RD IF you had Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp what would you wish? What are wishes? We of the Cougar Memoir like to think that they are the dreams we dream when we are awake . We also feel that everyone should have a dream-a goal in life. Make it' a glorious goal and reach high-beyond your grasp. But the dream isn't enough. It becomes of value to you only when it comes true. It would be wonderful to have Alad' din's lamp, to rub it and then ask the genie to grant your wishes -to make your dreams come true. Alas, we aren't Aladdin, and we don't have the lamp nor any short cut to the realization of our dreams. It takes work and work and work to attain those dreams. So make your wish, dream your dreamg then work and make it come true. . 4 asf' lk 'fi , , ' -I' ' '- ' :F . e ' 'H' 5:9 N. --fmgt, -g, M, . 4 ,f , , l 5' . ,tn i. e iijnk. .tQ.uJEi?r. Iams on Wednesday evening, Decem- ber 18, 1957 of coronary attack. Mr. Iams was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College where he received both his bachelor and master degrees. He began his teaching career in Gillespie, Pennsylvania in 1922. Mr. Iams came to Charleroi High School in 1929. He taught biology and later chemistry. This year would have been his 29th year at our school. In that time Mr. Iams made a host of friends among the faculty and students. Our school has benefited immensely from his teachingg we shall miss him greatly. Yet, we know that his work will continue. For he planted the seed in the young minds of his many students and they will spread his work. To his wife and children we extend our heartfelt and sincere sympathy. ,A Nine - 5 .4 awp- +.t. fs,-Q:-0- - ' 1 , g at ,Mp - ,Lx . . -0' f SIAOOK l' AQ Sitting -- Mr. Pcrc cl.ll'I1lL', Scurcury of tlw Allmlcxic Cfzmmmitlcuq Mr. Ifrnnk Pucui, Vicc Prcsillcnl of nhl- limrdz Mr. Timm nlnrc ll. l'n'cucr, l'rcsi1.lcnl of the liuarslg Mr. Rnlpll Arriglil MTM .lUSUPl1ll10 YUlll13:I11-III. XVe associate the classic tale with our dreams. That has been true of people for many generations, for they have dreamed as you and l. Dreams-to think idly-to pass in reverie. The land of dreams-the region of fancy or imagination. Dream- er-a visionary-one who forms or entertains vain schemes. All of us at some time have entered into the mysteries of this fantasy world. But most have returned to reality to find it requires more than The Lamp or fantasy for worthwhile accomplishments. As Goethe so stated when he said, Happy is the man who early learns the wide chasm that lies between his wishes and his powersf' A modern example is our present world position. We have wished too long: now we must develop our in- dividual and national potential. You are all eye witnesses and living in an era of great changes-greater than the world has ever exper- ienced. This is an era of atomic energy, hydrogen bomb, missiles, earth satellites, and space travel almost a reality. There is an entirely new concept of power and energy. But the greatest of these is Man's-Your potential. You are witnessing the fruition of many endless hours of toil by some remembered and some almost forgotten scientists who dreamed and then worked hard to acquire knowledge Mr. David L. Glunt that moved all this a step closer to reality. As awe inspiring as these are we must never lose sight of God, the Great Planner, who placed it all here for Man to develop-by dreams and toil. You, the Class of 1958, are maturing in an age of amazing and exciting miracles. Dream, but back it with study and the acquisition of knowledge to stay abreast of this space traveling speed at which the world is moving. We shows you developing peace with sincerely hope and pray that we have sparked the light in your Aladdin's Lamp and it the way for further study and acquisition of knowledgeg that you may have a part in this great light that is growing brighter each generation that Man someday may live at God and his neighobors. Congratulations to the Cougar Memoir staff and your sponsor, Mr. Caruso, for this light on your high school record. It is the result of dreaming and imaginationg then brought back to reality by hours of hard work. Eleven Graduation from high school is not the endg it is .jfte Qincapaf ,SjoeaL5 The story of Aladdin and his magic lamp has been a favorite for many years. Old and young alike find in it those things which appeal to the imagination. The spirit of youth with all of its dreams and hopes for the future is indeed a part and parcel of this story which has lived in the best known literature for so many cen- tunes. All of us dream. Three years ago as you first en- tered the open doors of Charleroi High School your future had meaning because you wanted the diploma which it offered at the end of the trail. Wishing, or rubbing a magic lamp, didn't make it come true. It took more than that, including some hard work and a perseverance to win over all obstacles. But it was the dream of the ultimate victory ahead that made giving up impossible. Congratulations, then for your first real dream of life is about to come true. only a beginning. Now you are prepared for bigger things. For some of you it means much more difficult study in collegeg for some, further training as an appren- tice for some tradeg for others, perhaps the beginning of a business experience. For all of you it is essential that a vision of a higher and larger goal supplants the wishes of childhood. Wislmesl Dreams! Keep them. Make them bigger and ever bigger. But most important of all, make them come true. Twelve O P Mr. Luse al the P. A. Through the Courier we are able to learn school news, read the many excellent feature articles that appear in each issue, and keep in con- tact with high schools students throughout the nation. This year marks the 20th year of publication for the Cougar Courier. During these years it has faithfully printed the schools news of C.I'I.S. The paper is published monthly with the last three issues devoted to sophomore, junior and senior activities respectively. The Cougar Courier is composed of four staffs-news, feature, sports, and alumni. The news staff gets all the news events of the school. The feature staff writes the articles such as Mirandy and Marildy. The sports staff covers all the sports events, and the alumni staff writes about our students who have graduated. Heading each staff is an editor. The editor-in-chief has charge of the make-up of the paper and the editorials. Another part of publication is the Business Staff. It handles the financial affairs for both the newspaper and the yearbook. This group is composed of senior and junior girls whose main job is to solicit advertisements from local merchants. They also are in charge of the sale and distribution of the Cougar Courier. Eighty-Five WW Wemlm lu Row -- S. Uulwnanxky, -I. Mcli, kl. Andcrs, li. Pctrilak, CI. MCKcnna, K. Fnrqulmar, M. Both as a curricular and extra- curricular activity it has been vitally important to the life of the school. To the participant as well as to the listener this should result in a better understanding and appreciation of music in our daily lives. Our music program helps to develop interest in good music, attitudes of appreciation and discrimination to part singing, vocal tone, and provides a delightful change from books all the time. The music department is comprised of instrumental and vocal music. Mr. Edward Sweadner, the director of music for Charleroi school is director of the band. Mrs. Elizabeth Kramer, who joined our faculty in January, directs all the vocal groups. The band is famous throughout the state. It plays at the football games, pep rallies, and bon- fires. It holds an annual spring contest, and plays for many civic affairs. The vocal groups range from solos and trios to large groups of S0 and more. These groups participate in school life by sing- ing in assemblies, the Christmas program, baccalaureate services, and the annual spring concert. All the music groups participate in the PFML contests, and they always perform well. GIRLS' ENSEMBLE 8 I ii Ja... lst Row - A. Fantini, j. Henrion, N. Pennline, j. Guzy, J. Meli 2nd Row - B.
