-• % Charity Hospital School of Nursing Within these pages we have attempted to present to you the highlights of our 1948-49 school year. Here at Charity, where we endeavored to prepare ourselves for our profession, we worked and played, studied and danced, slept through classes and crammed for exams and matured in our experiences. In trying to capture the true spirit of our school we hope we have captured those events which we will hold dear. For all the story-books you read: For all the pains you comforted: For all you pitied, all you bore, In sad and happy days of yore . . . Take, nurse, the little book you hold!” From “To Alison Cunningham from Her Boy’’ by Robert Louis Stevenson 2 Because she has aided materially in the solution of our seemingly insurmountable prob¬ lems in training and has inspired us to shou lder the responsibility entrusted to us and to demonstrate at all times the nobility of the nursing profession, we dedicate our 1949 Caps and Capes to Miss Mae Knobloch. She is a model of the true nurse—one who is loyal, kind, sympathetic, sincere, and has contributed immeasurably to the building of character, not only in students, but in womanhood in general. 3 EXECUTIVE STAFF on. STANLEY MORGAN We should like to express an appreciation to Dr. Stanley Morgan, who has willingly given his time and services to the students. He is an exceptional instructor and is always willing to take active part in our school activities. LET’S PAUSE . . . We pause to reflect on facts about the history of our School In 1894 our school was organized by the Hospital Administrators and by the Sisters of Charity, who have been caring for the patients of this institution by governmental authorization since 1834. Since 1937 the School of Nursing has been affiliated with Louisiana State Univer¬ sity to offer the degree course. Our present Nurses’ Home built in 1939 is considered one of the most beautiful in the States. Its enroll¬ ment in that year was 268 as compared to the present enrollment for 1949 of 352 three-year students, 38 anesthesia students, 108 affiliates, 3 supplementary course, 3 Operating Room tech¬ nique and 3 post-graduate students. The Charity Hospital School of Nursing is approved by the United Sta tes Public Health Service Division of Nursing for Cadet students, the Louisiana State Department of Education to accept Veter¬ an students, the Louisiana State Board of Nurse Examiners, and the United States Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service, to accept non-quota immigrant stu¬ dents. This past year has seen improvements about the building in the new weatherproofing, painting, recreational room, and new equipment for educational and recreational purposes. 1 i I 11 SENIORS_I OFFICERS FREDA BURNETT. C. mm SISTER STANISLAUS Angel of Mercy PRAYER FOR A NURSE Oh, My God: I am about to begin this day’s work. Teach me to receive the sick in thy name. Give to my efforts success, sweet Jesus, for the glory of Thy Holy Name. It is Thy work: Without Thee I cannot succeed. Grant that the sick Thou hast placed in my care may be abundantly blessed, and not one of them to be lost because of anything that is lacking in me. Help Thou me to overcome every temporal weak¬ ness and strengthen in me whatever may enable me to bring the sunshine of joy to the lives that are gathered round me day by day. Make me beautiful within for the sake of Thy sick ones and those lives which will be influenced by them. Amen. 79 OUR CONTRIBUTORS Maison Blanche Co. Surgical Supply Co.
