You may have grumbled in the years gone by; but as the book unfolds before your eyes, tears are not far away. You are Poking at your life. The many friends made, the happy hours enjoyed, and the useful knowledge gained, should make this year stand out in the years to come. Remembering it always . . .for this is your life. Your living is determined not so much by what life brings t o you as by the attitude you bring to life; not s o much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what hap¬ pens. Circumstances and situations do color life, but you have been given the mind to choose what the color shall be. John H. Miller 4 4 PICTURES fo ry f s’ , Got to get in shape! Dignified Seniors ? ? ? This is J7, come in Air Tower. All is clear, ready for take off. Our eyes see the space ship ascend with power and ease. Listen-- we can hear the conversation between the occupants of the ship, who we will identify by No. l--the pilot; No. 2--the passenger. 1 I think it ' s a wonderful idea to have our class reunion on the moon! 2 So do I. I surely hope we ' re not late. 1 Don ' t worry, we have plenty of time. 2 It was nice of Frances to give us accommodations at her hotel, The SWANN Saucer. 1 Yes it was. By the way, who is working in the Magic Carpet Plant on the moon? 2 Chris MIMIDIS is president, and Tommy THOMPSON is vice presi¬ dent, and Lynda McGRAW, I know, is treasurer. I bet she keeps them in line 1 Jo Ann ALLEN and Carolyn CALLOWAY are the head secretaries. I know they never thought they would be on the moon in 19 8. 2 I doubt if Barbara CORBIN or Ted HALL thought they ' d be typists there either. Some other classmates from our class work there too, such as Edwin BREEDLOVE, David COOKE, Marie CLARK, Claudia LAW, Phyllis PRUETT, Patricia REED, Jeanette HUDGINS, and others I am sure that I do not recall. 1 I hear they make real good salaries, maybe I could press one for a loan. 2 I am sure most all our classmates are married by now, although I have only heard and read about a few. I noticed in the MOON CHRONI- CLE that David Tyson finally got hitched. I never thought he would do it! 1 The big news on earth was about the movie star, Gloria Brookshire ' s wedding . She even had her pool filled with pink champagne and you might guess who fell in-Freddie ENSLEY ! ! 2 I also heard that Keevie BALLARD has just solved one of her many successful criminal cases, with the help of her private eye--Jackie SMATHERS. She won the case for Joe BLANKENSHIP, who has been charged with stealing new inventions from one of our local scientists, Grady McMAHAN.-Your signal light is blinking, you had better turn on the inter-com. As we pause we can hear a familiar voice over the inter-com-- May I have your attention please ! May I have your attention Please ! This is N. C. Shuford at the Moon Station Z-F. There has been a traffic jam in all channels to the moon. Space ships coming to the moon stay on the right side of the Space Station; those leaving to the left. 1 Oh goodness! I never did understand his directions for traffic in the halls at Owen, much less for the traffic in space. 2 Neither did I. Just watch your driving! I don ' t know if I should trust you or not. But to change the subject abruptly--Ted McCALL is in charge of a big scientific program on the moon. He has gained the title of Profes¬ sor. The KILPATRICK twins are his assistants; they work well togeth¬ er, I am sure. 1 And I heard that Joyce RIDDLE was Ted ' s social adviser; can you beat that? 2 No! I thought surely she would be a school teacher. Evelyn JOHNSON is Ted ' s private secretary. I ' d surely like t o have that job, but no chance of her quitting. Anyway, I have three demons at home that pre¬ vent any outside work. 1 I know what you mean--kids can really tie you down. 2 Can you get a radio broadcast up here? 1 The only station I can get is Z-O-O-M. That disk-jockey, Sherman HYDER, plays disgraceful music! 2 Yes, what are these teenagers coming to? 1 Well, we ' re Here. I ' d better concentrate on landing; my PARKING never was very good. The space ship glides easily downward. Parking was accomplished with no catastrophe. We see our pilot and passenger descend from the ship, properly equipped for habitation on the moon. A moon-mobile awaits the two and its worthy driver is none other than Lawrence HEN¬ DERSON, who inquired their destination. 1 Hi, Lawrence. We want to go to the SWANN Saucer Hotel. Let ' s hurry and freshen up for we have a full schedule ahead of us. The hotel is reached in a few seconds of traveling time, and the bell boys, Jimmy CREASMAN and Terry SWANN, come out to receive the light parcels of the guests. We then follow the pilot and passenger to their rooms and their conversation continues: 1 Did you see Dorothy TOLLEY and Doris SNYPES working in the office down stair s ? Yes, and I also noticed Charles ROLAND is an elevator boy. Looks like our whole class is living on the moon. Personally, I still like earth the be st. 1 Let ' s look at our schedule and see what ' s instore for us this morning. First, there i6 to be a fashion show-- Style s of the Universe given by our great fashion designer Melba RIDDLE, and Business Manager, David BURNETTE. 