The Sponsor Remembers Hawau Mr Caruso at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel I remember Hawau I remember her well I remember her as gay and colorful and happy I recall her 1n more somber tones of war and uncertainty I remember the Aloha Tower and the island band when our 7th Infantry Division was welcomed there in 1913 We were the conquerlng heroes of the Aleutlans and we were to become the favorites of Hawau I remember Waikiki still wearing the barbed wire garb of wartime And how well I recall the people still carrying their gas masks I remember mv sadness upon first v1ew1n the devastation wrought upon Pearl Harbor by the Japanese sneak attack that December 7 now recorded ln history as a day of mfamy I recall happy moments too Hawaii in a ,ay mood in holiday attire-the Hawau of sonr. and storv and of legend My heart still warms with thou hts of Waikiki Beach the Royal Hawaiian the surf riders the banyan court of the Moana the le1 stands ln front of the Moana the hula and hula g1rl and yes even Fort DeRussy I remember passing McKinley H1 h School so many times of readlng the Honolulu Star Bulletin and the Honolulu Advertiser I remember looking at the stars through the palm trees and watching the surf roll 1n to shore I remember the warmth and hospitality of the friendly people and of their concerted struggles in a mlghtv war effort I remember Schofield and the G.I. life and of friends we had buried in the frozen desolate North and who were never to see Hawaii. There was sadness and there was homesickness and I remember them well. There are so many things to re- member of Hawaii. But most of all I shall always remember it as indeed the Paradise of the Pacific. And someday I hope to return. Waikiki Beach in wartime.
