Within five hours of leaving in our atomic-powered, jet- propelled plane, we are told by pilot Ray Gannoe that we are approaching the great metro- polis of New London. A pretty air hostess who tells us to fasten our safety belts, turns out to be Regina Brodaski. We strain our necks to get a view of our landing and we see ap- proaching airways of Haglund and Dunn. We also notice the architectural engineering on the buildings of Williams and the aeronautical engineering jobs by Santo lrlandi. As we stretch our legs by walking about the field, we recognize Pop DeGray, foreman of the Fialkosky 6 Kaplan Construction Company, telling Hal Gaiheral, Carl Cecchini, and Les Lewis to make with the shovel. They are probably building a new airway. We hail a cab driven by Don Lloyd and proceed Techwards. Our ears are filled by the marching strains of Fred Barberi's boys with our single female Ioyce Beebe. Out front are some tricky baton majorettes taught by Louise Lake and Vilma Cinotti. Running up and down taking pictures is ace photographer, Bill Doucette now employed by the editor of the New London Day, Frank Muscarella. Direct- ing traffic is city policeman, Walt Smolenski. Looking about us we spy the name Harold Traver, Attorney at Law painted on an office window, and Barbara's Beauty Salon owned and operated by Barbara Greenlaw, assisted by Lorraine Peltier and Flo Cilley. Peering out of the window at us are Elsie Silva and Toni DeCarlo, having their nails and hair done. ln a next-door window is the name Constance Lyle, now a surgical doctor, who has for her nurse Margaret Bigney. Peeping in a store window for the present feminine styles, we see Terry Cattalani and Nancy Pedro waiting on Mary Wilkinson, Leone MacLaren, and Claire Doane, who insist on the latest fashions. On the upper floor is Louise Groppelli's Lingerie Shop managed by Dot Reed. Coming out of a building we see a little boy with sheets of music, one of Iennie Cabral's accordion pupils. We follow the band Techward and we hear lustrous yells of the football game coached and managed by Pat Canamella and Ioe Machado re- spectively. ln the bleachers, rooting for their Alma Mater, we spot Dick Shargus, Ken Perry, and Larry Pompea, who do all but get out on the field. On the sidelines are the forever S. S. G. standbys, gossiping about their troubles. Turning our eyes from the spectacular plays we de- light at the sight of Tech's beautiful, long-desired gym, for we are told that the money was donated by Maynard, McKinney and Tillet, wealthy men about town. ln the gym practicing for our coming successful season is our new Varsity team under the supervision of Lou Hoch- man and Walt Olson. Next door, running about in our child care playground, are the little darlings of Beverly O'Connor, Camella Savona and Dolores Scaletti, carefully watched by Lee Giardina and Barbara Kathe. Paying them a visit is Ioan Hart, who proudly tells of her well-behaved little Iohnny. Going inside the hall of Tech we hear the clicking typewriters of lane Turley and Doris Rolfe. We stop to read the Alumni Bulletin and read of the well-established careers of Medi- cal Missionary Marjorie Davison, Artist lrving Beckenstein and farmer Bob Broga who now has twenty-four cows. Upstairs in our beautiful auditorium a crowd gathers for the presentation of a new play written by Leo Rocco, co-starring Elsie Hendrickson and Kent Banning and presented by the well-known producer Edward Dittman, who all do a fine job, say critics Cecelia Morgan and Nelson Criuse, not to mention the work of stage manager loe Harrington and helper Paul Rouisse, Costume designers Cecilia Popiolek and Evelyn Mac Kenzie and makeup artist Irene Days. At the end of the play we are invited to the exclusive T. N. T. now owned and operated by Penny Traggis. We are waited on by a pretty waitress Lorraine Higgins, as the other waitresses Honey Alferi, Dot Pulaski and Rita Doiron wait on faithful patrons Corrinne Seluskey and Shirley Lewis. In the kitchen is chef Gino Minucci making his favorite spa- ghetti. The record playing on their television radio is a number by Ray Duranti's orchestra which has now succeeded Harry Iames. We recognize the vocalist as Arlene Pollard singing one of song writer Mike DeLillo's latest hits. It is followed by a spech straight from the capitol by Sam Gang, president of the United States We depart after our meal and sign in at the Hotel Long, named after its owner Dave Long, and there we retire until the Alumni Ball in the evening. W Page One Hundred Lunch Hour Rush Smiling Secretcrry's FEATURES THE