HISTORY OF CLASS OF ‘40 Twelve years ago, the Senior Class of ' 48, or most of it, walked through the doors of various school buildings for the first time, and optimistically demanded an education. Of the 121 first graders who started here in 1936, only twelve (12) have completed their entire twelve years of school in Black Mountain school. The rest of the present Senior Class have joined them, either in the grades, or in high school. We started our high school career with an enrollment of fifty-eight (58) eager freshmen, brimming with that naive self-assurance that only freshmen possess. The social highlight of our freshman year was the big hill-billy party, with one of our group winning a hog-calling contest. This was our first high school social and we eagerly looked forward to the coming years. We were greatly assisted through our freshman year by our sponsors, Mrs. McCorkle and Mr. Rich. We entered our sophomore year with an enrollment of forty-six (46), having gained a few new ones and losing a few older ones. Several of our class were officers and active members of various clubs. Also, since we were a very energetic class a large number of us went out for and made good in various sports. Our sponsors this year were Mrs. McCoy and Mr. Seawright. When we came to school as Juniors, with an enrollment of forty (40), we met many new faces and missed several old ones. We also met many new faculty mem¬ bers. Our junior year was a period of steady activity, under the sponsorship of Mrs. McCoy and Mr. Byrd and the leadership of Clarence Padgett, who was our president. Members of our class still continued to make good in sports and other extra activities as well as scholastically. Our Junior-Senior banquet was a great success, as well as all other parties during the year. Our senior year began with an enrollment of thirty-three (33). We began our last year of high school with Mrs. McCoy as our sponsor and Bill Morris as our president. Since we started as freshmen, we have lost fifteen (15) members of our class to the armed forces. Two members of our Senior Class, Bill Morris and Floyd Fox, who had to drop out of school when they were called by the sendee have come back to continue their education and will graduate with our present Senior Class. We will always be grateful to our parents for providing us with the opportunity to receive a high school education, and to our teachers for the patience and considera¬ tion they have shown throughout the years we were with them. Our faith in our homes and our school is the basis of the confidence with which we face the future. THE END Pat McDougle, Class Historian.
