We, the staff of the 1961 BLUE AND G0-LD, dedicate this yearbook to the eleven new mem- bers of our faculty in appreciation of their service to our school. No medals are awarded them for their accomplishments, but we hope this gesture will be a small return for their efforts. l Moving onward and upward toward greater goals is a challenge that must be met to insure the future. Such a challenge has be n met and fulfilled this year by all our teachers, in that they have given us a priceless storehouse knowledge, the key to a successful and rich life. May everyone use it to his best advantage, and mi! the efforts of our faculty o en th o r to many rewarding years. -Heidi Mueller , , is tj tx J, J E! fJ ext 1 1 X5 'J tx 2 Q L ,,l WW We sincerely hope that you will enjoy this record of your school days during 1960-1961. May the numerous pictures and write-ups remind you that all the people shown here, your friends and teachers, have worked together to make your school life interesting and worthwhile. As to the plan of our book, the staff fina-lly decided upon the medie- val fair 'as t-he theme of this year's annual. People of the Middle Ages met at the fair of old to exchange ideas, choose the wares they desired, and enjoy whatever amusements were offered. So at Gaskill we gather to try different subjects, decide on the school courses which 'often determine our life work, and to have four share of fun with our work. We would like -to thank all the members of the staff who gave of their time and efforts to make -th-is annual a success. We would especially like to t-hank our advisers, Miss Brennan, Miss Storey, Mr. Tyszka, and Mr. Kinfan for -their assistance and endless patience. We are grateful also to Mr. Abbott and Mr. Goldstein for their encouragement. We realize that it was the united effort of all the faculty that made possible the many ac- tivities shown here. In future years, when you look at this yearbook, may you be pleas- antly reminded of y-our days at Gaskill. CLASS OF '61 Joseph Genovese President Roger Fabin Judith Soluri Vice-President 59G 0fU Y'T 5 'er CLASS HISTORY High in a mysterious room of a musty castle, the wise magician Merlin and his assistants, Joyce Kowalski and Richard Torcasio, former Gaskill students, are found reminiscing through a dust- laden history book entitled Gaskill Graduates of 1961 . Merlin assumes the reading responsibilities and his voice echoes throughout the chamber as he begins with the year 1957. Many eager seventh graders invade Gaskill with exuberant enthusiasm. October provides them with a thrilling Hallowe'en party in which many homerooms present short skits. The winners are: Gretchen Mess, Mary Tucker, Richard, Townsend and Reta White. This year finds many of us extremely happy at the thought of having our names placed on the Honor Roll. Merlin's harmonious voice continues: Candy Cain wins the championship in Gaskill's annual spelling bee. A select few have the opportunity to join Gaskill's newly-formed science club. John Zankowski and Matt Zarosl hold the position of co-captains of Gaskill's eighth grade all-star basket- ball team. The ninth grade football team, cheered on by Kathy Conti, Janet Militello, Roslyn Murgia and Marilyn Leone, our very able cheerleaders, captures the city championship, Junior High Division, with Matt Zarosl as team captain. In swimming competition Gary Martin sets a new record for the 20 yard butterfly stroke. In May John Zankowski and Charlene DiLeonardo are elected president and vice-president of the student council. Scholarship awards are presented to Sandra Tantillo, Gretchen Mess and John Zankowski. Frank Biehl wins the overall school first prize in Gaskill's science con- test. Merlin now states the 1960-1961 school year has begun. Members of the Gaskill Junior Hon- or Society elect Joseph Genovese their new president, Elizabeth Halkowicz, vice-president, and Carol Maturani, secretary-treasurer. We, the Class of 1961, express sentiments of joy and reluctance at the thought of leaving our Alma Mater. We have tried to achieve our goals and will continue to strive onward. Gaskill will al- ways bring to mind memories of days of education and enjoyment. Merlin slowly closes the book and carefully places it on a high shelf where it will someday be found by others who will note the history of the Gaskill Graduates of 1961 . People are crowded in the streets and cheers of excitement echo throughout the town. Arriving in the town are Prince Roger Fabin, and two rock and roll kings, Joe Campese and Bob Koperski. Also s e e n arriving are the Prime Minister, George Dlugoz, and his dancing girls, Lorraine Puisys, Nancy Ann Wilson, and Rene Phillips. As the procession moves down to Carolyn Genova Street the g u e s t s are led to the seats of honor by the Secretary of Education, Michael Becotte. As we look around we see some of the celebrities present. Among them are the tournament cheerleader, Kathy Conti, and the Three Muskeeters - Carol Scott, Marianne Specht, and Linda Metzler. Merlin and the members of the court distinctly hear the voice of Prince Fabin as he tel-ls that his castle is owned by King Larry Rosen. 