And one of its .marvels is television. ,lust the turn of a knob and we have the world in our hands - a World of entertainment and knowledge. There is something for every viewer - music, drama, news. Westerns, childrenls programs, classes in educational subjects, sports of every season, and every- thing else in this passing show which we call life. The Cougar Memoir has felt the impact of television and has chosen it as its theme. Pretend along with us that our high school is television station WCHS-TV, and that we are presenting a full program of viewing every day of the school year. Pretend that our administration is the producer, our teachers, the directors, and you are the cast of the programs without whom there would be no WCHS-TV. So turn that knob, sit back and relax, every one is in his place and all is in readiness. Now we have the lights, camera, action. We're on the air! That was the beginning of a glorious lifetime job. This career spans a period of 34-M years-all in Char- leroi High School except for his first half year in our junior high school. During this time he has taught algebra and plane geometry. Mr. Mollenauer has been a good teacher-conscientious, sincere, and inspirational. Every algebra or geometry course was sprinkled with bits of philosophy for better living and a better understanding of the oft used words-the brotherhood of man. Extracurricularly, Mr. Mollenauer founded the Hi-Y organization in C.H.S. in 1931 and remained its sponsor to 194-7 when. the club disbanded. We can think of no better way to show our appreciation for and to heap some well deserved praise on our man who has devoted his life to the education of our youth than to repeat the purpose of the Hi-Y- To create, maintain and extend throughout the home, school and community, high standards of Christian character. We salute you, Mr. Mollenauer, on a career distinguished with honor and dignity. We shall miss you. We hope you and Mrs. Mollenauer will have a long and happy life after school, and may it be overflowing with the blessings of God. . Eight We Salute You MR. LESLIE D. SHRIVER Mr. Shriver began his teaching career in 1922 at Hopewell Township High School in Washington County. Then followed two yearslin Wheeling, West Virginia. He came to Charleroi High School in 1925 and has been here ever since. He has taught 37 years, 34 of them in Charleroi. During his stay in our school Mr. Shriver has devoted most of his time to teaching mathematics, economics, and sociology. Mr. Shriver has been a definite asset to our school. He is an independent thinker and a firm adherent to his principles-both personal and educational. It is good for the academic world to have a man of strong convictions. Extracurricularly, Mr. Shriver is known throughout the area as lVlr. Forensicsf' He was the founder and original sponsor of the Forensic Club in Charleroi in 1927. He has held that position to the present time. He has held district, state, and national offices in the organization. Room 205 will not seem the same without Mr. Shriver. He will indeed be missed. We salute you, Mr. Shriver, and we hope you will have a happy and successful life in your years of leisure. We hope that there will be a realization of your dreams and aspirations. The faculty and students of Charleroi High School wish him a full and speedy recovery, and hope that he will soon be back on the job. Superintendent Glunt sends the following message: To Seniors - Congratulations To all of you - Greetings This is both a happy and sad occasion. Some of you have been with us for three years W- you will be missed. We are happy you have completed an important phase of your education. Here is your recordg like television, it shows many important events of history. This is your history. We hope it is good, and may the rest of it be a proud one. We commend the staff and your sponsor for this record of events in your high school life. We all wish for you the best of everything. Mr. Glunt at his desk MR. DAVID L. GLUNT From the Acting Superintendent MR. EDWIN F. LUSE Greetings - Class of 1959: As the time draws near when you will have achieved your first major ambition in life-that of high school graduation -no doubt there are many things to occupy your thoughts. You have managed well so far, and richly deserve the con- gratulations of your parents, teachers and friends. But now what? This brings you to a mighty big decision which must be made. Will you continue your education or enter some field of employment? ln most cases the die is cast, so to speak. We who have worked with you as your teachers can only express the wish that you have chosen wisely. Television is a new and marvelous gadget that has be- come a real part of today's living. The natural laws which control its operation have existed for centuries, and during this time, no doubt, many have sought to discover these laws but failed-until recently. Progress always consists of succeeding where before others have failed. It is this hope of possible new things for the future which should spur us on to seek new achievements. Life has changed more in the last fifty years than in the centuries preceding. It is entirely likely the next fifty years will see an even greater change. Does it excite your aspirations to know that you can be a part of this changing world? Congratulations, members of the Class of 1959! But more important, may you succeed where others have failed! The Acting Principal peaks The growing complexity of our industrial society. accented by technological and scientific break-throughs, has called for a re-appraisal of many facets of our national life. Edu- cational leadership is charged with the responsibility for developing youth to assume its place in science, industry. government. and other key areas of life. As educators, we recognize our responsibilities. We have worked with you for the past three years in order to help you reach this milestone towards your goal. The best wishes of your faculty and friends go with you as you leave this school for the last time, and begin the larger life which lies just beyond the threshold. Now you must carry on. As future citizens, what are you going to do to meet this challenge? L AURIE STEPANIAN Sports Editor ...... JAMES ROBERTS One Hundred Two The Cougar Courier is one of our two publications. It is our school newspaper, and through it the student body is informed of all the school news. Everything that happens in C.H.S. is reported. The make-up and operation of the staff are very much like that of a city newspaper. There is an editor-in-chief, special editors, reporters, and typists. The news is collected and arranged for publication. Pictures are taken by the Cougar Memoir photographer, and these help to make the Courier a more interesting and attractive newspaper. As in the past, this year's Cougar Courier is published by the Charleroi Mail. It appears once a month, the last three issues being devoted to the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Again Mrs. Steiner is the sponsor. It is through her efforts that the paper has achieved much success. The Business Staff is also a part of Publications. They solicit for advertisements for both the Cougar Courier and the Cougar Memoir. They have sole charge of the sale of the newspaper, and although the Cougar Memoir handles the sale of the yearbook, all the financial deals are trans- acted through the Business Staff. Mr. Solan is the very capable sponsor, and he is assisted by the hard working business man- agers-Bonnie Delasta, Patricia Paterra, and Mary Ann Poteray. However, they had to be content in sharing the championship with Monongahela as the two teams finished with identical 3-0-1 marks. Under the direction of Coach Currie and his assistants, the team enjoyed another winning season, posting a 7-2-1 record. They lost only to W.P.1.A.L. runner-up, Clairton, North Catholic, and tied Monongahela. The Cougar Memoir wishes to congratulate both the coaches and the team.
