K(vy t o n J 1 o P r r r n AC A r THE Pr eiente A By SENIOR CLASS OF OWEN HIGH SCHOOL Due to the consolidation, which took place in the middle of the year, we have some pages and pictures which will not be of the same style. For instance, the individual pictures of the Seniors were made differently and therefore will be put in different sections. We have tried to combine all the pages that we possibly could, because of the fact that we are now one school. We are one school and we want one annual. We would like to thank all the advertisers for their co-operation in making this annual possible. The association we have had with them has been a real pleasure. To our beloved teachers, we say, Thanks for your patience with the staff and for your ■ gracious attitude toward making our first Black Swan a success. d ' A • S , ,■ . ■: ' V. . We have laughed with you, talked with you, and learned with you--even as our parents and teachers did before us. Through the years, each of you has worked diligently with the students for the betterment of Swannanoa Valley. We have gained much that was not in books. So, as a small token of our appreciation for the enrichment of our lives, we, the first grad¬ uating class of Owen High School and the staff of the first Black Swan dedicate this yearbook to you. Why twelve years ago of course, when the seniors of 1955 started their readin, writin and rithmetic. Some of the membe r s of the class had the privilege of starting a few years ahead of the others, but they were nice enough to wait onus so that we could all graduate together. Then there are those who want to graduate with the rising Junior Class - so we will leave them behind and hope they have fun next year. Looking back over the past, we find that we have many memories, some of which are happy, some of which are sad, and some we had just rather forget! Written below are some of the memories that we will always remember with much pleasure. (3) To develop a sense of responsibility in school activities. (4) To encourage all worthy school organizations. (5) To advance individual participation in school activities. The newly composed Owen Student Council, formerly the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Council, is proving to be a very successful one. Since the two schools were combined in the middle of the year, it was decided that instead of electing new officers, co-officers will preside at the meetings. The co-officers are the same ones that were elected by the Student bodies of each school last spring. Under the supervision of Mr. Y. L. Medlin the Student Council at Owen High has accomplished much. The club, although not completely organized, is striving to make Owen a better school. The club has adopted several projects since the opening of the new school. As one of their projects they have devotions over the P.A. every morning. Another project is the selling of De¬ cals to the Student Body. We are very proud of our Student Council, and we consider it as one of our most worth-while organizations. We know that when it has had a chance to be completely organized it will be an even better organization than it has proved to be thus far. -U ' -Uw- ' - - ■■ I C k m - IBjHf H j lint ciiib on Swannanoa Black Mountain President.Patty Tyson Secretary-Treasurer . It ' s objectives are: to encourage effort, promote character, stimulate achievement, and to encourage and assist students to continue their education after high school. The purpose of this organization shall be the promotion of the ideals of honesty, service, and leadership among high school students. It ' s sole function is to encourage the student to do his best, and to strive to make himself a real asset to his school and community. At the first of the year we had two separate clubs, due to the fact that the consolidation had not yet taken place. We each had our own projects while working separately. The Black Moun¬ tain Beta Club at Christmas time brought joy to some needy family by preparing a basket of groceries, toys, and clothe s for them. Another project was the Christmas bazaar, which was given in order to pay for the induction service and the dance that was held at Christmas time. The Swannanoa Beta Club devoted their time to baby-sitting for the P. T. A. at their regular meetings every month. Another project was the clean-up campaign. The club awarded a prize to the teacher who kept his room the cleanest. Both clubs have other projects that have not been mentioned that helped to make the schools and clubs something to be proud of. To Mrs. Perley and Mrs. Freeman we say, Thanks for your guidance, patience, and time that you have given to make our clubs more successful. J 5 1 A ■ ii | ■ 1 Jwft. For we are the builders of homes, Homes for America ' s future. Homes where living will be the expression of everything That is good and fair. Homes where truth and love and security and faith Will be realities, not dreams. We are the Future Homemakers of America. We face the future with warm courage, And high hope. Owen High School is proud of it ' s Future Homemakers of America, not only for the large membership it boasts, but because of the fine things it stands for, and what it teaches the girls. Future Homemakers are given many opportunities by their local club as well as the County and State Clubs. Each year rallays are held all over the State giving each girl an opportunity to ex¬ hibit her talents and ability. This year we ' re sure that our club can make a good showing at each of these, because of the way our wonderful sponsors Mrs. Rogers, and Mrs. Nesbitt, have helped us in every situation that we have had to face. .1 F. Swannanoa .Donald Barnwell .Ned Green .Jerry Ballard .David Alexander .Dayton Ponder .David Cook .Mr. Neskaug THE FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA is a non-political, farm youth organization of volun¬ tary membership, designed to take its place along with other agencies striving for the develop¬ ment of leade r ship, the building of a more permanent agriculture, and the improvement of coun¬ try life. It constitutes one of the most efficient agricultural devices that have been discovered up to the present time. Through the activities of this club, the members strive to fulfill these aims by: Learning to -do; Doing to learn; Earning to live; Living to serve. The official colors of the organization are gold and national blue. These colors should be used in connection with all F. F. A. activities where the use of the organization is appropriate. A yellow corn color on a background of medium blue has been found to be an ideal color com¬ bination. The emblem is made up of five symbols--the owl, the plow, and the rising sun, within the cross section of an ear of corn which is surmounted by the American Eagle. Upon the face of the emblem appear also the words Vocational Agriculture and the letters F. F. A. The owl is symbolic of wisdom and knowledge; the plow is the symbol of labor and tillage of the soil; the rising sun is emblematic of progress and the new day that will dawn when all farmers are the product of vocational agricultural schools, and have learned to co-operate; the cross section of an ear of corn is indicative of the national scope of the organization, as is also the American eagle. The em¬ blem is protected by copyright. Accordingly, a temporary constitution patterned very closely after that of the Future Farmers of Virginia was drafted under the leadership of the staff of the Agricultural Education Service of the Federal Board for Vocational Education during the summer of 1928. The first National Convention was held in November of that year and since that time the growth of the Future Farmers of America has been steady and rapid, extending as far as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The organization became a reality due to the co-operative attitude of the various State groups interested in the welfare of American farm youth. The F. F. A. club has indeed enjoyed being under the supervision of Mr. Carson and Mr.Neskaug this year at the separate schools and even more so at Owen. We would like to express our thanks and appreciation for the wonderful work they have done. This make s the fir st championship for Owen High. The boys won 9 games this season and lost only one to Lee Edwards. The team has a good record in sportsmanship as well as in team work. The boys have all husseled whether they were winning or losing. Coaches Humphries, Hornday, and Straehla are to be commended for this championship because they have spent long hours of hard work in developing this team. The team was honored in having two boys chosen for the Optimist ' s bowl. They were Dan Reese and Micheal Jolly. Because of injury Michael could not attend--Roy Burleson replaced him. We are very proud of this team that brought the first football honors to Owen High. Again we wish to congratulate the members of this team and the coaching staff.
