This was an exciting game and it was very close until the last quarter when Bob Ashba broke the 6-6 tie with a 25 yard run to put Chardon ahead. X I I J CONGRATULATIONS to the 1956 Chardon High football squad. With their record of 5 wins-3 losses-1 tie, they took second place in the Western Reserve League. This is the best record Chardon has had in the last five years. X X WEST GEAUGA 0 - CHARDON 46 Chardon High started its football season with a smashing victory over West. And from the way the record looks, it seems everyone had his chance to make a touchdown and nearly everyone did! g . PERRY 18-CHARDON 12 Chardon, going strong with two W.R.L. wins behind them, met with defeat against Perry. George Carver and jack McDonald came through with 'the two touchdowns but the 'team coulclrft break through Perry's line for the winning points. Ag psi ,V if 7 Y kc. , at I 1 KIRTLAND O-CHARDON 6 Wfith a strong line and a strong spirit Chardon held Kirtland to a zero score. Tom Rep scored on a hand-out from Bob Ashba in the fourth quarter. GENEVA SPENCER 7-CHARDON 32 The Hilltoppers took an early advantage of the Falcons fumbles in the first period and between Jack McDonald and Bob Ashba three touchdowns were scored. Another TD. was made in the second period and the final one was put across in the fourth quarter After the first period Chardon lost the services of Bob Ashba, the leading ground gainer. Bob was hit in the head and was too dazed to play. MADISON 7-CHARDON 7 Homecoming game-1956 and Chardon has its only tie game. jack McDonald, catching a pass from Bob Ashba, scored for the one touchdown. Bob Ashba was back in the game, still not quite re- covered from the Spencer jolt - but trying. Bill Lytle, Captain, was running with the Hilltoppers for the first time. Bill was injured in practice be- fore the first game and was just now able to play. George Carver was Captain pro tem while Bill was absent. HARBOR 34-CHARDON 6 Harbor came to Chardon ready to fight to keep their record undefeated and took the lead 14-0 at the end of the first half. During the half time show of Dads' night all the fathers were introduced. Ash- tabula came rolling on the field after the half and never stopped until they had scored 20 points in the third quarter. Chardon finally rallied to score in the fourth period. Thus Ashtabula won the W'.R.L. championship. Before the game it was learned that Bob Ashba had received a fractured disc earlier in the season and will be unable to play again this year. Also David Sulc having injured his fingers at his job was limited to the amount of play for the game. the JEFFERSON O-CHARDON 24 For the last XVestern Reserve league game Chardon put up a grand show and came out victors. In the second quarter Jack McDonald scored and during the fourth quarter Frank Vitonis, Chuck Bender and Bill Lytle rolled up 18 points for our victory. ASHTABULA ST. JOHNS 13-CHARDON 6 In the last game of the season Chardon was held to a defeat by a fairly new team. The Hill- toppers remained scoreless until the third quarter when jack McDonald tallied the only touchdown. The Western Reserve League All League team was well repre- hononeo sented by Chardon. The team, picked by coaches and league officials, chose four players from Chardon. Senior end, George Carver, was chosen for the first team, senior center, Dave Sulc, was chosen for the second team. Senior half-back, Bob Ashba. and senior tackle, Paul Stone, received Honorable Mention. EL EE A At every game, rain or shine, the Cheerleaders are always there - cheering the team on. The team's success will hinge chiefly on the strength of the pitching staff headed by Robert Ashba.
