Owen High School is a set,and we are the ele¬ ments winch constitute it. The nature of each of us IS different, and our arrangement and number is continually changing. If one of us were miss¬ ing, the set would be incomplete. Even though human behavior cannot be ration¬ alized as readily as mathematics can be, a parallel can be drawn between the two. As each element plays an important part in its particular set, so does each person play an important part in our school. We hope that you view the 1967 WARHORSE with this in mind and that the year 1966-67 has a greater meaning for you. Introduction Classes Clubs Features Administrative Staff Sports Honors Senior Statistics Owen High, We ' re ever loyal to Thee, Owen High, We will be true. Our Alma Mater be ever cherished By all our sons and daughters too. We ' ll sing Thy praises; We ' ll cheer Thee onward bravely. Glad for each victory won. Oh, school forever glorious. The Commercialairs from the 1966 BUBBLE When it rains it pours TROUBLE than the Sum of its Parts.” The 1966 Warhorse Dedication Mr. Paul E. Johnson is uniquely symbolic of Owen High School, faculty and students alike. He shows this by his outstanding school spirit and his friendly attitude. Mr. Johnson is unique because of the special interest that makes learning an enjoyable process. The Seniors are proud to dedicate the 1967 WARHORSE to Mr. Johnson. This is our way of expressing our gratitude to him for helping us through our most important year. We will remember Mr. Johnson as more than ateacher, for he is also a friend. Mr. N. C. Shuford, first principal of Owen High School, served from 1955 to 1960. As a result of his foresight and careful planning, he was able to bring about the consolidation of Black Mounta in and Swannanoa High Schools. Mr. Shuford is still a resident of our commu¬ nity and takes an active part in its affairs. Between the years 1960 and 1966 Mr. Fred H. Martin served as principal of Owen High School. Much of his time and talents were spent in obtaining our membership in the Southern Association of Secondary Schools. We are much indebted to Mr. Martin for this and other actions he has taken for the advance¬ ment of our school and community. Mr. Charles A. Lytle PRINCIPAL Mr. T. C. Roberson The schools of Buncombe County are operated and reg¬ ulated under the direction of Mr. T. C. Roberson, county superintendent. Mr. Roberson cooperates with the county administration and our principal and faculty to reach deci¬ sions that will benefit the students. Ralph Smith Swannanoa Elementary J. W. Owen Black Mountain Elementary L. T. It is the English department ' s goal to teach us to communicate well, for no matter what we choose to do after we graduate, English will remain important to our success. Students are taught effective communication through four areas; reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These branch out to include such things as grammar, mechanics, and literature. This year the English department conducted a six-weeks concentrated study of reading with the help of the SHA Reading Laboratory. The positive results of this concentrated reading program showed themselves in the stu¬ dent ' s standardized test scores. Mrs. Barbara Harrell Mrs. Doris Fisher Mrs. Margaret McLarty Mrs. Martha Perley, Head Mrs. Melba Stafford 19 Mrs. Mary Tallent Science Mrs. Francis Davis In the laboratories and classes of the sci¬ ence department, students are able to Study the many facets of scientific knowledge through phys¬ ical science, biology, chemistry, and physics. Since the study of living things is important to a better understanding of ourselves, all sooh- omores are required to take biology. Mr. Robert Sluder Mr. Gary Carson Mr. John May, Head Miss Clara McCall Agriculture And Home Economics Agriculture prepares boys for vocations related to that subject. In this course students learn agricultural occupation, science and mechanics. They also learn about horticulture, farm machinery and equipment, and the basic principles of shop. Home Economics prepares girls for their future roles as wives and mothers. Through Home Economics, students have an opportunity to learn cookiiig and sewing principles, child care, interior decorating, and household economics. Miss Vera Price 20 Social Studies Mr. Ronald Brooks Mr. Paul Moore Mrs. Faye Bell The history department is intent on preparing students for their role as citizens of tomorrow. Through economics and sociology, world geography, U. S. history, world history, and civics, students learn more about what will be expected of them in keeping their heritage. Miss Rochelle Runyon Mr. Howard Bridges Business Commercial students at Owen are thoroughly prepared to enter the business world. A student who is taking a full business curriculum undergoes a rigorous program of typing, shorthand, bookkeep¬ ing, and general business. Along with this they gain knowledge of how to use efficiently modern office equipment through office practice. I I Mr. Paul Johnson Miss Nancy Wrenn, Head Miss Janice Murphy, Head Mr. Sterlyn Washburn 21 Foreign Language A two year program is offered to students taking Latin and French. Along with oral and written comprehension of the two languages, the French and Latin students are also taught the culture and customs of Rome and France. Miss Elizabeth Cole Mrs. Mary Freeman Mr. Richard Hipps Music The band and chorus provide students with the discipline that comes from a knowl¬ edge of music ' s funda¬ mentals. Under the direction of Mr. Hipps, both of these groups present a Christmas and Spring Concert. They also enter many other events which give them an oppor¬ tunity to perform in front of an audience. Mr. Glenn Maynard Distributive Education Distributive educa¬ tion prepares students for a career immedi¬ ately after graduation. It strives to promote business knowledge and skill, and includes training in retail, wholesale, and service distribution. Mrs. Patsy Woodcock Mr. James LeVine Physical Education Since keeping the body physically fit is as important as keeping the mind mentally stimu¬ lated, all freshmen are required to take physical education. Through physical education they learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports along with the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. 