It should be the desire of each girl as she receives the Cap that distinguishes her as a Charity student and the lamp that marks her as a Nurse, to uphold and honor her noble calling. The Nightingale Pledge must become alive, not just in the words spoken so well on this night, but in everyday practice at the bedside of each individual patient. I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly; to pass my life in purity and practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the prac¬ tice of my profession. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care. Since that year it has grown into an organization which plays a major part in the activities of many students. During the 1955-1956 year the L. A.S.N. at Charity was active: they sponsored a membership drive, which was won by the Senior Class and a party was given in their honor. They sent ten delegates to the State Convention in Alexandria. They plan to send six delegates to the National Convention in Chicago this year. Thanksgiving baskets for the poor, and a children’s party. To increase understanding of their religion, speakers were invited in to discuss certain points, interesting to all. Secretary MATTIE ENGLISH Treasurer NELL BOWEN Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Leininger, lovingly called Uncle Ray and Auntie June, have spon¬ sored the group for fifteen years. J a n o r £ i 6 r a r a n s In its second year this group has been of valuable service to the Li¬ brary, serving at the desk during the lunch and dinner hour, shelving books, reading the shelves, filing cards, surveying the use of journals and keeping the news scrap¬ book up to date. Through their efforts book sales, and book reviews have been sponsored, making it possible for the library to replace old records, purchase new ones and accumulate funds for the purchase of a new record player. This year they sponsored a trip to the Natchez Pilgrimage enabling eight girls to visit that inter¬ esting old town. During the past year this group has pushed forward into the set of books which the National Foundation re¬ commends for its second year dis¬ cussions. Interesting highlights of this year’s meetings have been the visits by well-known New Orleans personali¬ ties who are Great Books Leaders: Mr. John Hall Jacobs, Director of City Libraries, Dr. Brendon Brown of Loyola Law School. m a Although there were plans to con¬ tinue the study of German this year, so great was the demand for French that the German Class was supplant¬ ed by a class in Conversational French. The Library purchased Henry Holt’s conversation records which were made to accompany the Leveque conversation course, and late in the fall the class got under way. 5.reai CDooDs Discussion MRS.
