LAMBDA SIGMA ALPHA Albert Kyser, David Wilcox Charlie Marchand, Henry Burton, Alvin Wright, June Stokes, Mary Janes, Carolyn Bond, Evelyn James tSSk ART CLASS AT WORK DISTRIBUTIVE EDUCATION CLASS HIGH I REGISTRATION JUST A GANG AND A FORD HISTORY OF THE MILBY CO-ED CADETTES A worthwhile organization is an indication of true school spirit. We honor the Milby Co-ed Cadettes for snappy, colorful drills at football games, public performances for charity, and the standards of discipline and honorable conduct for which they stand. In 1926 Mrs. Davis organized the first pep squad of Milby. A few years later, Mr. Glen Stan- baugh and Major George Bronson organized a pep squad of both girls and boys. Just imagine!! The boys wore sateen shirts with one side gold and the other blue. Some class, huh? From 1932 to 1937 the girls were sponsored by Mrs. Lily Ingram. Our dean, Mrs. M. D. McLen- don, Mrs. Fannie Davis, and Miss Avis Bailey, were on the committee to select the name and first uniforms for the pep squad. They chose the name Milby Coed Cadettes. They decided upon military uniforms of blue coats, white skirts, and white oxfords. During this period the Coed Cadettes Booster Club was organized. The officers were: F. B. Lane, President; R. E. Cole, Vice President; G. R. Mad- dox, Secretary-treasurer; J. H. Padon, Drum In- structor; E. H. La Mair, Bugle Instructor; Mrs. Lily Ingram, Cadette sponsor. By then the Coeds had grown from 30 to 130. Mr. Padon and Mr. La Mair helped Mrs. Ingram organize and instruct the first drum and bugle corps in about 1933. Mr. Padon worked with the drummers for three years. Mr. La Mair instructed the buglers until 1942, when he volunteered for service in the navy. The very first bugles were small brass bugles with no valves. This group helped the girls raise $1500 to buy instruments. Mr. Padon's daughter, Gene, was the first mascot and held this office for three years. Since then, the Coeds have grown to 162 in number. The Coeds own 35 bugles, 20 drums, 4 lyres, silk flags, 3 lighted batons, bugle cases, drum cases, and about 100 uniforms which belong to the organization. The Coeds are now divided into the flag and batan corps, drum and bugle corps, and two companies of the drill squad. It has always been difficult for the Coeds to raise enough money to buy new equipment and have the old repaired. They must give dances, minstrels, programs, and ether entertainments to raise the required amount of money. From 1937 to 1940 the Coeds were sponsored by Miss Miriam Gerling, Mrs. Ruth Oakes, and Mrs. Paul McRoy. In 1940 it was decided that the Coeds should have a different uniform. The present uniform, copied after the French Foreign Legion, was decided upon. The uniforms have blue skirts, white coats, white capes lined with blue, and white boots, blue hats with white plumes, and brass Milby insignias. Miss Hazel Cox sponsored the girls from 1940 to 1942. Since 1942, Miss Mildred McGregor has come smiling through with the Coeds. The following named girls have had the honor of being Coed Majors: 1935-36, Mamie Ruth Shook 1937- 38, Letha Cunningham 1938- 39, Mavis Butzke 1939- 40, Marie Turnham 1940- 41, Mable Tissue 1941- 42, Nellie Shurtleff 1942- 44, Frances Johnson 1944- 45, Betty Bain 1945- 46, Georgia Ruth Scarborough Coed Mascots have been: 1940-43, Jo Anne Morgan 1944-45, Jennie Frankie 1 945-46, Penne Cottingham The present commissioned officers of the Coeds are as follows: Major: Georgia Ruth Scarborough Captain of Flags and Batons: Delores Thorton Captain of Drums and Bugle Corps: Virginia Sheppard Captain of Drill: Irma Dobbs Lieutenant of Flags and Batons: Lenora Belle Davis Lieutenant of Drums: Norma Jean Prescott • Lieutenant of Bugle Corps: Barbara Nell Bart- lett Lieutenant of Co. On that night the Bisons breezed through the South Park Greenies, 18-6, to record the first opening game by the Buffs in ten years. The play of Griffin, Bryan, Hartsfield, Pringle, and the Buff forward wall gave promise of what was to come later in the season. The following week Milby swamped the Bull- dogs from Kilgore, 27-0, in Kilgore. After the Kilgore encounter the Blue and Gold opened their home season against San Antonio Tech. The Bulldogs from San Antonio, boasting one of the largest lines in the state, were behind for keeps twenty seconds after the opening kick- off. Bill Hartsfield gathered in the kick-off on the 18-yard line, and galloped 