Janice Civilef D ' P 3 FORE WGRD As we look at the following pages, they will remind us indirectly of our internationally renowned State Power Project. Just recently a switch was thrown to mark the beginning of electrical production from this new facility. Likewise we here at Gaskill Junior High School have been working and acquiring valuable knowledge and ability. This has led us to consider choos- ing the theme Knowledge, Power, Progress from which Project-Gaskill has originated. In this yearbook, we have tried to list our school activities which we hope you will enjoy. Let us now pause and look at the highlights of the past year. Dimitri Rimanosky, Editor Emilia DeSimone, Assistant Editor 4 0 DEDICATION . X X , D4, ll A 5+ , n V V s N AN This year we would like to dedicate ' V X our yearbook, Project-Gaskill, to a W number of people. First, to the senior A class which will be the last tenth 1 grade in Gaskill. Next, to the ninth , grade which is spending its last year at Gaskill and will move to High School for their tenth year. Also to the faculty members who are leaving here to assume similar duties at Niag- ara Falls High. Last but not least to the retiring teachers who have faith- fully served on the faculty for many- years. To all these groups go our best wishes for happiness and success. EMILIA A. Des1MoNE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The staff for this yearbook wishes to express their sincere thanks to Miss Storey, our advisor, and Mrs. Condino, her assistant, for their guidance in editing the book. To Miss Finley and Mr. Kinan, our business managers, we are grateful for their part in making it a financial success, as well as the Student Council who sponsored it, and the faculty and student body who supported it. Not only to the Honor Society members who helped but also to typist Lorna Rusk and artist Tony Gagliardi do we owe a debt of grati- tude. Finally, we wish to thank Mr. Abbott, our principal, and Mr. Gold- stein, our vice-principal, for their encouragement and support. Next fall upon the completion of the addition to Niagara Falls High School, we will change to a true junior high program, 7th. 8th and 9th grades. The outstanding leadership, loyalty, school spirit and service that our 10th grade students will take with them to their new school will strengthen that school. They will now have three years to become a true part of that school. I know that those of you who remain will assume the mantle of leadership, loyalty, spirit and service continuing the tradition and greatness of Gaskill. MAURICE M. ABBOTT kann Zfze Wake pfzinoqaaf The successful Astronaut concerns himself with: Do I have adequate power? Are my direction controls O.K.? SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS T DENNIS ORMSBY FRANK FAIR MARCIA President Vice-President Secretary PETER FONTANA Treasurer TEN TH GRADE HISTORY This year marks the finish of the New York State Power Project as well as four enjoyable years at Gaskill Junior High School by the tenth grade class of 1962. September 1958 was an exciting month for the new 7th graders, who began to concentrate eagerly on great problems presented to them by many teachers. Our foremost purpose was to get all we could from Junior High School. It started out well for Judy Mamon, David Weaver, Jerry Molden- hauer, and Vicky Tomasine, who were winners of the best costumes at the Halloween Party. In December the 7th grade swimmers had a happy victory over North. The 8th grade was another happy year for the class. The awards for the highest average for the year before went to Thomas Weisflog and Brad Smith. The winners of the spelling bee were Peggy McKnight and Jackie Finley. In the Science Contest the honors went to Walter Watson, Tom Carlson and John Pileggi. For the first time the eighth grade put on their own Variety Show which was a huge success with songs, skits, and panto- mines. Louise Grande and Christine Wilk were the announcers and Linda Martino, Dennis Perez, Dave Donato, and Jeff Plumer all performed in more than one act of the show, with Mr. Stewart as director. The 9th grade was still another successful year. Thirty-one 9th graders were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. The highest average honors went to Brad Smith and Joe Critelli. Our champion football team was cheered on by the very capable cheerleaders: Janice Civiletto, Mary Lou Zarosl, Louise Grande, and Mary Ellen Ambrosio. After an exciting cam- paign John Zacher and Janice Civiletto were elected President and Vice- President of the Student Council having defeated Dennis Perez and Theresa Urbaniak. Ninth grade officers elected that year were Theresa Urbaniak, Dennis Perez and Gary Hayes. In our fourth and final year at Gaskill all of us were saddened but happy for the few who went to High School for their 10th year. The Honor Society elected their new president, Theresa Urbaniakg vice-president, Linda Martino, and secretary-treasurer, Robert Kaczynski. Christmas came and with it came the annual Christmas program.4Many 10th graders sang in it, and Gary Hayes, as Santa Claus, directed the