A horoscope or nativity is a map of the heavens at the hour of birth showing the positions of the heavenly bodies and their influence upon man. There are twelve such constellations located in an imaginary broad belt in the heavens, which the sun traverses annually. This is called the zodiac, and each of its twelve signs is credited with its own characteristics and influence. From time immemorial the magic and mystery of the stars have fascinated man. Long before the Christian Era the ancient people began to study them. Through this art or science of astrology man began to predict future events, especially the fortunes of men, by the position of the stars. The deeds and destinies of men were directly credited to the stars. The astrologers of ancient civilization conceived and named the signs of the zodiac which have been handed down through the ages to the present time. We have shown all the signs and symbols of the zodiac throughout this book. How can you read your horoscope? It is really very easy. All you need to know is your birthday. Then check the cable of contents on page six for your natal sign, and read your own horoscope on the prescribed page. Because of space limitations we have included the birthdays of seniors and members of the faculty only. To all of you, however, the Cougar Memoir wishes a happy birthday, and-watch that horoscope. A great sehool must ha ve a soulg a soul to reaeh out beyond the stars ever in search of trtlthg .1 soul that ean then instil this truth into the hearts of youth in common, everyday terms. An tl what gives a seliool this soul? lt is the teachers, who in their eeaseless, devoted and s lime ways, lead our youth in this search of free and truthful thinlin-' N by Yet, there must he one to guide the leaders. There must be one to set the pattern, to explore unknown horivons---to find the right way. There must be one who is the ultimate great soulu as we build our great sehool. The guide in the Clharleroi School llistriet has been for nine years a superintendent, one year an as- sistant superintendent, twenty two years a principal, three years a teaeher-for thirty five years devoting his llle to the liuilding of a great school. Wie like to think that here is a man and his dream-a dream that came into being when he first entered the field of education. Tlirouglt the years that dream was nurtured. lt grew and hlossom l int i l'C.lllIX'. Lil K, il And now, as he leaves, it is good to know that the dream remains-that under the leadership of our teaehers and new superintendent who remain. it will eontinue to grow and blossom and yield fruit- our edueated youth. It is good to have faith in this. lor all these things the Cougar Memoir salutes you, Mr. W. H. Clipman, -lr. 'lien u b- gf But man was not meant to dream alone. A dream must be shared with someone you love--- the disappointments, the hard work, the many obstacles, the final fruition---all these must be shared. The Cou'ar Memoir is ieased to vresent Mrs. Cli man, the ins iration and sharer of a dream. is P I P P The stars declare that the ideal marriage partner for a daughter of Taurus is a son of Scorpio. They further indicate that the ideal marriage partner for a son of Leo is a daughter of Aquarius. Star-crossed? Nay! The stars have been good to you. Together you have had a full life, experiencing the pleasures and the heartbreaks of living. Together you have been very happy. It is indeed written in the stars---that this is another beginning, another adventure, perhaps another dream. The stars proclaim more success and happiness and love. Wfe are glad. A horoscope is a chart, showing the relative positions of the stars, used by asrrologers in making predictions. We both may be very intimately concerned with our own horoscope- Mr. W. H. Clipman, Jr. you, because you are just beginning your career, I, because I am just closing my career. ln your case, the relative positions of the stars are most favorable to you in pros- pect of long, challenging, useful, and happy lives ahead. The Balance Sheet for a Graduating Class, which I recently placed in your hand, tells you just what I mean. In my case, the relative positions of the stars are just as favorable, but largely in retrospect. My career as an Educator is soon to end. It has been an experience of thirty-five years, all spent in Charleroi, and giving me a great deal of opportunity to balance my account. I can only hope that you, and others, who may evaluate it and weigh it in the balance, shall not find it wanting too much. May I wish for you every happiness and success, through the years ahead, in your accomplishment of that long, challenging, useful, and happy life which the stars predict for you. So, as we both go forward into the future, let us keep our eyes on the stars. It is possible to see the challenging new frontiers only as we look out and up. Most sincerely yours, I jfre rinctyaaf cgroeafw According to the astrologers the twelve signs of the zodiac represent the physical framework of man, played upon by the magnetic and planetary currents according to the position of the sun, moon, and planets at birth. They claim it is a science, and if we live according to all these signs, we can plan our lives exactly as we interpret them-our horoscopes. This is unbelievable to most of us, but it should bring something into a clear focus that is far more important to you-that through a faith in God and the discipline of education you will be able to accept or reject many of the beliefs, ideologies, doctrines or dogmas to which you will be subjected. Only through continuous study and evaluation will you make wise decisions upon which your happiness and MR' DAVID L. GLUNT success will depend. July om,-Cu,m,, Teachers have all contributed to this needed discipline, whether it be moral, mental or physical. We sincerely trust you will realize that We were pointing out some of the landmarks or signs which are so urgently needed by students to help guide them to a happy and effective citizenship. Under the direction of the sponsor, Mr. Caruso, the Cougar Memoir staff has given all of us, especially the seniors, a history as well as a horoscope. Congratulations-well done. ts f SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE COUGAR MEMOIR: As the Cougar Memoir goes to press Mr. Glunt 'C has been elected superintendent of schools for next K year. We hate to see him gog he has been good to I at us, he has been good for the school. We shall miss him very much. But we realize that his new position is a step upward, and we know that man is forever wanting to reach higher aspirations. At the beginning this group clears the stage, sets up a temporary setting, and prompts the actors. Here the performers and director realize the importance of a good stage crew. Being responsilule for props, furniture, sound effects, working the lights and curtains are hut a a few of their duties. The stage crew, Mr. lliclts and his boys who built and painted the set, and Mrs. Caruso who did such an excellent ioh of directing the play all deserve the praises heaped upon them. The projector muSt be set up and threaded, the screen must be in place, and someone must operate the projector. The students in the A.V.A. give up study periods in order to run the machine in the various classrooms. Mr. Baird has the assistance of two capable secretaries, Patricia Farley and Barbara Fabian. The boys can be proud of their good, clean playing of the game of their never give up attitude, and of doing the best they could. The Cougars' lean season can be attributed greatly to their lack of height. Another contributing factor against C.l-LS. success was the loss of playmaker, Maury Guttman at mid-season. This year's team was coached by Henry Pennline who did an admirable job. Carl Aglio and Ronald ' Chubby Podwika were the eo-captains.
