This everlasting inspiration of unselfishness began with a French sailor, Jean Louis, in 1763. He was concerned for the sick who were too poor to pay for medical help. In his will he stated, I bequeath in perpetuity to the founding of a hospital for the sick of New Orleans. A home on Charters and Bienville housed the first Charity Hospital of New Orleans which was called Saint John ' s at that time. Later in 1786 another benefactor DonAndreas de Almonaster y Roxas aided the needy hospital and the name was changed to Charity Hospital of Saint Charles after the King of Spain. Charity has been housed on Charters, Rampart, Canal and then to its present location on Tulane in 1939. Hurricanes, fires, and increased population have demanded the necessary addi- tions and alterations. However, even though the buildings and locations have changed several times during the 238 years Char¬ ity has been in existence, the strength of Charity ' s dedication has not waned. Charity School of Nursing founded in 1894 is an outgrowth of the same philosophy, love, and concern with unselfish dedi¬ cation to the sick. Our school has been in operation for eighty years with an impressive num¬ ber of 4329 graduates and many more to come in the future years. Changing times, trends, lifestyles and buildings haven ' t diminished the spirit and devo¬ tion of Charity nursing students and the other allied medical professionals. Therefore, we dedicate this yearbook not only to our past but also to our future because as students of Charity, we are a mirror image of Charity ' s past history of dedication. lilt f 1 11 CHARITY HOSPITAL OF NEW ORLEANS • m mi  ini « llli «   ii | IMlifil 1 C 1 fr n mMHW ■ i aiis i : rn : t I |B g i s 11 a ids g till i •“ 85 I fall | 1181 1 lilt Z i • 11 i I Mil I 111 I i ins i in i is? This approach helps in the estab¬ lishment of effective relationships with patients, families and other members of the health team. 51 Surgical Nursing Surgery II takes into account the care necessary for the surgical patient as he passes through the in¬ tensive phases of care. _ Nursing of Children Nursing of Children is geared toward enabling the student to learn skills necessary for providing effective care for the pediatric patient. The course encompasses experiences in the PICU, pediatric emergency room, and the child de¬ velopment center, as well as on the infant ward, ju¬ venile ward, and closed care center. Siffsfc 55 Community Nursing The nurse ' s job goes further than the confined walls of the hospital. Community nursing broadens the students ' scope of knowledge by placing her in the teaching position as she educates and cares for those outside of the hospital. 57 Junior Class Right: Junior Class Sponsor, Sharon Rut¬ ledge, Below: Junior Class Officers, Patti Stevens, Vice-President; Jayne Patterson, Treasurer; Wendy Manint, Secretary; Pedro Garrido, President. 58 Tina Acosta Lockport, La. The National Student Nurses ' Association has for sometime now adopted project Breakthrough as its priority. The New Orleans area was recently granted $3,000 to work toward meet¬ ing the goals of this project and Char¬ ity functions as the main base. We have set up a regional committee with all New Orleans area nursing schools involved and are now planning ways to reach out to minority groups (males, blacks, Spanish speaking, etc.). Hopefully, CHASN will provide increasing opportunities for students to become involved in community projects in the future. Nancy Bourgeois was CHASN ' s nominee for Student Nurse of the State. CHASN advisors are Mrs. Mary Ann Wormuth and Ms. Sharon Rutledge. Breakthrough board includes Pedro Garrido, Chairman; Wendy Manint, Co-chairman; Mrs. Mary Ann Wormuth, Advisor. 101 Ixthus is a Christian organization whose goal is to learn more about God, life, people, and the interrelation of each. They showed talent, harmony, and the desire to make our yearbook a very special diary of our memories. Our basic theme has been a contrast of the old and the new, but as I see the finished product being mailed for publication, I realize we have upheld a spirit of Charity that remains the same from yesterday, to today, to tomorrow. Our book is more than pages with ink—it ' s a sign that once more we have been brought together in the spirit of love and have suc¬ ceeded to make our actions and daily events worth remembering. Thanks to each and everyone of the Caps and Capes staff for a job well done. Valerie Zeringue, Editor 127 mm Wf mm mm p Mr m vlay wt: Never le Hail! Ain ■L„ m i wA m A w m $$$ « Hail!
