WEST GEAUGA 14-CHARDON 13 Chardon dropped its independent opener to West Geauga 14-13. Early in the game Jack McDonald returned a kick-off for 70 yards and a T.D. and later in the third quarter Frank Vitonis tallied on a 60 yard sprint for the second and final score. Chuck Bender converted. 'X EDGEWOOD O-CHARDON 27 A tough Chardon defence held the Edgewood Bull- dogs scoreless as the Hilltoppers notched their first XVRL victory. Highlights of the evening were a 54 yard TD run by jack McDonald and a 20 yard jaunt by Charles Bender. Minutes before the half Don Davis also scored. SPENCER 0 -- CHARDON 30 Jack McDonald put Chardon in the lead early in the game as Sam Rayl and he combined on a 24 yard TD pass. Ted Young galloped 41 yards for the second Chardon score early in the second half. McDonald scored again on a 5 yard plunge after broken field running to set up the TD. The final score of the third period came as Bob Hummel sprinted 28 yards. The final score of the game came as Bill Phillips caught a 15 yard aerial from Frank Vitonis and scampered the remaining 12 yards to the goal. PERRY 25--CHARDON 6 Fumbles gave the tough Perry Pirates a 25-6 victory over the Hilltoppers. jack McDonald, Chardon's Captain thrilled the home fans as he took the open- ing kick-off 88 yards to the three yard line. Don Davis carried the ball over. Several injuries re- sulted from the game. Ted Young received a leg injury to keep him out the rest of the season, and Ted Haueter and Bob Neill received minor injuries. CHARDON 26 - MADISON 7 Chardon got underway in the second period as Sam Rayl uncorked a beautiful pass to Ed Wfingen- bach for 48 yards and the first TD. Chuck Bender converted. Rayl's passes to .lack McDonald were good as the Hilltoppers scored twice on 45 and 35 yard TD combinations. McDonald ran the 2nd point. The final TD was scored by a 15 yard plunge by Charles Bender. CHARON 26 -- KIRTLAND 0 Chardon outplayed their opponents and gained a third share in the XVRI. lead with Perry and Harbor, as they trounced the Hornets 26-O. .lack McDonald made the first score of the game on a three yard plunge. Later in the first period. quarterback Sam Rayl scored after recovering a Kirtland fumble and racing 58 yards for the TD. Rayl also ran the point. Chuck Bender ended the half by scoring on a 4 yard plunge. jack McDonald plunged through the line for 16 yards and his second TD in the third period. Morgan ran the extra point. jEFFERSON S -CHARDON 6 Chardon's fumbles set up the only TD for the Fal- cons and poor defence helped them get a safety. Chardon's only TD came late in the third period as jack McDonald plunged 22 yards for the score. CHARDON 7-RIVERSIDE 13 In the mud and cold the Hilltoppers were defeated at Riverside in an independent tilt. The Hill- toppers only score came early in the game as Chuck Bender carried the ball over after Bill Phillips carried to the one yard line. Jack McDonald ran the extra point. CHARDON 25-HARBOR 47 Jack McDonald starred in a hard-fought game scoring three TD's and throwing a pass for the fourth.