SENIDIQ CLASS DLAY urqadenic and UH face Cn the evenings of December l3 and l4 the Senior class presented its version of lo- seph Kesselring's prize comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. Among the cast was Edward Dittrnan as the Reverend Dr. Harper, with Barbara Greenlaw and Cecelia Morgan as the two daffy aunts, Abby and Martha. limmy Robertson gave a most talented performance of Teddy, the nut of the household. Elaine, Dr. Harper's young daughter, who had the horrifying habit of jumping over tombstones, was portrayed by Elsie Hendrickson. lonathan, the Boris Karloff of the whole affair, was played perfectly by William DeCfray, who took the part over a week before the performances. Following him around was Dr. Einstein, played by lohn Basilica. Mortimer, the object of Elaine's desires, was por- trayed by Kent Banning. O'Hara, the policeman who always came in at the wrong time, was Bay Gannoe. His colleagues, Klein, Brophy, and Booney, were played by Graham Williams, Edward Eialkowski, and Walter Smolen- ski. A superb job of direction was done by Edith Dahlgren. Properties were handled by Cecelia Popeolek. Costumes by Miss Elizabeth True and Miss Edith Shuster. loseph Harrington and Paul Bousse put the set together, and Sam Gang took care of the Publicity. Page One Hundred Eight ULFH-H13 FQDQTJUESZAALE SEESSED Upon the resignation of lack Conway as football coach, the job was given to Thomas Flanagan and his assistant, Harlan Sturgis. ln the first grid classic, the Huskies took on the Alumni and were set back on the short end of an 18-O score. loe Paskewich scored all three tallies. One was a hundred and five yarder. Pat Cannamela, Captain, and Ken Perry were outstanding on the defense. Next, we journeyed to Norwich but to no avail for we were trounced 48-O. Again Pat Cannamela and Ken Perry were stars. Our next contest was with Windham, which resulted in a 33-6 victory by the Techmen. Touchdowns were by Bailey and Pezzello in the first period. In the following period Bailey scored on a left end run and Longo bucked over for the fourth tally. Cannarnela converted two out of four. In the third Quarter, Schargus plunged over and Rossi converted to end the day's scoring. Fitch was the site of the next game with Tech winning 21-13. Two touchdowns by Rossi, one by Schargus and three conversions by Cannarnela marked the scoring. On a daring run that disabled him for the rest of the year Dick Schargus made the winning touchdown on a 75 yard run around right end. Mal Browne scored the other on a pass from Don Rossi. Pat converted one. Bouquets to Schargus and Cannamela. Kicking by Cannamela and the pass combo of Rossi to Pezzello told the story of the Weaver game as Tech won 14-6. In the second and third quarters passes from Rossi to Pez- zello gave Tech their two tallies, each good for 35 yards. Cannamela again converted. Next game was with our home town rivals, the Bulkeley Tigers, at Mercer Field. After fighting hard for three periods to a O-U deadlock, Bub Burke cracked over from the twenty yard line to score Bulkeley's lone and winning tally. Cannamela in his final game under the Tech colors was the shining Light of both teams. Tech was well represented on the all-conference team by Captain Pat Cannamela, a unanimous choice, Tony Annibalini, Iim Pezzello, and Donald Rossi. Though the Huskies will undoubtedly feel the loss of a star like Cannamela they will bounce back and give all comers a fight for any game. Best wishes. Page One Hundred Nine I SRE? Paqe One Hundred Ten 1 1 BASKETBALL 1946-47 After a successful year in football, Chapman Tech turned to basketball once again under the able direction of Fedele Mugavero. Tech was the Dark Horse of the conference and with only three lettermen returning Dates had to work hard to fashion a basketball team out of sixteen rookies. Iohn Brennan and Donald Stefanski, captain, were to be the forward wall. At the pivot post was tall, slim Don Chandler. Bay Vescovi and Thomas Fabrikiewicz were chosen to defend the back court. Bob Olsen was number six. The first game was with Bacon Academy, of Colchester, tumbling before the Techmen, 30-16. With nine points apiece lohn Brennan acl Don Chandler paced the Huskies. Next was Putnam Tech. We lost in the last mniute and half, 55-50. Once more Chandler and Brennan set the pace tallying 18 and 17 points respectfully. Traveling across the Thames, Tech next encountered B. E. Fitch of Groton and came back with a victory, 45-37. Brennan was high scorer with nineteen points. ln the preliminary Tech also won with the 1.V.'s, 47-28. Pitch came here next and was set back 40-32. With 18 points individual honors went to Don Chandler. The Tech Frosh lost their opener, 19-17. N.F.A. defaulted the next game to Tech, 2-0. Next came Bulkeley, and we lost 52-32. George Bishara was high scorer for Tech in his first appearance with 8 points. 