Berry Editor Dedication - To our friend, the friend of all THE REVEREND ALEXANDER BENNERS BERRY, JR. We lovingly dedicate our 1957 edition of the Charles Citian. In our hearts, where values count most, he lives. His fond smile is warm, his pleasant humor shines in his eyes, and his wise coun¬ sel is still clear. He made our leisure time h app i e r , our lives richer and our destiny surer. He has left with us not a void, but a fullness and an abundance of that which is great and good. While love lives, we shall have his love and he shall have ours. The Class of 1957 of Charles City High School Mr. A.M. Bruce Principal English 11,12 John Hopkins University Emory Henry V.P.I. We arenow endingthe first part of this jour¬ ney. These twelve years have been happy and enlightning. The only one of the original first grade class which is here now, is Ethel. The four boys started at different schools and moved to Charles City later. George started in C a 1 i f o r n i a and came here in the first grade; Harold started in Tazwell and came here in the first grade; Ashby started in Richmond and came here in the third grade; and Sandy started at Varina and came to Charles City in the fourth grade. Ethel has been the only girl in our class for two years. She should consider this a great honor to graduate with four boys of such high char¬ acter and ability. As we look on our grade school days we see that it was there that we got the foundation for our high school learning. We had such able teachers as Mrs. Walker, Miss Ella, Mrs. Nance and Miss Haupt. We will always remember these people and thank them for starting us along our way. When we came into the eighth grade in ' 52 we really thought life had begun. But as the custom is, we were left out of everything, for we were only eighth graders . The next year, however, things were dif- fe rent. We played on the athletic teams and became a part of high school. As the years went by we studied and played and waited for the year when we would be seniors. Now that the year has arrived we are sorry in a way that it is here. We are glad to finish school so we can go on with our life but we are sad in having to leave Charles City. We have had fun here. These days will always be remembered and whenever we are thinking, we will think about and cherish these wonderful days. ALEXANDER Mr. Charles R. Alexander, our teacher, was with us so short a time, and yet he w on the love and admiration of everyone, of every student and fel ?w worker. He made the interest of each student his own interest, always encou rag¬ ing that which was good and trying to prevent that which was undesirable. He worked untiringly for the good of the school; but, we did not think that he was working so much for the good of the school, as to help each one. With him each one of us was a distinct person, a friend to be helped. When we went to play, he went with us; and when we were trying to learn, he was there guiding and teaching. It was a tragedy when he w a s taken away. His place cannot be filled. Charles City High School can never be the same without him. Yet love will dream and faith will trust That somehow, somewhere meet we must. First Row: Ann Adams, Ann Banks, William Buck, Tommy Fenton, Karen Furr, Mary Lee Jackson.
