'pviecu id, We, the staff of the Buffalo, have endeavored to present within this volume a partial record of our 1948-1949 school term. We offer this year- book with the hope that in the days to come when you turn these pages you will find your hearts warmed with memories of schoolday scenes, incidents, and friends. Our wish is that these memories may tend to bind you closer to your school and to each other as you view this pictured panorama of your life spent in fair Milby. Miss Gladys Rose jbedicatioa In an age when fear chills the hearts of men, when clouds of uncertainty darken the paths of nations, when distrust breeds enemies on ev- ery side, when science bares secrets potential- ly destructive of the human race, we, the young- er generation - the boys and girls seated before the teacher's desk in every classroom - turn with hopeful hearts to the future. We hold the conviction that out of fear will come courage, out of darkness will come light, out of distrust will come faith, out of the scientific laborator- ies will come material benefits never before enjoyed by mankind. Because we believe it possible to build a free world graced by moral, educational, and spiritual enlightenment with equal opportunity for all, we dedicate this year- book to a BOUNTIFUL FUTURE - a future which we dare to claim as our rightful heritage. uotAuuoj, Aq 'TTYH A31SX0O1 pp w ?t y) VTpiiH vy) jjv pm ppcr fo utopw Tyf mg 99V pp «7 7 r7 mHr y VV wf -TWprf 7J) vptf pTlflfop £ 10 LOWERING THE FLAG 'Ici te 0 @G4ite it ?. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. ?awxfUte i s4ctivitCe Sfcartd s4ctvertcde HeKt4 BOARD OF EDUCATION EWING WERLEIN . . . . Qualities of citizenship, leadership, and scholarship are con- sidered by the faculty committee. Only June graduates or summer school grad- uates are eligible. One boy is selected for each month of the school year. On each Friday of his month the Junior Rotarian becomes the luncheon guest of the Harris- burg Rotary Club. On the last Friday in May the nine boys thus honored are responsible for the program of entertainment at the Club's luncheon. Milby appreciates the opportunity for its students to gain first hand infor- mation about service clubs in general and feels indebted to the Harrisburg Rotary Club which has made this opportunity available. FOOTBALL REVIEW '48 By Lewis Raymer The 1948 Milby Buffaloes brought honor to their school and their individual stars as they compiled the second best record in the school's history: won 8. lost 1. tied 1. From the first of the season the Buffs were predicted to battle it out with Lamar for the city crown. Not until the finale of the season were the Kivellmen proved only second best. Naturally such a team was to have many honors heaped upon its players. Four Buffs made all-city teams. They were Donald Carpenter, back; Edwin James, center; Bucky Barsh, tackle; and Bobby Dorsey, end. Two of these boys received the added distinction of being chosen on the All-State City eleven. These two were the Herd's co captains: Donald Carpen ter, high scoring back; and Edwin James, great offensive and defensive center. The Buffaloes opened the season by winning over Pasadena 19-7. After a slow first half which saw the Eagles dominate the play, the Buffs came back with Carpenter scoring three times, once on a 49 yard run. Bobby Dorsey set up the first tally by recovering a fum- ble on the Eagle five. Sparked by Carpenter, who scored four TD's, Ralph Cook, and Johnny Rollins, who set them up, the Herd came home from Dallas with a 24-0 victory over Woodrow Wilson. The game was never in doub4 as the Buffs counted early and were never headed. In their first home appearance the Kivellmen routed the Galena Park Yellow jackets 27-0 after a slow start. Carpenter tallied twice and Cook scored once on ground plays. A Gentry-to-Owens pass accounted for the other tally after Charles Aranyas had returned an intercepted pass 70 yards to the Jacket's 10 yard line. In spite of a Sam Houston team that wouldn't say quits, the Herd opened the city con- ference with a 27-0 win. The game was much closer than the score indicated as the Tigers threatened twice but lost the ball on fumbles. Carpenter scored the first touchdown after Dan Hart had recovered a Tiger fumble. Flanagan's pass interception and 72 yard return gave the Herd another tally. The Buffs counted twice more as the Carp scored from the 4 and Hopkins intercepted another pass and carried it to pay dirt. In a real thriller with Davis, Carpenter again led the team with jaunts of 23 and 62 yards. The first score came on an 83 yard drive climaxed in Skinny-legs 23 yard gain over right tackle. Carpenter scored again with 62 yards over the left side of the line. Davis scored in the latter stages of the game to make the final count of 13-6. As the season rolled along it became more evident that the Milby backfield was oper- ating behind a great line. From end to end the forward wall was