Yes, now we look back and recall Strange things that happened to us all, With some things great and some things small And some worth telling o’er and o’er. But hail dim past! Why worry more What the future has in store, To enjoy, or to deplore? Recall the times we’ve spent together Unmindful of the state of weather, With hearts as light as any feather ’Though sometimes punctured to the core Because of some misdeed or other Committed by a little brother, So sweetly tucked in by his mother While on the pediatric floor. Yes, trays did crash upon the floor While angel faces seemed to snore, Those tots, though sick, had pep galore. Then to obstetric wards we went And weeks with Mothers there we spent, ' Till to another service sent Although we really wanted more. At first we were a wee bit quiv’ry But gained in knowledge more and more. In infant feeding, on the sly (The cause we’ll never tell you why,) We drank sweet milk condensed, no lie, And added pounds, yes, more and more. Those frequent conf’rences with Sister; Miss Gillen left, we surely missed her; Then volumes read we on famed Lister Gaining knowledge o’er and o’er. To Forty-eight! that’s Isolation, While charting in the nurses’ station We faced mid-term examination. Oh! tell us truly, we explore How you our efforts can ignore, When we for mercy did implore We crave it ever more and more. Our skills in surgical technique At first seemed desperately weak, Till arms and hands were well nigh streaked From scrubbing them, yet more and more. We have survived those tests and trials Which ’rose in the Delgado—Miles From which we left with sincere smiles With longing to return to more E’en though our feet were tiresome, sore, And polished nails were then no more Our hands scrubbed red and raw all o’er. When on to Carville we did go Technique to learn and more to know, From Uncle Sam who is, you know, Protector at Lepr’sarium door. And so we left, the trip completing While on through Baton Rouge now eating, Then to La Place, the jute box beating, Throughout that day was fun galore For Seniors who were nigh footsore From dancing on a hardwood floor. But give us more, yes, more and more. With graduation day so near We’ll soon be leaving you all here, But these fond memories will cheer Yes, cheer our hearts for ever more! As we do bid our last farewell Our very hearts begin to swell; Our loyalty no words can tell. But through the years we’ll love you more And our memories we’ll store Deep in our hearts forevermore. Lucille Champagne, ’41 19 4 1 CAPS AND CAPES 19 4 1 CAPS AND CAPES FLASH: S. S. Charity Missing At Sea June 12,—New York, N. Y. The majestic ship, S.S. Charity, left Frisco Harbor on the evening of June 4 for a pleasure cruise along the picturesque islands of the Pacific. On its passenger list are names of outstanding individuals, the major¬ ity of whom had recently attended a three- year course in Nursing Education at New Orleans. The last radio message received from the S.S. Charity located her at latitude 15° south by southwest—longitude 165° west by northwest. At that time a storm was anticipated from the southwest, and Captain M. J. Stuart reported that the Charity would endeavor to land at some likely port. Within thirty minutes, radio operators were unable to secure any further response. The following represents the passenger list: Helen Worth, efficient office nurse to Dr. W. E. Cuttem; Frances Waters, popu¬ lar private duty nurse among the wealthy of Florida; Martha Dunn, much loved super¬ visor on Colored Pediatrics at Charity Hos¬ pital of New Orleans; Clifford Reynolds, head nurse on Bar None Ranch in Southwest Texas; Sidonie Thevenet, Famous Powers ' Model of 1941; Cathleen Hutcheson, post¬ graduate student in Obstetrics at New York General Hospital; Ollie Keating, institu¬ tional nurse in the Jackson Mississippi Or¬ phanage; Anna Thibodeaux, successor of Zazu Pitts of movie fame; Dr. James C. It is earnestly hoped that the passengers are safe somewhere in the Pacific, lounging on a sil¬ ver beach ’neath a tropical moon and listen¬ ing to the lullaby of the rustling palms. 19 4 1 CAPS AND CAPES 19 4 1 Favorites - CAPS AND CAPES -■- SWEETHEARTS OF CHARITY RUBY AND FLORENE BARRON 1 19 4 1 COURT OF BEAUTY CAPS AND CAPES DOROTHY BREAUX , •? We’ll be able to do so many things now, be¬ cause we have the nucleus of a school fund. I hope this is the first of a long line of fiestas at Charity. Thanks to every super¬ visor, staff nurse, and student for making our first fiesta so success¬ ful. DECEMBER 19 What a grand time we had at our Christmas Party tonight! The pre-clinicals took us back to our younger days by showing real, live dolls from Santa’s workshop. The thrill of the evening was to hear Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” over the new radio-vic- trola which the Sisters gave us. 19 4 1 CAPS AND CAPES JANUARY 16 At last, that longed-for trip to Carville! How privileged we were to be able to visit the Na¬ tional Leprosarium, which is situ¬ ated some 50 miles from the Crescent City. Indeed, the U. S. Marine Hospital at Carville is a miniature world; within which live those patients who seek physical care, spiritual comfort, and emotional protection in the bearing of their affliction. En route home we went through the Capitol, and saw other points of interest in Baton Rouge. Once back at Charity, we congregated at the main gate of our home and sang our theme song. Our fellow-students from within the building joined us in the sing¬ ing of Alma Mater. January 16! Oh, what a memorable day! MARCH 23 Seniors, though I am one of your group, I am proud of you. And the nurse’s work Was done for another day! She heaved a sort of tired sigh And put the charts away. Then sat for a moment and bowed her head Over the little white desk-—- I wonder,” said she to herself, after all, Am I really doing my best?” Perhaps I could have begun the day With a brighter, cheerier smile, And answered the lights with— ' Right away’ Instead of ' After a while. ’ ” And I might have listened with sweeter grace To the story of Six’s woes; She may be suffering more, perhaps, More than anyone knows.” And I might have refrained from the half-way frown, Although I was busy then, When the frail little girl, with sad blue eyes, Kept flashing again and again.” And I might have spoken a kindlier word, To the heart of that restless boy, And stopped a moment to help him find The missing part of his toy.” Or perhaps the patient in Eighteen A, Just needed a gentler touch; There are a lot of things I might have done And it wouldn’t have taken much.” She sighed again and brushed a tear, Then whispered,—praying low, My God, how can You accept this day, When it has been lacking so?” And God looked down—He heard the sigh, He saw that shining tear; Then sent His Angel Messenger To whisper in her ear, . . . You could have done better today, But, oh! the Omnipotent One, Seeing your faults, does not forget, The beautiful things you have done.” He knows, little nurse, that you love your work In this house of pain and sorrow, So gladly forgives the lack of today, For you will do better tomorrow.” The nurse looked up with a grateful smile, Tomorrow I’ll make it right”; Then added a note in the order book, Be good to them tonight.” 19 4 1 ' t ' Y 3 ? mS CAPS AND CAPES 19 4 1 See Us When in Need of Nursing Textbooks (All Publishers) J.
