The course of this journey was chartered by the great state of North Carolina. Of the 121 passengers who set sail here in the first grade in 47 only 18 have completed the voyage to the end. Other members of this class have been picked up at different parts along the voyage. Our log reads that our first high school year re¬ corded 57 passengers. Many of our former pas¬ sengers had preferred to remain on some of the isles which we had passed enroute. Mr. Nesbitt was now at the helm of the ship in the absence of the helmsman, Mr. Shuford, who was serving his country in World War II. Mr. Nesbitt preceded to guide us along the chartered way. This year the girls distinguished themselves by winning the basketball and softball intramurals, winning letters which we have had in our stateroom ever since. Mrs. McCorkle and Mr. Byrd endured the re¬ sponsibility of sponsoring us in our many activities. As Sophomores several of the girls became very proficient basketball players. The sea was now calmer and the salty sprays were made more pleas¬ ant through the assistance of Miss Helen Heatherly and Mr. Seawright as co-helmsmen. By the time we had become Juniors the ship was a beehive of activity. The main functions being under the auspices of a new officer of the crew, Mrs. Martha Perley. Our Physical Educa¬ tion director, Mr. Byrd and Mrs. Perley sponsored the Junior-Senior banquet pleasing the gourmet of anyone who ever sailed the seven seas, using the motiff of the Gay Nineties. Dances were given, magazines were sold, and other means of raising money were devised to finance this big event. In September of 1948, a gleam of light and land was sighted and the passengers realized that the voyage was nearing its end. Of course, most of us were not as happy as we thought we would be twelve years before. We had worked hard and sailed over many rough seas in order to reach this part. Through the years many friendships had been made which would mean fond remembrances for all when the passengers would eventually dis¬ embark from the ship which had brought them safely from the wilderness of ignorance to the port of higher intelligence. Many would set sail in ships leading to various parts of life where they could best serve their fellowman and country. Class Historian Mary Jo Atkins MOST POPULAR (Girl).
