I 3 S’ ■v « i a J u SENIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the Senior Class of 1956, after many years of labor and waiting, after many hardships, shared with hours of happiness, have reached the highest goal in school by becoming Seniors. Each of us is about to go out into a world of his own, quite different from the past years spent in school. Some of us will continue to advance our e ducation by spending the next few years at colleges and univer¬ sities; others will enter various occupations. Each of us will remember, especially, the years in high school. As we look back, we will recall the year 1952, the month of September, and the first day of high school. Frightened, yet proud and thrilled, we en¬ tered the F r e s h m a n Class, with Mrs. Washburn as our homeroom teacher. We thought we were quite grown up but we soon found out that the seniors had their own ideas about us. At any rate, we were in high school. One of the first important things that we did was to elect class officers. For 1952-53 they were: Mable Briley, class president and Doris Adams, S e c r e t a r y and Treasurer. We ended t h i s wonderful year with an exciting trip to Washington, D. C. Time flew , and soon we found ourselves a step higher. In Sep¬ tember 1953 we enrolled as Sophomores with a class of five members. That year Mrs. Yates was our homeroom t e a c h e r . Doris Adams was class president and Mable Briley, Secretary and Treasurer. Doris and Mable were r e p o r t e r s for the Buzzer , our school paper. We ended this year with a trip to Charlottesville, to the University of Virginia. In September 1954, we found our selves drifting into our Junior year. Now we had a new member to join the class, Lloyd Marshall, a catcher to go with ever faithful John Burt, our pitcher, for the boys Baseball Team. Our Junior year was very eventful and happy. We received our class rings, and made some arrangements about the annual that we were to put out this year. Mrs. Richardson was our homeroom teacher and we held the same officers as last year. In September we became Seniors. Words cannot express how we felt. Our officers werethe same aslast year. This year we had a great job to do. We took upon our hands the task of making another volume of the Charles Citian for you. We shall remember all the days we went to sell ads; the long hours spent in deciding what was desirable for the annual, and what we could do to make the best yearbook possible. May Day, May 9, 1956 found Doris Adams as May Queen and Mable Briley as Maid of Honor. Toward the end of the last semester we had the excitement and fun of selecting our invitations, trying o n caps andgowns.and attending Bas¬ ketball and Softball games. At last came commencement night, the most important occasion of our school life-our goal completed. For us, Seniors, there will be many moments to remember as we go out to take our places in an adult world. Time goes on. i ' SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY TO MY CLASSMATES: I have for sometime now, beenhome from North Africa where I was working for the Baptist Board of World Missions. As I have little time with which to occupy myself, it gives me great pleasure to stroll along the tide swept beach of the James River and recall my past adventures. Foreign Missions takes a person to many parts of the world and I shall never forget one fieldat whichl was stationed. This was located on a large island. As is usually true everywhere else, there were days when weather did not permit us to work and we would sit around and talk of home. I met a man there named Ashby, who was possessed of remark¬ able power. Reputedly, he had the ability to answer any questions one asked him. Thinking this only a superstition, but having always disliked writing, I thought this an excellent opportunity to find out what has be¬ come of my senior classmates at high school. And so, as soon as I had the opportunity, I set out for the lodging of my prospective informer. I was heartily welcomed. I immediately presented him with questions concerning the professions and occupations of my classmates. Knowing that each one of you is interested in the others, I am sending each of you a copy of his answers. I asked him first about Mable Briley, the only other girl in my class. He said that Mable had married a minister and was living in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Next I asked of Robert Fenton, and he said that he had spent some time in the United States Army but was now working with his father in the shipyard. In order to check Ashby ' s infallibility, I inquired about John Burt, of whom I already knew. He stated that John had risen to the rank of admiral. Lloyd Marshall, he reported, had finally settled down on a small farm in Holdcroft and was working with his father-in-law. After retiring from Foreign Missions, I checked on all that Ashby had told me, and much to my amazement, I found that he was exactly correct. Even now as I stroll along the beach with my family, I wonder how such a funny little man could have given me such accurate answers.