1 I see her models include some of our classmates: Marjorie McCUEN, Barbara DAVIDSON, Miranda YOUNG, and Patsy SORRELS. The new design in wedding dresses will be modeled by Carolyn MAGNENT, After the style show there is to be a basketball game before lunch. Ruth CLAYTON, Yvonne LUNSFORD, Wanda BARTLETT, Kaye ROBIN - 1 2 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 2 1 SON, Nonie GREENE, Elaine BASTERACHE will be playing with others. I wonder if they play as well together as they did in ' 58? Never can tell. I see on the schedule that the football boys of ' 58 will be the cheerleaders: Leslie HAYNES, Wayne MORROW, Arthur CLAY¬ TON, Albert DAVIS, Robert HUGHES, Billy WIMBERLY and Robert HUDGINS, David PRUETT with Buddy ROGERS as captain. He will never look like Gloria! I bet I know why Eddie HARRIS ' S name isn ' t on the list, he couldn ' t leave his Hiawien beach and girls long enough. The morning progresses. . . .we see the pilot and passenger walk¬ ing into the S W cafeteria for their lunch. Owners J. r rv RHYMER . and his manager, Melvin FARR: the dietitian is Alice STEVENS, and the chief cook. Lea TILLER. As they walk into the building, a few words of greeting are passed between them and old classmates at a nearby table; Betty WILSON, Betty DAVIS, June and Jean SHOOK, and Betty ROLLINS. As they sit eating their lunch slowly and watching others entering the dining room, their conversation resumes. 1 The re ' s Rita DILLINGHAM. She hooked a Bob Jones Man, so I ' ve heard. Look. . .there ' s Emily HOLLIFIELD. She is really wearing a big dia¬ mond this time ! Going back to news on the earth--Ronald SOLESBEE is surely getting into the headlines. He ' s a famous hot rod driver. Speaking of cars, Raymond Williams and John Clements have a good Ford business in my home town. Black Mountain. Did you go to Mary and Shirley Byrd ' s wedding? I read it was some - thing. No, I didn ' t go but I read about it. Betty KITCHEN and Bernice McELRATH are happily married. Each have a set of twins. Brenda PERKINS finally settled down. She declares she is going back into the theater to get away from her children; but you know she won ' t. We see these two hurrying to chapel. They were seated with only enough time to speak to Dennis GLASS and Edward BYAS, chemistry teachers at Owen High School. Here is the program. Devotional reading.Mary Noah Octette . . . .Polly Harris, Mary Martin, Louise Ball, Betty Allen, Bobby Watkins, Harold Hyatt, Bobby Ammons, and Ray Robinson Accompanist.Gary Edwards Poem.Shirley Bell Solo.Judy Gragg Speaker.Rev. Carl Bartlett Benediction. Marvin Moore The time in chapel passed quickly and we find the pilot and pas¬ senger filling the afternoon by reminiscing with many other classmates of 1958 from Owen. A banquetwas to be held at the LUCKADOO HALL owned by Judy LUCKADOO. It is nearly 8:00 p. m. and we see our two friends approaching the building. Look! There is Phylis BURLESON and Mickey CONNER CAMBY. Don ' t they have on lovely gowns? No wonder! They both have prosperous husbands. I got left out on that deal. . .Ha. I see Joan WALKER over there. She finally got her man ' Soft music fills the room and dancers crowd the floor. Joyce PRESSLEY and Evelyn ROBINSON, the hostesses, take the wraps of the other guests entering and flowers are given to each lady--compliments of Charles HARRIS, the famous florist. There is Mary Kay MORGAN and her husband. I wonder how many children they have? You know at one time she wanted to be a child psychologist. No, I didn ' t know that, and I think she has two children. She probably uses psychology at home. Who is standing in the door? I believe that is Wyona HOWIE, Mildred RHODES, and Jo Ann SUR- RETT. Aren ' t they sporting gorgeous mink coats? Goodness yes, 1 declare, it must be nice. The decorations tonight are surely clever. I wonder who did the work 0 ' Why thank you. Charles ROGERS and I, with the help of Martha CAPPS, Geraldine THOMAS, and Jo Ann BYAS I see you are back to your old tricks of being on committees ! The Master of Ceremonies Ted McCall welcomed the Class of 1958 to the moon. Everyone seemed to have had a wonderful time. But who could not have enjoyed this entertainment: The famous Old Fashion Rock Roll Quartet composed of Sheldon Summerlin, Robert Thorpe, Sonny Slagle, and Thomas Dickens. They sang At the Hop. Annette Hall, of course, did her famous dance for them, and the program could not have been complete without a song from Carolyn Pressley, accompanied by Peggy Cooley. Soft music from the wonderful Alan Holcombe Band was heard that night on the moon. Two very tired but happy people left Luckadoo Hall and boarded the Space Ship. It took off slowly; it ' s destination-earth. Jane, thanks so very much for taking me to the reunion. I surely had a grand time. Oh, you know you are welcome, Nana. I enjoyed your company as much now as I did in 1958.
