Morton There is a cliche ' to the effect that man is not able to see the woods for the trees. Such could be our case, for we are so much wrapped up in our interests, work, and living at Charity Hospital and its School of Nurs¬ ing that perhaps we fail to observe the beauty, culture and other benefits of our surroundings here in the Crescent City. Therefore, the staff decided in this our 1950 CAPS and CAPES to use as our theme some phases representative of the City of New Orleans. Charity Hospital of New Orleans is located in Ameri¬ ca ' s Most Interesting City —New Orleans—the unique town located at the mouth of the majestic Mississippi in the very heart of the Deep South. The magnolia, our state flower, adorns the cover; our beauties represent the anti-bellum Southern belles; our students take part in the Spring Fiesta and the Mardi Gras. So pause for awhile with us, as we linger in the land where the sweet magnolias bloom. FOREWORD “When Time, who steals our years away, Shall steal our pleasures, too, The memory of the past will stay, And half our joys renew” Thomas Moore Within these treasured pages this book was given life. People, events and memories are crowded to¬ gether—all, a part of an unforgettable year. The Staff OUR SCHOOL The Charity Hospital School of Nursing was organized in 1894 by the Hospital Administrators and by the Sisters of Charity, who have been caring for the patients of this institution by governmental authorization since 1834. Since 1937 the School of Nursing has been affiliated with Louisiana State University to offer the degree course. The Charity Hospital School of Nursing is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing Examiners. In the 1949 Classification of Schools of Nursing by the National Committee for the Improvement of Nursing Service. Charity Hospital School of Nursing ranked among the top 25 per cent of nursing schools in the country. It is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Education for veteran training under the provisions of Public Law No. 346. - - MISS STELLA O ' CONNOR STUDENT ADVISOR DEDICATION Because she is such an understanding person, one who has shown unfailing interest in our many problems, we dedicate our 1950 CAPS AND CAPES to Miss Stella O ' Connor. She truly exemplifies our ideal as a student advisor. She holds our respect and appreciation as well as our love and admiration. APPRECIATION To Miss Laurence Bernard—who has been not only our teacher but our friend and associate as well—we express this apprecia¬ tion. Her entertaining personality and high principles and ideals have been, indeed, a stimulation to our professional and intellec¬ tual growth. • w v v . - ■ y jr GOVERNOR EARL K. ' The Chairman Accepts her lamp from Florence Nightingale —Capping Charity Celebrates the Mardi Gras Night in Old New Orleans”- Climax of the New Orleans Spring Fiesta Historical Sketch of Hospital In the year 1736 lhopital des pauvres de la charite” was established through the bequest of a sailor named Jean Louis. The structure, known as St. John ' s Hospital, is heralded as the original Charity Hospital of New Orleans and has been proved the oldest hospital in the United States. This building was replaced by a second hospital which was devasted by a hurri¬ cane in 1779 and rebuilt by the great philanthropist, Don Almonastery Roxas, a Spanish nobleman. An Act of the legislature of the year 1813 may be considered the incorporation of the Charity Hospital as an institution of the State of Louisiana. During the years that followed. New Orleans grew rapidly and it was not long before a larger and better equipped institution was needed. A new hospital referred to at the time “as a model of hospital architecture of the nineteenth century was built during the years 1832-1833. On the site of the century old structure the present Charity Hospital rose and was dedicated in 1939. The institution not only offers medical care to those in need, but stands as a great teaching center and affords great oppor¬ tunities for medical education. It is a state-owned, non-sectarian, general hospital with a bed capacity of 3,488. The daily average number of patients is 2,148. During the year 1948 51,968 patients were discharged after treat¬ ment and care was administered. In the same year 365,580 visits were made in the out-patient department. Close relationship with the Louisiana State University School of Medicine and the Tulane University School of Medicine renders it a center of scientific research and progress. The hospital also pro¬ vides experience for smaller schools of nursing which send their students for affiliation. . The Charity Hosoital of Louisiana is fully accredited by the American College of Surgeons and is approved by the Council on Education of the American Medical Association. Membership is held in the American Hospital Association and Louisiana Hospital Association. Through officers and representatives elected by the students themselves a student council is formed. At weekly meetings of this group governing rules and penalties are enforced by the council. General student body meetings are held monthly, when students are urged and encouraged to aid in formula¬ tion of plans and in expressing their opinions regarding any matter concern¬ ing their welfare and happiness. Aside from the immediate b enefits acquired from this system of self-government, students also develop a better under¬ standing of laws, penalties and responsibilities, which will likely prove the basis for better citizenship in later life.