'Phe prince also tells of the theater owned by Phyllis Bobek, where at present Gary Di Laura is recreating dances done bv the great Jim Sorour. Every weekend the theater presents a jam session featuring Carl Hannold with his cool piccolo, and Tony LaRosa with his hot potato. Printovision is very popular. The main station is CNM fCandella, Nicora, Matsu- lavagel. Some of the popular programs are: Ballet Time starring Matt Zarosl and the famous western program, Three Gun Sdao , with his two sidekicks, Joe Sacco and Ar- nold Sinatra. ' Some of the commercials that really sell are 'a b o ut Joette Armelli's pickled ice cream, Gary DeFelice's high heeled sneakers, and Rosalyn Murgia's magical stilts. If one has talent, one may visit The Louise Scheider Talent Studio. The studio club has many members. Among them are: Donna Skrlin who made the hit song, I Only Have Eyes For Ricky Skwarzynski : Cheryl Taylor, a famous toe dancer, and Carol Hughey, a mysterious torch singer. There -are also Jon Schultz and Jim Mamon, the dragon eaters. Good food is plentiful, says the Prince. A luscious licorice two feet l-ong can be bought at any of Christine Del Grosso's and Jean Edward-s' grocery stores. Also there is Papa Pete Cerra's wild Pizza House where you 'can -buy pizzas as big as Lewis Jones, or as small -as Gordon Fogg. It is now time to leave the table and be on our way to the tournament that is about to start. Great crowds are gathering and we see Rose Coliceno, Carol Yankelunas, and Paulette Whittle. Knig-hts and their 'ladies come from far and near for this special event. The galleries are decorated with tapestries and banners and are fi-lled with gailv dressed 'men and women. Among them are Kathy Golda, Beverly Tedesco, and Sue Kada- kowski. The crowds are becoming tense. On the left side of the gallery we see Barbara Ro-sino with her lace and velvet dress made by the- famous d r e s s designer, Judy Soluri. Next to he-r sits Roy Alongi, court Romeo , and Jerry Sl-ipko, court Jester . Suddenly, Martin Sawma, Propaganda Minister, cries: Come forth knights, come forth. The knights in shining armor dash upon the field. From King Art'hur's Court we see Charles Harding, Ronald Lucin-ski, Les MacKenzie, and Bill Anderson. Challenging them are Richard Spalla, Kenny Pavan, Richard Nation and Frank Kankolenski, bold knights of Queen Dorothy Sobczyk's Court. A 'loud clash is heard as the brave knig-hts encounter. As we take 'a second look, we see knight Bill Wynes is dismounted. After he is carried off the field, we discover 'he has encountered a swollen finger nail. As the tournament continues, the crystal ball is -hazy and d-ark. What could it be that is causing this interference? As we look at Merlin, we see the reason. 'He has fallen sound asleep and we can no longer see what the future will be until next year. Dorothy Sobczyk, George Dlugoz, Roger Fabin LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT The 1961 Senior Class of Gaskill Junior High School, being of sound mind, .sound body, and -sound character, do hereby bequeath, upon departing, the following artlcles: ARTICLE I To Mr. Abbott and Mr. Goldstein, we leave a ticket to Rome where the Medieval Fair 'took place. Among them is the history of G'a'skill's 9th grade class of 1960-1961. Brother Tom Carlson begins reading these records with the section teliing of the 9th graders as 7th 'graders in the year 1958-1959. Among the prize winners for the best costumes at the annual Hallowe'en party were David Weaver, Jerry Moldenhauer, and Victoria Thomasine. Allen Karch won second place in the 7th and 8th grade spelling bee. Also, nu- merous 7th graders participated in the successful Variety Show. Brother Gregory Barker continues the reading of the section de- voted to the 8th grade in the year 1959-1960. The awards for the highest averages for the previous year went to Thomas Weisflog and Brad Smith. The spelling bee honors went to Peggy McKnight and Jackie Finley. The overwhelming success of the annual Variety Show was partly due to the talented 8th graders. Brother Walter Watson takes over reading more about this class. The 9th grade was a very successful year for them. Brad Smith and Joe Critelli took the 'highest average honors and a large number of 9th grad- ers were induc-ted into the Honor Socie-ty. Friar Schultz is very pleased at finding these priceless manuscripts arnd fir-dtiars ta-ll the monks to recopy them and distribute them throughout t e an . -THOMAS WEISFLOG l MRS. The year 196061 will be the last year at Gaskill for the Ninth Grade Honors Group, for next year they will be attending Niagara Falls High School, which offers a wider selection of advanced courses. Since this will be the first time an Honors group will go to High School for their tenth year studies, everyone wishes them much success