When Charlerol Was Young Wfhen the century was young, Charleroi was new. No radio tower pierced the sky: paved streets were at a minimumg rows of business houses were still to come. Indus- try had only made a start: the hill was far from being developed. Rather. the land- scape included scattered buildings and houses, pasture lands and orchards, wooded lands and covered bridges. Still, the pat- tern was being set, and in these pioneer days Charleroi became a boom town with the urge to grow, with an unbridled ambi- tion to develop physically, industrially, educationally and culturally. The Char- leroi of today is the realization of these early dreams.
