M ss W ' re Alt ST Afet M The 1968 Warhorse PRESENTED BY THE ANNUAL STAFF OF CHARLES D. OWEN HIGH SCHOOL SWANNANOA, NORTH CAROLINA VOL UME XI Foreword Time is something all people have and spend, yet never own, see, or really understand. It is an intangible concept; a simple progression of events which, once lost, can never be regained. Time comprises the past, present, and future. It is infinite but can easily be divided into measurable segments. Our recollections of these small segments of time are our closest link to the past; they are our memories. Even though time will progress and leave the past far behind, the memories of our years at Owen will form a timeless memorial to some of the best years of our lives. We are always complaining that our days are few, and acting as though there would be no end to them. - Seneca Table of Contents ACADEMICS 10 ORGANIZATIONS 27 SPORTS 53 HONORS 69 PEOPLE 87 SENIOR STATISTICS 136 3 Years At Owen • • • A Time 4 1 For Everything 5 Dedicated • • • In appreciation of his time and talents as band and chorus director, and his unselfish concern for the welfare of our school itself, the Senior Class gratefully dedicates the 1968 Warhorse to our assistant principal, Mr. Richard Hipps. 7 Alma Mater Owen High, We’re ever loyal to Thee, Owen High, We will be true. Our Alma Mater be ever cherished By all our sons and daughters too. We’ll sing Thy praises; We’ll cheer Thee onward bravely, Glad for each victory won. Oh, school forever glorious, All hail to Thee, oh Owen High. 8 10 ?I§gjnH| V: Academics 11 IP 1 Geometric proofs require exacting work. Students Are The fascinating world of mathematics came alive for many students as they grasped new concepts in Algebra, Geometry, or Advanced Math. Owen offers a math curriculum to fit the needs of every student. Commercial students, anxious to enter the business world, are offered a practical program of Business Math, while college bound students follow preparatory courses in Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced Math. These more advanced courses develop a firm basis for the students who plan to go on to college. Many individual problems are explained in the last five minutes of a period. 12 Offered A Broad Mathematics Program Careful explanation of procedure is the first step in any math course. Examples of geometric construction. 13 The Science Department Progresses Physics involves much math work; a slide rule can cut computation time to almost nothing. Work must equal force x distance! 14 To Introduce PS SC Physics Tremendous amounts of interest are generated whenever a student opens one of the doors of science. Through Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, students gain an understanding of many of the technical complexities of life. From the simple amoeba to the study of intricate body functions, the anatomy of life is viewed by sophomore Biology students. Chemistry students become interested mainly in the “how” and “why” of nonliving things. Physics students begin the study of the relation¬ ships of heat, light, and force as they affect our everyday life. Orderly procedure usually leads to a successful experiment. can be tougher than it looks. 15 The Mastery and Mystery of Foreign Languages And while Rome burned . . . Freight train to Paris Often a greater appreciation of English can be aroused from study of foreign languages. The two year courses in French and Latin offered at Owen not only give the student a working knowledge of the language itself, but also introduce him to the culture and customs of other countries. There’s a certain amount of uncertainty in everything. 16 I “Repent!” “This senior English is really fun!” Faster, more accurate reading and concentrated studies of composition and literature were primary goals for this year’s English classes. While some students were battling with parts of speech, sentence structure, and vocabu¬ lary, others were delving into the study of novels, plays, poetry, essays, and other literature. Study in reading, writing, listening, and speaking was found to be the key to effective communication while developing keen insight in every student. “Man, Shakespeare must have been a real swinger! Intrigue! With the Surprising Complexities of English 17 Goals in Sight, Future Homemakers and “But the button won’t even work without a hole.” Which way to cut... Today’s Home Economics students will be the home¬ makers of the next generation. They must be able to sew, cook, care for children, and handle home finances. Proof of their proficiency often floats through the Home Ec. doors as aromas of baking pies and cooking meals. 18 Pm going to use a green one! Mechanics Develop Essential Skills Agriculture students gave Owen a new attraction this year with the completion of a greenhouse for horticultural studies. Agriculture students study everything from farm machinery to wood working, but prepare mainly for vocations related to agriculture. Just a “planed” old board. Craftsmanship gained through experience. Chef and maitre d’hotel. Pride of O.H.S. 19 The Varied Subjects of Social Studies “Let’s try to talk him out of the test.” No, I’m not putting you on! I can spin right through World Geography. 20 Offer Something of Interest to All The study of the world, its people, and their problems in past as well as bn present times, ranks Social Studies among Owen’s most interesting and meaningful courses. Students provided with a good background in Social Studies are more prepared to understand and cope with the problems and responsibilities of later life. They know the basic principles on which our government was founded and are able to evaluate our economic and democratic systems by comparison to the systems of other nations. I The more you learn, the less you know. 21 Preparation for Future Business Jobs . . . “If I were you . . Well, it does say Kxyltzyos! Business would seem to be undergoing a trend toward auto¬ mation, but aside from the clacking typewriters and whirring adding and mimeograph machines many students get rigorous training in shorthand, bookkeeping, and general business. Owen’s commercial students are well prepared to enter the business world, although many find their acquired skills inval¬ uable in school and college work. Dictation-Transcription, all we ever hear! 22 Hey! who kicked the hole in my drum! Under the direction of Mr. Hipps. Owen’s band and chorus members have gained an excellent and working knowledge of music. They learn everything from the basic fundamentals to the final pol¬ ishes of perfection, and, most important, are given the opportunity to demonstrate their ability as musicians before audiences at football games, assemblies, and concerts. Let’s hear it now sopranos! Up, up and away. T. G. Wana Brass T-formation And Special Training in a Pi •ecise Medium. 