MELLINGER Q With sincere gratitude for her efforts on behalf of all the students at Chardon High School the Yearbook Staff of 1959-60 hereby dedicates this yearbook to Miss Ethel Mellinger. Her pleasant attitude and personal warmth which have supplemented her unstinted devotion to her guidance work, have gained for her a great deal of respect and many friends. lt is this combination of qualities which gives Chardon High School a person deserving of its honor and esteem. Miss Ethel Mellinger can always find time to help those stu- dents who wish to adjust their schedules, talk about their vocations, or discuss the choice of a college. ost pring The 1959 spring season brought many social as well as athletic and cultural events to Chardon High School. Golf clubs were broken as well as track rec- ords. Our interest in drama and music was stimu- lated in the form of plays and contests. Prom-bound iuniors and seniors whirled through a Southern Garden, Mrs. Thrasher noted a record number of check outs when balmy weather finally reached Chardon, and of course our seniors left to pursue their chosen professions or to enroll in college. Yes, it was a gala spring season that ended too soon for most of us and gave way to summer. . MN. M N m -wiik' 1 -.4-J 1 SEHK!! 2 fi A-'T af Q QW Sw? Q F-L wx .ix W 'e' -., X - Wxf ...Q -MN Q x Q . C.H.S. Honor Students lun frvs Valedictoria MARY ANN PRICE 1959 VALEDICTORIAN ln iust a few moments we will be official graduates of Chardon High School. As we become alumni we can look back on four wonderful years of work, fun, and growing up. We also look forward to the future, where we must put to good use those things which we have learned in order to succeed. l heard a quotation from Fulton J. Sheen's book, Life ls Worth Living, that l would like to pass on to all of you. He has this to say about living your life: 'If you walk facing the sun, all your shadows will fall behind you, it is only when you turn your back to the sun that your pathway is darkened.' l think this is good advice for all of us, not only for us who graduate, but also for you, our parents and friends, and for those of you who will remain behind us in school. If each of us will make God our sun, and if we will strive always to walk facing this Sun, then your lives should be filled with the bright lights of happiness and success. A final word to my classmates-leave Chardon High School with the knowledge that you possess the tools with which to be a success, it is up to you to select the right tool for the right iob. Good luck, and God bless you. n Speaks For Class ol i959 In Memoriam Chardon High School pays tribute to the memory of Richard Durai. Dick, who was a member of the 1960 grad- uating class, lost his life in a tragic swimming accident dur- ing the summer of 1959. He was a young man of deep conviction and steadfast determination. His faith in his own ability drove him to high achievement despite any obstacle. Sickness during his earlier youth made athletic prowess unlikely, but Dick's burning desire and refusal to surrender to the odds against him gained for him a place on the track team. The same qualities would, in all likelihood, have put him on the football squad in his senior year. Dick's ability to set his sights on a definite goal made him the champion magazine salesman during his iunior year and gave him a coveted role in the iunior play. Yet he had also the rare ability to share a laugh at his own expense. Our lives are richer for his having passed our way. The Trophy's Ours! ilu.-Q,-emma Members of the 1959 girls baseball team are First Row: Young and Johnnie Strainic, mascots. Second Row: Michelle Woollams, Sandy Davidson, Penny Haeuter, Karen Donohoe, Linda Young. Third Row: Cathy Rayl, Jean Mansfield, Judy Fenwick, Mary Ann Price, and Pat Strainic lhiddenj. Fourth Row: Janice Thompson, Peg Fina, Gail Reiter, Jo Ann Rummel, Pat Haeuter. Fifth Row: Mary Ann Bundza, Nancy Steingass, Kay Wollpert, Barb Nozar. Sixth Row: Mr. John Strainic, and Mr. Robert Young. The Chardon Girls' Softball Team was started in the summer of 1959 by Mr. John Strainic. Any high school girl was eligible, including those of the 1959 graduating class. Chardon's team competed twice with each of the five other league teams and came out on top of the league with nine wins and one loss. Each girl was awarded a trophy, and a trophy was also presented Chardon High School. A non-league loss was had by the team when the Chardon Ja- cees and Junior Chamber of Commerce defeated them on July 4. aculiy Chardon High School is justifiably proud of her teaching staff of capable men and women. Whether over a term paper, at the board, inspecting a problem, or entering into discussion, the personality of a student is greatly af- fected morally, emotionally, and spiritually by the character of his instructor. The second side of faculty members' capabilities is pointed out in their participation in school-sponsored activities. By working at the sides of their teachers, Chardon's students develop a firm understand- ing of their educators. 