Administration ■ Curriculum ... 18 Classes.46 Organizations . . 76 Activities.94 In today ' s age of technology, changes are inevitable. They take place within minutes, overnight and over years. The changes may affect one or many. Here in our own school we have recently been affected by new curfews, new sign out rules, new dress regulations and a new building. In Charity Hospital, new uniform regulations, new services and modern equipment are evident. In our community, new buildings are being erected, new responsibil¬ ities and privileges.are being given to the young. But amidst these renovations, some things never change. How does this effect us? Are we dy¬ namic enough to change with it, or will we be lost in memories of the Past? Administration And Curriculum 17 Under the leadership of Charity Hospital director, Dr. Charles Mary, Jr., and the Charity Hos¬ pital Board of Administrators, the hospital underwent many changes during the past year. New areas in the hos¬ pital include a four bed respiratory intensive care unit, a coronary care unit, and a pediatric emergency admit room. The integraded systems which form the body and maintain it in a proper state were the main topics sudied in Anat¬ omy and Physiology. The nursing student learned the basic principles of Mi¬ crobiology with special em¬ phasis on the application to her daily practice of nursing. The student was provided with the current concepts of the scientific principles of Nu¬ trition and their application to meet the individual ' s physiological and psycholog¬ ical needs. Chemistry offered a survey of the general principles which govern the chemical processes of the body. Disecting the brain, above takes much time and effort, Mr. Crais explains to his stu¬ dents. Mrs. Smith, below, strives to teach her students good nutrition. MR. D. CRAIS MRS. J. SMITH MISS K. TINSLEY 25 Preparing To Meet Basic Needs Of Patient 26 Several new teaching techniques were used in Fundamentals of Nursing. First of all, a new lec¬ ture on student responsibilities and study techniques was added. As a new experience in commu¬ nication, tapes were used in which new material was presented on improving communication tech¬ niques and building therapeutic relationships. Also for the first time, material was presented on meeting the rest and sleep needs of the patient. New material on topical applica¬ tion of drugs eye, ear and nose drops was studied. Also new con¬ cept media filmstrips entitled Psychological Aspects of Cancer were viewed. A further new learning experience focused around a lawyer ' s lecture on the legal aspects of nursing. WEISHEIT Bedmaking and communication techniques are important lessons learned in Fundamentals. i 1 29 Psychiatric Nursing aims to establish helpful nurse-patient relationships with emphasis on understanding behavior and purposeful use of self. By working with hospitalized patients with psychiatric disorders at Charity Hospital and Veterans Administration Hospital, students received the opportunity to gain a better un¬ derstanding of all persons and the ability to use concepts of psychiatric nursing in all areas of nursing practice. Planned experiences in¬ cluded establishing the one-to-one relation¬ ship, planning group activities with the patients, participating in various group ther¬ apies and attending the psychiatric out-patient clinci. Sandy Pitre and Mary Moore (right) participate in group therapy sessions as part of their psychiatric training. Dale Collura (below) aids patient with handicrafts in occupational therapy. Changes that were evident in these hospital wards included a premature nursery annex, which is an overflow nursery for the normal nursery on 10th floor. The labor rooms were partioned into four separate rooms with a four bed capacity to provide more pri¬ vacy for the patients. Harriet Oliver (right) gently handles a newborn baby, while below, Jean Bowman gives baby his cereal. Jay Gonzalas adds a new look to the O.B. ward as he turns on one of the tv ' s donated by the Alumni Association. Helping Bring New Life To The World Lydia McCoy (above) bottle feeds one of her small patients, as Dennis Pinkozie (left) exerts tender loving care. At right, a new mother views her baby shown off by junior Sherry Smith. Specialized Nursing Care Taught Joanne Goldfinch (above left) checks blood pressure in the cancer research center. Rosalind Albritten (right) assists an ambulatory patient with a post operative breathing treatment. Brenda Richard (below) talks with her patient while Mary Moniz checks the IV. 34 Surgery I is divided into two divisions: Operating Room where students learn to scrub and assist with the operation as well as circulate, and wards, pre-operative, Recovery Room and post-operative. Barbara Glover and Carolyn Daigle instruct a patient in positive pressure breathing. 35 Comprehensive Care Is Learned This year the instructors of Med¬ icine made the course more student centered. This means that the stu¬ dent took a more active role in the class theory by presenting a patient with the disease being studied. The students looked up medications, diagnostic tests to be preformed and other aspects of the illness and discussed them in small groups. Mary Ianazzo (above) shows the doctor where to find the radial artery. Cindy Bahr tires to persuade her patient the machine won’t bite back. 36 Cheryl McGinnis (above) offers water to her patient while Helen Ruberts looks on. Myra Diaz (left) has a friendly visit with her patient. But Michelle (above right) you have to give him cardiac massage ! 37 Speciality Areas Qtudied In Med-Surg The course of study in Medical- Surgical Nursing included such areas as MICU, SICU, Neurology, and Team Nursing. The students in these surgical areas worked amidst some of the changes going on in Charity Hospital. The surgical wards have initiated a new system of progressive patient care whereby acute patients are located in one ward. As the patient’s condition improves, he is transferred to other ward until he gets to the self care unit. Amidst the traction wires and pulleys (right) Debbie Waguespack and Lindy Sibly position their patient in be d. The technique of drawing blood gases is learned in intensive care units. 38 Students in Team Nursing observe as staff nurse removes the patient ' s bandage. Mrs. Lee (left) carefully studies her students’ performances. 39 Good Health Promoted Outside Of Ward This year’s course in Out Patient Nursing offered a variety of new experiences to the student. Students learned to do venipuncture in the hospital laboratory under the guidance of laboratory technicians. Experience in the new pediatric emergen¬ cy room began, and there was greater depth of learning in conditions of the ear and eye in these clinics. More emphasis was placed on student discussion of topics for the promotion of mental health and for more adequate nutrition with patients in their homes. In accident room (above) Sylvia Bullings assists the doctor by taking the patient’s pulse. Learning the procedure for veinipuncture in the laboratory are Alice Carmouche and Madeline Cerniglia. Joanne Frichter assists doctor by sup¬ porting leg of patient while his ancle is wrapped in the busy accident room. 40 Lynn May and Pam May observe as M.D. makes an examination in Out Patient depart ment. To administer a vision test was one of the skills learned in Out Patient Nursing. 41 Nursing On A Smaller Scale i i ! Nursing of children offered to the student theory and nurs¬ ing experience in the care of children from birth to twelve years of age. Clinical experience was ob¬ tained on the pediatric units of Charity Hospital, a 300 bed unit, as well as in the new pediatric emergency room. Lynn May and Cindy Stienkamp (above left) teach mothers how to read a thermometer in new pe¬ diatric emergency room. Patty Illg (above right) instruct parents on tube feeding. Never having a complete staff at one time I can only thank those who drifted in in times of dire need to help. To our sponsor, Mary Frances Smart, who weathered my many moods, always with a smile, thanks are not enough. As I look back on this year it truly has been a trying one, full of challenges and changes, successes and defeats. It was certainly an experience at least. But because of the people I have met and the things I have done I have changed. My ideas and philosophies have been altered as has my life - for the better or worse still remains to be seen. So, look back on the year and even if you have not changed, go over some of the lessons you missed along the way and you will be better for at least that.