in their new endeavor. ' -Louise Scheider EIGHTH GRADE As we approa-ched Ga-skill in September of 1959, w e anticipated many eventful years ahead of us. Walking up to the closed doors of Gas- kill, we realized -that in the com-ing years we would have to open and pass through many doors. We found, as we entered, a new and more exciting world. Still quite perplexed, in late October we came to a part-ly-opened door. As we peeked through, we saw a gay Hallowe'en party. For their original and colorful costumes, Kathy Kaczynski, Joe Martino, Sam Mus- sari, and Tony Riccuto received prizes. Weeks later our best seventh grade spellers competed in the seventh and eighth grade spelling bee. However, we couldn't mat-ch the skill of the eighth graders. Many of us who had seen previous Variety Shows were delighted to learn that the next door brought that entertaining event. We traveled through rn a n y doors until finally in June we came to the last one of the year. This door brought the obstacle of exams., In 1960 we came to take part in our second year at Gaskill. For their outstanding averages, Margaret Dunlap and Joanne Lepiano re ceiv ed scholarship awards. The Student Council sponsored a Toy Dance. The toys collected as admission were donated to needy children. Mrs. Twardoski dir- ected the eighth grade skit in the Talent Show, another activity sponsored by the Student Council. The main characters were Tom Swalwell, Barbara Leonard, and M-arge Gugino. The next doo r brought the Valentine Party, which con-sisted of refreshments, a movie, and dancing. Again the Variety Show aroused the interest of m-any in our grade. As we look back, we see that we h-ave left many d oo r -s ajar, but ahead of us are more closed doors. ACT or REVEIRENCE Almighty God, we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we seek Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, our country, an d upon all mankind. Amen. Eighth Graders Studying Science With Mrs. Sciarrino Miss Fermoile's Eighth Grade Class SEVENTH GRADE There were over 400 -seventh graders sitting in the auditorium of Gaskill on the morning of September 6, 1960. Soon there was a deep voice over the speaker and everyone was silen-t, for it was Mr. Abbott, who said, When your name is called, go out in the hall and stand with the teacher assigned. As the principal started to call the names, you could hear the mumble of voices rising in excitement. There were twelve roll calls, and most friends were -separated until after school. After a few days, we seventh graders really had something to talk about. Each of us ha-d to find o-ur own way because we did not know most of the others in our -classes, but most of u-s got along quite well. Some of us had trouble remembering room numbers and the names of teachers. Roll call troubles should be a subheading in this -story because there were so many problems-for instance, locks. The next big thing was the Hallowe'en party at school. One would go up to the other and say, What are you goin g to be, Dracula or a clown? It was a successful party with many different types of costumes, but one outstanding one was two brothers, Danny and Gilbert Maines, one on top of the other as a tall man. They won first prize. Now there i-s one more thing that some of the seventh gra-ders will participate in, and that is the Variety Show. I know this will be a big suc- cess too. JOHN MACKENN A . ',t , sg ,f' E Y 1 lg! THE YEARBOOK Of the various activilties and events at Gaskill, the distribution of the Year- book is one that is eagerly anticipated by the student body. The staff, students from Miss Brennan's 10-A class and the Honor Society, has worked hard and put forth much effort in compiling this book in the hope that it would meet and surpass the quality standard set by other fine yearbooks. Pictured on the title page are the three co-editors, Gary Martin, Heidi Mueller, and Louise Scheider. Credit for the cover design goes to Robert Inskeep. Faculty advisers were Miss Brennan, Miss Storey, Mr. Kinan, and Mr. Tyszka. This book serves as a record for 'the year 1960-1961. May you enjoy it now as in years to come. Besides offering a wide selection of academic subjects, Gaskill also offers many sports activities. These are also essential, for a strong body is as important as a strong mind. Boys are offered basketball, football, swimming, and track, Everyone wants to win, of course, but this is not possible. What is more important is that being on a team with the other guys teaches thie student how to get along with others and work together. Girls' sports include volleyball, table tennis, swimming, basketball and the important task of cheerleading. It is doubtful that any of us will ever make the Olympics - but we have fun. -Gary Martin GIRLS' GYM BQYS' GYM A SEVENTH GRADE BASKETBALL ALL-STARS First Row: Thomas Buffamonfe, Gary Carter, James Oleniczak, David While, Randy Joyce, Samuel Morreale, Ernest Domanico, Joseph Bongiovanni, Terence Wagner, David Walos.
