ran 4 yards to the goal line. After a 5 yard penalty nullified his conversion. Huggins couldn't try again because of a stray snap. The Reagan Bulldogs upset Milby in the first district game of the year. 27 to 14. At the half the Bulldogs led 7 to 0. Later the result of 2 unsuccessful Milby punts were touchdowns for the Bulldogs. In the 4th period both teams scored once again. The Buff's 2nd district game brought a 7 to 0 victory over the Davis Panthers. Eugene Bunton went over from the 1 yard line for the only TD of the game. The Panthers could not move either in the air or on the ground against the rugged defense of Milby. Don Mitchell ran 71 yards for what looked like a TD. but was called back on clipping. The last game of the year the Blue and Gold Gridiron strategists plan their next move. A mad scramble and . . . One of the early thrillers came on Thanksgiving night when the Buffs defeated the defending 4-A State Champions, the Port Arthur Yellow Jackets. 45 to 39. Jerry Simmons and Buster Sullivan were the top scorers with 1 1 and 1 5 points, respectively. At the Nacogdoches meet. Big Blue won Divi- sion Two of the Annual SFA Basketball Boosters tourney by first defeating the Sam Houston Tigers. 50 to 46. and then subduing the Lufkin Panthers, 50 to 41. Don Eckleman and Buster Sullivan were high-score men with 17 and 14 points. Sullivan was also named to the Division All-Tournament team. The Lamar Redskins fell to the Bisons in a close game of 56 to 49. Trailing by only 4 points in the third quarter, the Indians pressed on. but Alton Adams worked furiously in the final quarter to keep ahead. Billy Paling. WIN DISTRICT TITLE In a real thriller, the Blue and Gold downed Sam Houston 44 to 41 February 8. Alton Adams, who scored 18 points, controlled both boards on re- bunds to put Milby in the District 9 4-A lead. The Tigers were never more than 4 points behind, but Big Blue fought hard all the way. The Milby Cagers defeated Jeff Davis again on February 12. 57 to 43. Being pressed hard until the last quarter. Milby pulled ahead due to the high scoring of Adams. Sullivan, and Eckleman. Milby made off with the District 9 4-A Cham- pionship again this year. The Buffaloes had a 5-0 record in District play, ending with a 52 to 39 victory over Sam Houston's Tigers on February 19. Since 1944 Milby has started a tradition by being a leading contender in district every year. In district play they upheld this tradition by winning 27 con- secutive games.