22 Mathematics The mathematics department has a curriculum that fits the needs of any high school student. Business math is offered to the commercial stu¬ dents who wish to enter the business world directly after graduation. College preparatory students follow the courses of Algebra One and Two, geometry, and advanced math. These courses prepare the stu¬ dents who wish to go on to college. Mrs, Gene Cantrell Mrs. Janice Capps 4 Mr. June Pratt Mr. Sam Whiteside Mr. Jimmy Lewis Driver Education Driver education students must spend a mini¬ mum of 30 hours in the classroom and 6 hours behind the wheel. Most students take driver edu¬ cation right before or when they reach sixteen, since driver education is a prerequisite for obtain¬ ing a driver ' s license before the age of eighteen. Mr. J. T. Davis Mr. William Rucker 23 Library A quiet, studious at¬ mosphere stimulates reading, studying, and research in the library. Because of the rapid expansion of our library, Mrs. Celley’s services have been added to help Mrs. Carr. Mrs, Margaret Carr Teacher Aid Mr. Lytle helps to take the overflow of work from the history teachers by composing, typing and grading tests. He has proven to be a valuable help in this department. Secretary Mrs. Lewis, the school secretary, takes care of the regular office routine. She has proved her efficiency by typing up reports, taking care of files and a number of other jobs that require a thorough knowledge of office practice. Mr. Webster Lytle Mrs. Margaret Lewis Miss Joan Hanlon Guidance Miss Hanlon is al¬ ways available to advise students on matters concerning courses, scholarships, tests, and colleges. This year it has been necessary to add Mrs. Settle to the guidance office to take care of the overflow of students seeking aid. I see. The members render serv¬ ice to the student body. Requirements for membership in the Beta Club are solely qualitative. Members must have a ninety or above average and be ap¬ proved by faculty, Beta Club officers and our principal. 74 Initiation, slaves, conjugation, Ulys¬ ses, Latin Forum—all are familiar words to the members of the Junior Classical League. This club is estab¬ lished to promote student interest in the classical heritage of the Graeco- Roman civilization. In addition to interesting club pro¬ grams, an annual banquet is held in the spring. In March, members, accom¬ panied by their advisors, attend the State Junior Classical League Conven¬ tion at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. One or two of the mem¬ bers generally attend the National Con¬ vention held each summer. ' T will learn the art of helping others by doing helpful things daily in school . . . I will make my influence count on the side of right.” Through club programs and member activities this motto comes true. Having a member as County President and attending the state convention are high¬ lights of this year. 77 Photo Club Officers: Tom Crabtree, President; Mr. May, Sponsor; Alan Eberhart, Sec¬ retary; Mary Benedict, Vice President; Pat Lackey, Treasurer. Throughout the year many have seen the members of this club at work. They are constantly striving to capture the true spirit of Owen in their photographs. Special recognition should be given to this club because through their efforts we are able to see ourselves in the classroom and in extracurricular ac¬ tivities. Many of their photographs have been published in this annual and other publications. 78 Each year members of the FFA have an opportunity to enter six dif¬ ferent contests; shop, ritual on parlia¬ mentary procedure, public speaking, land judging, beef judging, and dairy judging. These contests begin with the local district and lead up to the national level. Also, every summer several boys have the opportunity to go to White Lake for the FFA camp. FFA attempts to develop agricul¬ ture leadership, cooperation, and citi¬ zenship. Evidence that our local club is accomplishing this can be seen in the improvements they have made around our own school. Not only do the actors gain experience on stage, but the peo¬ ple behind the scene s doing scenery, prompting, or just helping out can de¬ velop potential talent and everyone is given an opportunity to develop self- expression and poise. 82 Through listening to inspiring talks by people of the medical profession, these students learn more about the various fields of medicine. Films and books supplement interest and initiate the desire to learn more about medi¬ cine. Touring the Orthopedic Hospital in Asheville was only one of the high¬ lights of the year. Pro¬ grams are especially planned to initiate interest in the affairs of the home of today and encourage the members to strive for a pleasant atmosphere when they have a home of their own. After football season, the marching band becomes a concert group. They spend many hours practicing for two concerts, one at Christmas and the other in the Spring. They participated in the Southeast¬ ern Band Festival and brought back an excellent rating. They also performed at Western Carolina College and in the Asheville Christmas Parade. Many are never able to say that they have achieved greatness. The Owen Warlassies are able to say this and be justly proud. Through hard work and undying desire, they set about to prove that they would not play second to anyone. To the seniors who are leaving, you have been tops, not only in the game of basketball, but in the game of life as well. If you continue through the future with the same burning desire to be the best in everything you undertake, you will never come out second. To the girls who are left behind to carry on the great tradition set down over the past four years, let me say that every time you go on the floor you will be trying to continue to be the best, and like me, will always be proud and grateful to those who have worn the maroon and white ahead of you. It has been a privilege to coach and be associated with these fine yoUng ladies. These students are chosen by the members of the faculty for outstanding contributions they have made to school and comm¬ unity. Editor’s Farewell There are several important factors that are a part of Owen High School. We have shown you some of the main ones: administration, classes, clubs, sports, and features. Each of these parts constitute a whole within itself, and each of these wholes is again made of parts. These parts are we ourselves, for it is we who make up Owen High School. As graduating seniors we will no longer be a part of this school. The classes, proms, club meetings will all be just memories. We will separate and each will go his way. We will no longer belong to Owen High. Yet Owen will always be a part of us. Just as our school is made up of classes and clubs, classes and clubs are made up of individuals. These individuals are also made up of several parts. Owen High School will always be a vital part of each of us, for here, with the help of our friends and teachers, we received the necessary background to meet the new experiences to come. 135 ' ri L ♦ ' ■ ■ ‘ ’; • ■ ■ ' ■ .