sing- ing of Christmas carols. The musical comedy On the Range was put on in March with many of us participating, among whom were Linda Martino, Barry McRae, and Peggy McKnight, with Miss Haman as director. Our hearts are filled with joy and sadness at the thought of leaving Gaskill, but we know that we will never forget our Alma Mater. Historians Nancy Abbott and Sam Rangatore 23 CLASS PROPHECY OF 1962 PLACE-Niagara Falls, Perez's Old Spanish Inn TIME-1975 DENNY TO MARCIA: Do you know where I can find Perez's Old Spanish Inn? Class Prophets Rose Levy, Dennis Ormsby, John I-lesson, Marcia Ritchlin 24 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the 1962 Senior Class of Gaskill Junior High School, being of sound mind, character, and reason, do hereby bequeath this, our last will and testament, to the forthcoming leaders and workers, who will step up and carry on where we departing seniors leave off: ARTICLE I 1. To Mr. Abbott, Mr. Goldstein, and the Faculty, we leave a two month vacation to get away from the wear and tear of school life. 2. To Mrs. Wojcik and Mrs. Swiatkowski we leave our millions of little pink late slips. ARTICLE II To the following instructors: 1. To Mr. Kline, Sam Rangatore leaves a ruler for future geometry students. 2. To Mr. Sotile, Jim Mackie leaves his high-heeled basketball sneakers. 3. To Miss Ingrasci, Louise Grande leaves her bowling ability. 4. To Miss McLaren we leave all unwritten book covers to store in her already overcrowded closet. ARTICLE III To a few honored people we bestow the following: 1. Peggy McKnight leaves her peroxide bottle to John Mackie. 2. Bonnie Zetes leaves her brain to HAYES BELIEVE IT OR NOT. 3. Sherry Mele leaves her different personality to Cindy DiLaura. 4. Dennis Ormsby leaves his shamrock to Conrad Tubin so he can carry on the great Irish name. 5. Dimitri Riminosky leaves his homework papers to Sam Conti. 6. Leslie Boughner leaves his elevator shoes to Paul Verciglio. 7. Karen DiGregorio leaves her contact lenses to Henrietta Fontana. ARTICLE IV To the completed project, GASKILL, we leave four years of love and devotion, and take away a place in our memory which will never be forgotten. Testators: Linda Martino, Lynne Brovata, Frank Fair, Peter Fontana 25 NINTH GRADE HISTORY ' When we entered Gaskill Junior High School as seventh graders in September of 1959, we wondered whether we would ever know our way around. After the first few days it was surprising how well we were able to find our various rooms. Our first social event was the Halloween party, which we attended in costume. Prizes were won by Kathy Kaczynski, Joe Martino, Sam Mussari and Tony Riccuto. Before we realized it, the first ten weeks were up and we had the new experience of taking our report cards to our various teachers to be marked. The variety show, Gae Pareej' brought out many talented members of our class. Before we knew it, June had rolled around and final examinations were staring us in the face-but we triumphed and were soon enjoying our summer vacations. In September 1960, when Gaskill Junior opened its doors, we, as eighth graders, were familiar 'with every phase of school activity. We were no longer the Freshies of Gaskill. Scholarship awards for outstanding aver- ages in seventh grade were given to Margaret Dunlap and Joanne Lepiano in our first assembly. One of the outstanding events this year was the Valen- tine Party for the eighth graders, when refreshments, dancing, and a movie were enjoyed. In March the National Junior Honor Society inducted eighth graders for the first time, and many of our class became members. The variety show, Sentimental Journey, featuring many talented eighth grade students among the members of its cast, was a huge success. Time marched on, and before we knew it we began our third year at Gaskill in September, 1961. The freshman football team, under Coach La- bosky, attained first place in the city championship. The Honor Society's annual Christmas dance, held on the evening of December 15th, was very well attended and most enjoyable. After Christmas vacation we once more turned our thoughts to the closing mid-year marks. March rolled around and many ninth graders participated in our first musical comedy, On The Range? Finally June exams came and, although we thought we'd never make it, we passed and looked forward to tenth grade. Now, as we near the end of our ninth grade, which will most likely be our last year at dear ol' Gaskill, we look back over our three eventful years with warm memories. We will soon be starting all over again in a big, strange school, as Gaskill once seemed to us. But we're so very sure that no matter what happens or where we go, in our hearts we will always remem- ber Gaskill and its wonderful times. You should have seen us trying to crawl through those tunnels. Even though this caused us much trouble. we managed to get to class on time. In October of 1960, we had our annual Halloween Party. A tall man Walked on the stage, too tall to be human. Of course, there were two people in the costume. Danny and Gilbert Maines. They won the first prize. In