82 yards to pay dirt. Bryan's conversion put Milby in front, 7-0, and before the game was over, the Herd had tacked on 12 more points, to emerge a 19-0 victor. Milby opened their bid for their first district title with a decisive 33-0 victory over the helpless Tigers of Sam Houston. The Buff attack was led by fancy-stepping Jug Griffin, who plowed into the end zone three times. Jeff Davis' Panthers were riding a crest of three straight victories when they met the Buffs, but the North Siders went down in defeat, 20-7, before the on-rushing Bisons. Bryan scored once, and Griffin accounted for the other two by run- ning one over and passing to English for the other. The Herd slipped by the San Jacinto Golden Bears, 7-6, in what was probably the most thrill- ing game of the season. The next encounter was with the air-minded Reagan Bulldogs. The T-Model Canines matched the Milby touchdown for touchdown, but failed to cash in on the extra points as Milby did, and the Buffs came out on top, 14-12. The following week was a big one for all Milby. The Buffs triumphed over the Green and White of Austin, 39-6, to clinch the city championship. Milby took time from the city race to play the Gladewater Bears in Gladewater, trouncing the Bears 44-0. The Lamar Redskins offered Milby plenty of competition on the last regularly scheduled game of the season, but the Bison power ruled, with Milby toppling the Indians, 26-19. After that, the Buffs readied for the Ganders of R. E. Lee High School and the Bi-District tussle at High School Stadium on December 8. The Gan- ders went into the game the favorite, and the Tri-Cities high proved why they were the first time they got possession of the ball. The game ended with Goose Creek on top, 14-6. Milby's lone tally came as a result of the blocked Lee punt, re- covered by Anglin on the Lee 19. A couple of plays later, Hartsfield scored around left end after taking a hand-off from Griffin. The Blue and Gold of Milby now rests at the top of the city gridiron powers, and the Buffalo foot- ball teams of the future will have something to live up to, the 1945 Milby Buffaloes. FANNIE DAVIS This page of our 1946 Annual is set aside as a tribute to one of our beloved teachers, Mrs. Fannie Davis. She was the first of our faculty to come to Harrisburg High School and the first one to retire as a result of long and continued service in the teaching profession. Having reached the age of forced retirement, she will gracefully bow to the inevitable and automatically be placed with the State Teacher Retirement group, where many of her co-workers of the Houston schools have preceded her. Literally thousands of voices speak out of glowing tribute to this faithful worker and friend of this community and of the public schools, an institution to and for which she has dedicated the very best of her life, love, and devotion. Mrs. Davis has always been a tireless worker in all the activities of the school, a most loyal friend of the Milby athletic program, and sponsor of many literary and editorial ventures of the school. Her very heart was in the school and in those members of the school, whether pupil, teacher, maid, or custodian. First in the heart of Mrs. Davis is Milby, and first in the heart of Milby is Mrs. Davis. The present faculty and student body, reinforced by all those gone before, rise up and call her blessed. Her life has been an open book of service and devotion to the cause of education. Long live Mrs. Davis! The staff relaxes after a hard year's work. We hope you like our book. BARBARA BARTLETT We can compete, if we will, in the world markets with the goods produced under the semi-slavery of dictators. We can keep aggressors from our shores. But we can do it only if we develop discipline; not the discipline imposed by a dic- tator, but the self-discipline of democracy. That means willingness to do irksome tasks well and cheerfully. It means thrift, not to amass fortunes, but to acquire stakes in productive enterprise with the consequent diffusion of domestic pur- chasing power. We must bring about greater efficiency. Our young people must not continue to step onto the threshold of life in a haphazard, hit and miss gamble with destiny expecting luck or accident to provide a place in which they may fit. They must be trained with a purpose. They must be taught self-discipline. They must learn to enjoy work and exult in great achievement.