outplaying all opponents on defense as well as offense. Billy Watson, Bobby Dorsey, Jack Owens, and Joe Martinez were snagging passes and holding down the corners at the end positions. At tackles Bucky Barsh. Donald Dean, Delbert Warwick, and Bill Hearron were handling their positions in capable fashion. The guard positions were in the good hands of A1 Barsh, Jimmy Poston, and Billy Silva. At center the Buffs had one of the greatest in the state—Edwin James. James and Dan Hart did the best line backing in the city. The Buffs continued on their victory march by downing San Jacinto 27-14. Carpenter also continued his tremendous scoring pace by crossing the goal line three times. Gentry- to-Dorsey passes accounted for 12 more points. Attention had already turned to next week's big game with Reagan. Before 23,000 spectators the Buffs and Reagan Bulldogs battled to a 13-13 -tie. Milby forged ahead in the first quarter as Carpenter broke loose on an 80 yard dash to pay dirt. Hearron, who had been doing some great kicking, converted. The Bulldogs came back and scored from the 24 yard line. The Herd drew ahead by a touchdown as Carpenter, climax- ing a 72 yard drive, scored from the one. Hearron failed to convert, bringing the count to 13-6. With only four minutes of play. Reagan took to the air and knotted the game at 13-13. For the first time the Buffs were forced to come from behind in downing their East End rivals, the Austin Mustangs, 13-6. Carpenter and Gentry accounted for the Herd's two tallies. The team, backed by a large group of fans, journeyed to Orange to play a supposedly stronger eleven in the rain; however, our local boys proved the better as they won 26-14 with Carpenter, Cook, Watson, and Hart scoring. It was only fitting that the final game of the season should decide the city championship. Milby and Lamar both entered the contest with unbeaten, once tied rceords. Fans, 20,000 strong, were on hand to see the Redskins completely control the ball in the first half and score 13 points as Chanslor and Sanderson each crossed the double stripe. In the second half the Buffs turned the tables as Lamar failed to make even a first down. The Kivellmen pushed the ball from one end of the field to the other but failed to step into the land of promise. When the gun sounded the statistics were about even except for the one that counted—points scored: Lamar 13, Milby 0. The Buffaloes successfully defended their '48 city title by again win- ning the crown. Although the Herd had its setbacks, they compiled a conference record of 9 wins and 3 losses, and a season record at 24 wins and 8 losses. As a result of taking the title, Milby received the privilege of representing Houston in the first State City Conference Playoffs. The team took runner up honors in the playoffs as they advanced to the finals be- fore losing to Paschal of Fort Worth by only one point. Featuring a squad small in both number and size, the Herd compiled its excellent record with fine floor play, teamwork, and ''hustle '. At guards. Bobby Flanagan and Joe Martinez turned in the finest performance at that position in the city. Martinez and Flan- agan, who made All-City, and Gerald Patton, the little ball-hawk, sparked the Buffs through out the season. The forwards were Billy Watson. Earl Tipton, and Travis Tyler. These boys, though often at a height disadvantage, controlled the backboards nicely and were tough to evade on defense. A. J. Schlapkohl was at center until his graduation at mid-term. His loss seriously hampered the Herd, but Billy Watson and Richard Wheeler moved up to soon fill the gap in excellent fashion. Wheeler quickly developed into one of the most dependable performers in the Buff line-up and proved himself worthy of his berth on the All-State team. Other capable substitutes not to be overlooked were Duane Raymond, Eugene Paschal, and Bobby Johnson. The regular season was a hectic one in which the Buffaloes had their ups and downs. They won their first eight games and then ran into trouble, dropping three out of the last four games. Nearly all the victories as well as the defeats were closely fought contests with only a few points difference in the final scores. The Buffaloes entered the state playoffs as a dark horse. Throughout the tournament their height placed them at a disadvantage which they had to make up in tight defensive and careful offensive ball handling. Against Ft. Worth Poly, and Brackenridge the Buffs after very slow starts built up comfortable leads over the opponents to win going away. In the final with Paschal they fell quickly behind in the first half and then came back strong to nearly nip the Panther ; however. Paschal's control of the backboards proved just one point too much, making the score 41-40. Congratulations to the 1949 Basketball Team and to Coach Lee Beeson for their very fine season, one of the best in the school's history and one which the school will look back upon with pride.
