October 18, 1940 My dear Mias Chamblee: I wish to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated October fifteenth and to thank you for your courtesy In informing me of the plana of the Charles H. Mllby High School to adopt Hemisphere Defense as the theme for its year book. As of possible interest and for such use as you may desire, I take pleasure In quoting below an excerpt from my speech to the Second Meeting of the Foreign Ministers or their Representatives of the American Republica at Habana on July 26, 1940: “By helping each other, by carrying out with vigor, determination and loyalty whatever deci- sions are reached, the American nations can build a system of economic defense that will enable each of them to safeguard itself from the dangers of economic subordination from abroad and of economic distress at home. Sincerely yours. U Mias Maurice Chamblee, Charles H. Mllby School, 1601 Broadway, Houston, Texas, TABLE OF CONTENTS Tabla de Materias I. ADMINISTRATION Administracion II. HUMOR Los Chistes FOREWORD JO ALLECE BRANCH and HARLEY WEBB represented Milby in the Houston Rotary Club contest for sending two high school students as emissaries to Latin-America in June, 1941 We, the staff of the 1941 BUFFALO, have tried to bring to Milby students some of the highlights of this school year and at the same time to record our ideas of the extreme importance of friendship between ourselves and our Latin-American neighbors. With this feeling dominating our national life, we have chosen Pan-Americanism as our theme. We sincerely hope this book will recall in years to come the joys and woes of our high school days and meanwhile be of some aid in cementing democratic unity in the Western Hemisphere. Today we realize more than ever what a privilege it is to live under the torch of Liberty. The United States of America has kept this torch burn- ing brightly by establishing public schools and colleges for the education of all. The National Government helps the poor to become educated by provid- ing part-time jobs in order for them to complete their education. Education is the foundation of Democracy; our privilege it is to strive for a 100 per cent enlightened nation. .- ADMINISTRATION ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF EDUCATION OF HOUSTON INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Left to Right: Holger Jeppesen; Miss Madera, Secretary; E. Its longest period free from strife was from 1880 to 1892, twelve years, under Guzman Blanco. Due to these internal quarrels, which have kept it undeveloped, it has been a struggle to enforce education throughout the country. Since 1921, however, when a law was passed which made primary education free and compulsory, it has become more general. Now there are a number of schools and colleges established in this coun- try of beautiful cloud-topped moun- tains and the future for an enlight- ened people is bright. Panama was a part of Co- lombia for eighty-two years, from 1821 to November 3, 1903. Primary education is compulsory for all children between the ages of seven and fifteen. The completion of the full six-year primary course and an exam- ination are required for admission to secondary schools. Panama has many institutes of higher learning. Among them are the National Institute and National Uni- versity, which were created in 1935. CLASS OF ’42 ADAMS. D. ADAMS. R. ALDERSON. V. ALEXANDER. K. BASS. K. BAUER. B. BECK. E. BECKERS, N. No month is free from rain, but the temperature does not materially differ from that of Florida. Columbus discovered the island in 1492 and said it was the most beau- tiful land that eyes ever beheld. On December 28, 1898, the United States formally took the island over. Cuba, which was formerly a Spanish possession, was then declared free, and to this end the United States es- tablished municipal government and schools, and formed a constitution by which the Republic of Cuba was es- tablished. The fiesta has been a national in- stitution since 1515, when Juan de Solis, the first white man to set foot on the soil of what is now Argentina, navigated the Rio de la Plata. These fiestas, which often last three or four days, do not retard the com- mercial interests of the country. It is thirty times as long as it is wide. The sea coast on the west and the mountain range on the east afford a healthy climate. Chile, which formerly belonged to the Incas of Peru, is a republic, and consists of twenty-three provinces and one territory. The state maintains a system of public schools. There are also several normal schools for men and women, schools of mining, private secondary schools, agricultural and other special schools. A sig- nificant term throughout Mexico—one that would cause the laziest peon to perk up his ears, one that would cause the languid loiterers in the nearby sa- loon to become alive with bustle and activity. The bull fights are held in stadiums much the same as our ball parks, where thousands turn out to see the bloody slaughter of some six bulls turned into a thing of grace and skill by the gallant matadors. MILBY SPORTS CALENDAR FOOTBALL A much underrated Ft. Worth team, paced by Willis Roberts, eked out a 6-0 victory over a green Buff team. The game was played in. St. Thomas Stadium on September 20, 1940. On September 27, the Bison journeyed to Pt. Arthur to get a 32-0 whitewashing. Alvarez was standout of the potent Yellowjacket attack. Captain Mike Jones suffered a fractured rib. In Milby's District opener, Lamar's rampaging Redskins took the Buffaloes into camp by an 18-0 count. J. B. Fooshee and Borneman engineered the Indian's attack. The Austin Mustangs stampeded a luckless Bison eleven to the tune of a 20-0 score. Madeley and Wasek supplied the needed punch for a Pony win. The powerful Davis Panthers rolled the Buffs further into the sod by a convincing 31-0. Captain Mike Jones returned to the Buff line-up. The Buffs showed some signs of life against San Jacinto by scoring on a pass from Bob Waterman to Bershal Anderson. However the Bruins won 13-6. Sam Houston's mighty Tigers romped over the Buffs in a 26-0 fashion. Ralph Porter was a one-man show for the Bengals. The Buffs closed one of the Harrisburg school's most fruitless seasons as Reagan won by 19-0 in a slow game. If you can type, if you can write shorthand, if you can keep books, you will get the job. But if your preparation is limited to the general edu- cation of the high school and the uni- versity, you still need something more that you can trade for a semi-monthly salary check. This is a business world. You will not fit into it until you have had business training. It is, therefore, important to you that you learn now what you are sure to need when you seek a job; not just any job, but a position that will lead to something in keeping with the time and effort you have invested in your education. The quickest, surest and least expensive way to such a position is through a course in Massey Busi- ness College. Massey guarantees satisfaction or your money refunded.
