Do you stand on tiptoe and try to peer into the unfolding of events for the next five years? Perhaps you would like for us, the Class of 1960, to share with you the cream of the experiences we have had as we traveled the road which you soon must take. That you may proceed without fear, however, we tell you first, that, for us, high school has been filled with wonderful, exciting and deeply worthwhile activities. In June of 1955, eleven of us reached our first plateau when, as a group, we received our seventh grade diplomas. Needless to say, we felt pretty important, but what we needed to cut us down to size - the upperclassmen had! As we began high school, so began the career of Mr. Macey White as our vocational agriculture teacher. Mr. Dale Smith (known to us as D-square) was our homeroom teacher. In the spring of the school year another instructor, Mr. Charles Alexander, joined the high school staff and did wonders for our faulty use of the English language. As freshmen, many important things happened and we, like to an awakening giant, began to move. We were put on athletic teams, elected officers in clubs, or placed on committees to do the various jobs around school. We were made stronger by the addition of two new students, Randy Banks and Tom Eanes, and a new science teacher, Mrs. Anne Mountcastle. In the fall of 1956, we experienced a great loss in the passing of Mr. Alexander as the result of an automobile accident. Again, we were in need of an English teacher, and in the early part of 1957, Miss Annie Banton joined us and we were once more headed in the right direction. That spring, we, along with the rest of the high school, invaded Washington. Mrs. Richardson and Mr. and Mrs. White acted as our generals as we captured Washington and confiscated many happy memories to bring back home. With Miss Banton as our homeroom teacher, and a new principal, Mr. Junny Smith, we set off to conquer our sophomore year. Now, we were even more active in sports and clubs than before, and we had begun to feel the speed with which graduation was approaching. We were fortunate to have Mrs. Ann Tyler as our new math teacher. In February, Miss Banton changed her name to Black but stayed on with us. With the freshmen, we spent our class trip at Yorktown and believe it or not, it became an educational excursion. In September of 1958, we entered Mrs. Richardson ' s homeroom, and how the time seemed to fly! Two months later when we received our class rings, we could actually envision ourselves in caps and gowns. Events were plentiful, and we discovered that things in life worth having, are worth working for. By this time, almost everyone was playing varsity something and serving as officers in some clubs. Also, we were beginning to get ready for our senior year and to plan our CHARLES CITIAN. May found us planning and then executing a full scale class invasion of Washington. This time, we hit a lot of the high spots we had missed as freshmen, and saw a good cross-section of Washington ' s weekend life. September 1959 found us again in Mrs. Richardson ' s homeroom, but this time as seniors. Some of us began to count the days, and others rushed around getting off college applications. We had two new teachers, Mr. Johnny Parker and Mr. Robert Leonard, with whom to get acquainted. We had for the first time in the history of the 37-year old school, a complete cafeteria, a chemistry laboratory, and a football team (which was undefeated). Under the wise counsel of Mrs. Richardson, we waded through rivers of tests - of national, state and school origin. As we approach the second and final plateau in Charles City High School, we look back with fond memories, but also we look forward eagerly to that which lies ahead. Class of ' 65, these happenings along with our class motto: Whatever the job, large or small, we do it well, or not at all. ' 60 or Bust! have, we hope, given you that peep, which you so desire, into the future. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the Senior Class of 1960, of Charles City High School, being of sound minds and bodies, realizing that our days as high school students are numbered, do hereby declare this our Last Will and Testament: ARTICLE I To our Parents, we do bequeath our humble thanks and appreciation for making possible the fulfillment of our first important goal. FOOTBALL TEAM We, the Indians of Charles City High School, made our debut in football this season. Under the leadership of Coach Robert Leonard, we are able to organize, outfit, and field a good six-man team, even though we did not get to play many games. We started late in the season and after our first stomp¬ ing victory, one opponent after another backed down and refused to play us. We were able to reach the top and post the undefeated, untied banner. This record we pass on to the coming football team with the sincere hope that they may carry on the tradition that we started.
