The Acting Superintendentgs Message MR. EDWIN F. LUSE Commencement will soon be here and gone. It represents for each of you the fulfillment of youth's bright dream, the beginning of a new life tomorrow. You have had your achievements. We glory in your success as you reach this milestone. We trust that your determination to meet the problems ahead will be strong and un- yielding. As graduates of Charleroi High School you have our sincere best wishes for your future life and happiness. The spring of the year is a wonderful season. Most of us like it best because it symbolizes an awakening of all nature as it makes a fresh start, a new beginning. ln many ways this typifies what we all must do at certain stages in our lives. Hawaii is a wonderful island, as some would have it, almost a land of Paradise. Many of us plan in our dreams to visit it some dayg and experience first-hand its restful way of life, its enthusiasm for the artistic and beautiful. its courage in time of trial. Today we pay tribute to the people of Hawaii because of their desire to make it spring again in their political life. and in a very real sense attempt a new beginning. This desire is akin to our own nature. We are proud and happy indeed to have them join us and become our 50th State.

The Acting Principal Speaks Schools are a part of the education our society provides for its youth. The family. mass media. the churches. the social institutions. youth organizations. informal community actiyi- ties all help to educate our young. But schools are established with the primary purpose of educating children and youth to become the kind of adults needed by society. The pattern of American schools is determined by the com- mitments our society has. Fundamentally. education exists to develop citizens who will be able to participate effectively in a democratic society and make decisions which will contribute to a realization of the democratic ideal. Persons responsible for schools will continue to be guided by a sense of obligation to produce the best possible citizen for American democracy. Certainly' it is agreed that our high school graduates must be as well informed and intellectually able as possible. The American high School must be intellec- tually stimulating with high academic goals. At the same time it must provide education that develops citizenship. mental health, and the ability to live effectively with others. MR. JOSEPH F. MALAK Farewell, in any' language, reflectively' and sincerely given to the thoughtful graduate con- tains many hidden implications and ramifica- tions. Class of 1960. vour future and your for- tune lie ahead in this ever-changing and un- predictable world. Space and the universe are yours to conquer and to mold to the democratic ideals. God Speed Class of 1960: let excellence in all endeavors be vour beacon to success.