'V 21 v 4 N N :Q 3368 ak , Y L, S . H S ix ...X ish R 54 -is S. N N-Q-.4 in .- VN . Thanks to thes people. eniors The senior year is unquestionably the most exciting, fun-filled, and uncertain year of any stu- dent's secondary education. Ambitions are feared to overstep abilities, expectations sadly crowd out memories, and the correct choice of vocation is doubtful. During the current school year, two new policies were adopted in connection with the Hilltop Echo. Q8 See the Basket, See the Ball . . . We're counting on you Elaine. Make if Maggie' x t be-. ,.,- ports Whether it's a football spiralling over the goalpost or a basket- ball dancing around its hoop, sports never fail to excite Chardon fans. Enthusiastic spectators, breathless cheerleaders, calculating coaches, and determined players typify most Friday evenings during Chardon's sports' seasons. Team spirit is that which is learned by all who truly take interest in the progress of the team, yet it is not bolstered or deflated by the number of wins or losses. Competition is the way of America, and what better depicts this than the playing of our national anthem before the start of a game. Regardless of team loyality, all share equally the thrill of the crisp evening, the clear notes of music, the sense of excitement, and the pride of the tri - colored flag waving its red, white, and blue for all to see. After a shaky start, the Hilltoppers be finding the spark as the season progressed wound up with 4 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties which sented them a fourth place berth in the league sh ings. The Hilltoppers were determined to have a ning season in 1959. Many of the boys worked oi. their own during summer vacation and were ious for the season to get under way. Organ practice began three weeks before the preview Madison, with full practice twice a day and eral pre-season scrimmages. This hard work pc off by creating a minimum of injuries. The spirit optimism of the pre-season was slightly garnishei two early defeats, but prevailed in a very stu finish. The Toppers chalked up 130 points, v allowing 92 to opponents. Many of this year's derclassman players got much experience and are 'eady planning an even more successful season mn that of 1959. Good luck, Chardon's future gridders. This year Chardon placed several players on e annual All Western Reserve League Team. Those receiving first team berths are John sill, senior tackle, Emery Dilda, senior guard, orth Wollpert, iunior encl, and Joe Huxel, iunior arterback. Honorable mentions were awarded to m Davis, senior guard, Dennis Love, senior guard, enn Grant, senior fullback, and Keith Newberry, iior center. Future Gridders Take the Field Forty-eight 7th, 8th, and 9th graders reported for the first practice early in September. They had six games ahead of them which meant plenty of hard work'at practice sessions. The 7th graders had the majority of the team members which num- bered 20. They were Jack Carson, Allan McBride, David Morse, Robert Koritansky, Philip Johnston, Robert Flaherty, Barry Hall, Tom Thayer, Larry Diemond, Greg Smith, Bob Heinrich, Marvin Hostetler, John Collier, Ed Betzer, Doug Metcalfe, Tom Judge, Larry Klingemeir, Bob Keyes, Morris Potter, and Richard Walfe. The eighth grade team members were Charles Porter, Mike Fisher, Dave Holloran, Bob Poloski, Keith Mishne, Nelson Nemec, John Carmigiano, Bob Grant, Gary Farin- acci, Paul Davis, Bob Rayl, Gordon McDonald, and Paul Miller. The freshmen, earning the maiority of the team positions were Jim Haueter, Russell Greve, Lloyd Davis, Marion Horne, Gordon Phipps, Jack Burger, Dan Burke, Jeff John- son, Vic Dilda, Gary Hummel, Leonard Feckner, Iver Szany, Les Ash, Eric Kulp, and George Bradley. In the Troians' first game with Riverside, the team was defeated by a better team 44-0. By the next week, the offensive and defensive line play had improved, but because of weak pass defense and many costly fumbles, Eastlake won 28-0. Still showing improvement and the much-needed asset of spirit, the offense started clicking at the game with Kirtland. Three mistakes on end plays allowed the Hornets to score three touchdowns on wide goal sweeps for a total of 20 points. The Troians' game with Burton resulted in a scoreless tie after a well-fought battle. In the last game of the season with Madison, Chardon got underway in the second period with Marion Horne's two touchdowns- one a 65-yard run, and Leonard Feck- ner's crash through the line in the fourth period to make the final score, Chardon T8- Madison 0.