23 Healthier Bodies Through P.E. Knowing that a curious mind cannot function properly without a sound body, Owen’s coaches strive to teach teamwork and sportsman¬ ship while developing physical strength, endurance, and co-ordination. Along with physical training, freshmen receive basics in classroom health education. Calisthenics first . . . Shotgun LeVine strikes again. Games later. 24 D.E. Conveys Important Business Training Students Unravel the Education Wholesale! Students anxious to get into business immediately after graduation find Distributive Education to be an excellent preparatory course. In striving to promote business knowledge and skill, D.E. includes training in wholesale, retail, and service dis¬ tribution. Operation of Gears Few people care to wait until they are eighteen before being allowed to drive a car. Driver Education, with its thirty hours of classroom train¬ ing, and six hours of behind the wheel experience, makes it possible to obtain a driver’s license at sixteen. Lowering of the minimum age is more than offset by the improvement in a driver ' s ability and attitude as a result of this special training. Nerves of steel! Younger but safer drivers is North Carolina’s goal. L.S. Students Keep Orderly Shelves 11 Running an efficient library, and keeping books in proper order, is a big job for library assistants. Under the watchful eye of Mrs. Carr, stu¬ dents learn procedures for checking, shelving, and cataloging books on many various yet specific subjects. All books are cataloged and shelved in specific order. As busy as the guidance office is, it would seem that Owen is a school full of very uncertain students, but considering the confusion over class scheduling, tests, scholarships, and college entrance exams, we see the importance of our guidance counselors. Miss Hanlon and Mrs. Conger are always ready to give answers and advise to the many varied questions of students. Check-out and check-in are the most common procedures. Student problems are counselor problems. Line of doubt. The Never-Ending Questions 26 I i A Time For Fellowship . . . o r g a n i z a t i o n s 27 Jerry, Patty, and Keith are busy working on posters for the District Beta Club meeting. Carousels Club Members of the Carousels Club participate in a series of one act plays presented to the student body during the school year. These plays vary from serious dramas to humorous comedies. Each spring, the Carousels Club takes great pride in presenting its annual spring play to the invited public. 34 35 ••I Jt - A Library Assistants Keeping a library in running order is a tremendous job. Help¬ ing Mrs. Carr do this are a number of qualified student Library Assistants. These students check books in and out, shelve books, file cards in the card catalogue, and mend books. Can I help you find . . . 36 FFA A recap of the FFA’s accomplish¬ ments this year shows that they have done more jobs than any other club. They painted the bleachers in the gym and on the football field, built the green¬ house, and painted the flagpole. They placed tirst in both public speaking and parliamentary procedure in district meets. This year, they have achieved many of their goals. OFFICERS (1. to r.): Jeff Morris, Reporter; Sam Mundy, President; Benny Hall, Treasurer- and Oary Cody, Secretary. Bobby McMurray, Sentinel, is not pictured. 37 Volunteers and Health Careers Club For two hours each week, these volunteer workers go to local hospitals to give their assistance to the nurses. Some of their duties include talking to the patients, feeding them, and writing letters for those who are not able to do it for themselves. This act shows the true interest these students have in helping others. Members of the Health Careers Club are interested in various fields of medi¬ cine. They broaden their knowledge by the different films and books presented at the meetings. Occasionally, a professional in a specific field will speak at the meetings. Tours of hospitals and clinics highlighted the activities of this year. Barbara Blizzard, Vice President; Shirly Silvers, President Elect; Sheila Cody, President; Debbie McMeans, Reporter; Betty Love, Secretary; and not pictured Judy Benedict, Treasurer. 38 FHA The Future Homemakers of America Club prepares its members for their fu¬ ture lives in the home. The members of the club enjoy meeting with other girls at their county and state conventions and sharing ideas. This year, knowledge of French gained in the class¬ room has been utilized in skits, games, and quizzes, all presented in French. OFFICERS (1. to r.): Vincent Greene, Vice President; Sheila Cody, Reporter; Betty Lo gan, Treasurer; Vickie Crotts, Secretary; Mike Gladwin, President. 40 The aim of the Junior Classical League is to create interest in the Rom¬ an culture and the civilization that forms the basis for much of modern society. One of the highlights of the year is the Roman Banquet during which the Latin costumes are displayed. The club annually has good representation at the national convention and the state convention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Last summer, the Owen chapter received national recognition in costume design. Owen students have held three state offices in the last five years. Officers of the J.C.L. are: Georgena Millar, Historian, Sheila Cody, Quaestor; Virginia Taylor, Censor; Steve Gladwin, Consul; and Hayden Clark, Aedile. 41 Chess Club Speech Club The Chess Club, organized only last year, is making its first mark in the school. Its original purpose was to provide organ¬ ized, regular meetings for those people who played chess and needed practice to improve their game. The club now also exists to introduce the game to newcomers and to teach proper techniques to all members. The newest club at Owen is the Speech Club which was only organized this year. At the weekly meetings, members are given the chance to express their views on contemporary sub¬ jects in both planned and extemporaneous speeches. If interest increases, the Owen Speech Club may form the basis for a chapter of the National Forensic League. 42 Guidance Representatives Coachmen These students who work closely with Miss Hanlon render a valuable service to our student body. VX 139 We lived With hearts that ran And hands that dreamed. . . And clocks that had no hands. Another year has passed, but its events w ill never be forgotten. They have been recorded in the memories of every stu¬ dent who has been at Owen. As veteran seniors step down, uninitiated freshmen arrive. We, who are leaving, will remember Owen as it was, but for those who arrive, Owen must change to accommodate new strengths and weaknesses. A school’s character is that of its students — its people. Over a period of years people change, their interests vary, they set new and higher goals, and they find time for additional activities. Owen has changed in the past - it will undoubtedly change in the future. Opportunities will come, go, and return, and years at Owen will continue to offer a time for everything.