the seventh grade science contest, the winner was Mark Lazeration who entered a collection of old watches. In January 1961, we had our annual Spelling Bee. Candy Frerk won in this contest. On January 20, 1961 a talent show was sponsored by the Student Council. The seventh graders put on a skit called OLD SCHOOL DAYS. Later the 7th graders participated in a variety show entitled SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. Pupils who took part in the song and dance of ME AND MY SHADOW were: Gloria Sweney, Cyndy Carver, Jeanette DeBacco. Kathy Ruff, and Charlann Levy. There were a number of boys that were on the basketball, swimming, and track teams, while the girls participated in volleyball and basketball. As we entered our second year in Gaskill, we no longer were caught in the flow of the onrushing students. Eighth grade students began to show their individual talents. In the fall 34 eighth graders were inducted into the Honor Society at a school assembly and individual awards were presented to Wayne Gladish and Sharon Butera for their outstanding averages. In spring at the Planta- tion, more of our class were taken into the Honor Society. In the annual spelling bee three of the four finalists were from the eighth grade. These included the winner Judy Baumgartner. Many of us submitted entries in the schoo1's science fair. Eighth grade award was given to Alan Rennie for his collection of butterflies and the all- school award to Edward Cieslik for his model of a power system. We also took an important part in the musical ON THE RANGE and the Spring Concert. As this year draws to a close, we look forward to the comingpyear in which we will start high school subjects and our last year at Gaskill. In this case Gaskill's type of intake is junior appren- tices, namely the seventh grades. On September 6, 1961, 414 apprentices signed up for work in Gaskil1's power house of knowledge. They composed 12 of the school's roll calls. The first few weeks were problem ones for these midget apprentices. The tall tenth grade master workmen tripped over them. They couldn't find their way to work through the halls. Also, they had trouble remembering room numbers, foremen's Cteachers' namesl, locker numbers, and combina- tions. Sometimes they brought the wrong tools to work by bringing the wrong books to class. Eventually, however, the junior apprentices started learning their trade and succeeded quite well. For entertainment there was the Halloween Party. All the apprentices wondered what to wear. As a result, many clever costumes were worn. Winners were the following: James Evert Ernest McDougald Beverly Hager Glen Mort Karen Leone Bill Thompson Next came the seventh and eighth grade spelling bee. Contestants who succeeded in surviving the first contest were the following: Barbara Capizzi Jennifer McCoy Francine Dudrick Richard Moses Brenda Maracle Jacqueline' Siudut Edward Matthews Joanne Vorel Today Gaski1l's apprentices are studying at the power station to go from apprentices to journeymen and then to master workmen. Finally, they will prove in the world that from knowledge and then power comes pro- gress, progress, progress. The after school dances were especially well attended during this time, with the seventh and eighth graders leading the way. The two night dances held during the year in cooperation with the city recreation depart- ment were especially well attended and enjoyed by all. A great success was the Sweetheart Swing record hop that boasted the best turnout of the year for a regular night dance. Other activities during the year included a basketball game that matched our Student Council and that of South Junior. The result was a 44-19 win for Gaskill. A Talent Show was presented to help support our foster child, Verra Frezza. This was a success. The Student Council also sponsored the Yearbook along with the Honor Society. Finally the Stcdent Council members served as hosts and hostesses throughout the year for numerous night social events. The Dial is the official news medium at the Gaskill Junior High School. Through the efforts of 25 staff members and their advisor, Miss Fezer, our faculty and student body is kept well informed on the latest happenings on the Blue and Gold campus. Approximately 850 people received issues of the Dial this year. The large number of subscriptions and the keen enthusiasm shown by the stu- dents is a fine tribute to our entire student body. A desire on the part of boys and girls to be well informed on school happenings will have a natural carry-over when they take' their place in society to be well informed on world happenings. Another purpose of the Dial is to stimulate a vocational interest among our students in newspaper work. By performing all the journalistic tasks that are a part of publishing a newspaper, it is felt that students will have a greater appreciation for this type of work. Perhaps some of our students will be stimulated to choose journalism as a career. Thus, the Dial is doing a worthwhile service in reporting the news and at the same time helping some of our students mature vocationally.
