ALLEN...................................Sponsor JACK NICHOLS..............................President An indication of true school spirit is a worthwhile working organization. We honor the Booster Club of Milby for its industrious work and co-operation in all the undertakings of the school. The Booster Club was organized in 1944 by a group of students under the capable sponsorship of Mrs. Fern Saxton. The new organization was a marked success and the following year it proved to be one of the most active organizations of the school. In 1946 the Boosters were sponsored by Mrs. Maurice Allen. The Booster Club had originally been composed of only two rep- resentatives from each home room, but in 1947 the membership was extended to include all the student body, with two from each homeroom acting as their representatives. The projects were selected by and decisions voted upon by the representatives, but the work was completed by all members. The club has successfully completed several projects this year. The Boosters face one of their heaviest tasks during the football season. As everyone knows, this task is to keep the spirit of sportsmanship flying high in every Milby heart. This spirit reached a high peak the day that Milby played Lamar in the final and most important game of the year. Every teacher was presented with a beautiful corsage or boutonniere. All the halls were draped with blue and gold streamers. Stands were set up in the halls and students sold corsages to the girls and blue and gold ribbons to the boys. A section of seats at the stadium was reserved for the Boosters. At the game our sponsor was presented with a huge bouquet of gold chrysanthemums. The Boosters were in fine spirit and cheered the team as it had never been cheered before. Al- though we did not win the game, we shall never forget that wonderful day of hope and joy. This year the Boosters are expecting to complete another project—the gift of a large electric score board with a permanent buffalo representing Milby and with changeable symbols for other schools. The Boosters have given many dances for the entertainment of the student body, have helped with the advertising in the Plains- man, and have helped pay for repairs on the school juke box. They also gave the basket ball banquet and helped stage the Valentine Sweetheart program. Because the Booster Club has proved its unquestioned co-operation with all the activities and organizations of Milby, we honor the Booster Club. iiM OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Shirley Jacobs Secretary-Treasurer Henry Burton Vice-President David Wilcox President LEFT TO RIGHT: FRONT ROW Wilcox, Kyser, Hildebrand, Raymer Pequeno, Glass, Stokes, Burton. When the last gun had sounded, Milby was in a tie for second place with San Jacinto and Davis, with Lamar heading the list. The Buffs got off to a good start on the championship trail as they beat Woodrow Wilson of Dallas 21-6, September 20, at Public School Stadium. The Buffs offensive play was paved by Donald Carpenter, speedy hard driving back, who scored two of the three touchdowns for the Blue and Gold clad boys. After Wilson the Bisons took on the Robert E. Lee Ganders from Goose Creek on a wet and muddy gridiron and came out with a 6-0 victory. The Buffs were out to avenge a defeat suffered in the 1945 Bi-district affair, and when Bill Flana- gan pitched a pass to “Corky Burns in the end rone their mission was accomplished. Then the Buffs traveled to Ft. Worth to play the air mind- ed boys from Amon Carter Riverside and using an air game of their own they came home with a 32-7 win under their belt. It was in this game that end Billy Wright was recognized by local sports writers as all-state material. The big boy scored three touchdowns and the Buffs came home to defend their title. When the Blue and Gold beat Sam Houston 32-0 on Octo- ber 1 2, it looked like another title was in store for the Harris- burg school. The scrappy Tigers put up a great fight but boys like Bill Wright, Charles Tissue, Corky Burns’ and Alfred Quast proved too much for them. After Sam Houston came a game that Milbyites will not for- get for a long time, the Jeff Davis game. The Buffs were heavy favorites, but the Panthers from Jeff Davis had an aerial game in mind and stunned the Buffs with a 13-7 win. Jack Brown scored the lone tally for Milby on a short pass from back Billy Joe Flanagan. The loss to Davis greatly damaged the Buffs' chance for another championship. Coach Kivell's boys got back into the win column the next week with a 21-6 victory over the Golden Bears from San Jacinto. The Driscollmen afforded little competition for the beefy Buffs and the game was soon forgotten and the high- ly rated Reagan Bulldogs were next in line. In what was the most surprising and run-away game of the season, the hustling Buffs overcome Lamar Camp’s Reagan Bulldogs 32-7 before a large crowd of 13,000 cash customers. It was the Buffs all the way as they piled up 411 yards on the ground as Donald Carpenter, sensational back, averaged 1 1 yards each time he carried the ball. Austin's Mustangs were not much more successful than the Bulldogs were, as they scored two touchdowns in the last quarter to come out on the short end of a 34-12 score. The Buffs looked good in this game and talk of the Lamar game on November 27 was spreading. The Kivellmen took time out from the District race to stampede a lighter St. Thomas team, 39-0 at St. Thomas Sta- dium on Thursday, November 14. Bill Hartsfield, who was out a good part of the season from injuries, began to look good for the Buffs. The Blue and Gold clad boys then took a week lay-off and began to practice for the game which proved to be the most publicized affair in the state. Rain was coming down onto Public School Stadium when the Milby team took to the field on the night of November 27, 1946, and the field was the muddiest it had been all season long. This was the game that commentators and sports writers refused to predict. The big Buffs just couldn’t get started on the wet gridiron and the game remained a punting duel until the third quarter when John Champion, Redskin back, broke loose on an end sweep and took out up the sidelines for the score. J. K. King converted and the score stood 7-0. The other Lamar tally was scored by Champion also, and when Flanagan received a bad pass from center near the end of the game the Redskins scored a safety and took home a 16-0 vic- tory. Milby played great ball all season and again made the state look to Houston for the best games of the 1946 season. SCORES We They Woodrow Wilson 21 6 Robert E. Sam Houston, San Jacinto, and Jeff Davis were also “loaded” this season, and the other three district foes were nobody's pushover; so with a team that might well have copped the city crown in other years, the Blue and Gold found themselves all nestled up in fourth place when the firing was over, fol- lowing Sam Houston, San Jacinto, and Davis in that order. The city champion Tigers went on to win the bi-district laurels from Beaumont’s Royal Purple, but were eliminated in the first round of the state tournament in Austin by Amarillo. But the season didn't go by without its bright spots for Milby. It marked the first year that the “A” squad was tutored by Coach Lee Beeson, who replaced Bert Kivell. Coach Kivell moved back to take over the reins of the “B” team, and the “B-ers” won the city crown the second for the Buffs in as many years. So when the next hardwoods season rolls around, Coach Beeson should have some outstanding material to work with for the varsity. Coach Beeson's boys didn’t go through the season without their moments, either. Milby advanced to the semi-finals of the Conroe tournament, the finals of the Houston Jaycee tourney, and then went all the way in the Huntsville meet. Up at Huntsville, the Herd took top honors by walloping New Waverly, Centerville, Hunts- ville, and then turned back Davis and Sam Houston. The wins over Davis and Sam Houston marked the only time during the year that the Buffs scored victories over these two Houston fives. And then there was Billy Flanagan, the sharp-shooting Milby forward, who turned up as the city’s top scorer. Flanagan was also picked on the mythical all-city team. So Milby didn’t do so bad in basketball during '47; a “B” team championship, a first rate “A” squad, and enough potentialities for 1948 to make the fans out our way look to the future in promise of fine times to come.