26-21 told the story of the Frosh game with the Tiger Frosh winning. Snapping out of his slump Don Chandler came back to score 29 points against the Stonington Bears on their court, but Stonington still won 66-48. ln the preliminary the Frosh won their first game, 24-19. Stonington came here next and went home with another victory in their pocket, 76-57. Chandler and Brennan were high scorers with 21 and 13 points in that order. The Tech 1.V.'s, led by Ouarto, won from the preliminary. Set shots told the story of the next game at Windham as they beat Tech 49-35. Don Chandler was again high scorer with 19 points. The Tech Frosh were trounced in the pre- liminary by the Whippets, 48-25. The Y.M.C.A. was the scene for the next with N.F,A. Piling up 56 tallies the Wildcats were tops as the Huskies compiled only 34 pooints. Robert Olsen, Sophomore star, was high with 11 points. Slim Don Chandler was next with 10. The Tech Frosh beat the Norwich Frosh, 25-24. Windham came down to the Y next andwon 57-46. Chandler, Stetanski and Brennan were high scorers, each hitting double figures with 12, 15, 10 points respectively. With more experienced men coming back next year, we foresee Chapman Tech as pos- sibel champs. Good Luck! Page One Hundred Thirteen BASEBALL 19415 With spring in the air the Huskies dusted off their playing gloves and commenced baseball practice under the guiding hand of Iohn T. Conway. Tech had seven lettermen returning to play one of the toughest schedules. Lou Bishara, captain of the squad, was to be the new catcher after being converted from first. Hyde Harmon was to assume pitching duties. Dan Horan was to be first sacker, only to give way to Frosh Bill Riordan. Rookies Harold Gatheral and Ray Vescovi were chosen for second and third respec- tively. Austin Dorr was Top shortstop. Bay Loughman, Bill Nott, Pat Cannamela, Don Rossi, and Tom Fabrikiewicz were to round out the team. ln the first game the Huskies defeated an experienced Alumni nine 4-U. Hyde Harmon hurled a five hitter and was backed by his teammates with perfect fielding. The next game was against the Fitch Tanagers at Morgan Park. The Canines won l2-5. Ray Vescovi and Lou Bishara starred, getting five hits and six R.B.l.'s between them. Lou got a four bagger. The next game was on a rainy day at Morgan Park. The Stonington Bears stopped the Huskies on a five hit performance. Pat Cannamela starred by stopping a Bear from getting a home run with a sensational one handed catch and knocking in the only two runs of the day. In the following game our local rivals stopped us on the short end of a 5-2 score. Iohn Bosko had a pitching duel with Hyde Harmon. Bill Biordan was star of the day getting two hits for three trips to the plate. Iourneying to the home of the Windham Whippetts on the next Wednesday resulted in another setback 7-3. Hyde Harmon was the leading Husky, getting a home run and knocking in the only three runs. The Huskies then journeyed across the Thames to play Fitch Tanagers and broke back into the win column scoring a 9-3 victory. Pat Cannamela and Lou Bishara starred, each getting two hits for three at bats and driving in six runs. Lou Bishara pitched a beautiful five hitter. The Whippetts came down to New London to play Tech next and set them back on their heels 6-3 on a five hitter by Howie Oldershaw. With two men on two Huskies came up to the plate and went back to the dugout on strikes. This proved lack Conway's point that you can't score without swinging. Pat Cannamela again starred by making another spectacular catch. N.F.A. was next on the list and they drubbed Tech on the two hit pitching of Tony West 7-l. Bill Nott was the star of the game, getting one of the two hits and driving in the only run. The Conway men then journeyed to the Bose City only to be defeated by Tony West and the Wildcats 4 to l. Lou Bishara was the shining light in this game. The next game was with our local rivals, the Bulkeley Tigers. Going into ninth inning, Tech led l to O. George Pugsley walked. Tommy Daniels hit a foul ball that Biordan misjudged that if caught would have ended the gamep but on the next pitch he smashed a triple into right field, where Buster Cannamela made a frantic attempt to snag the ball. Gottwalt then bunted to squeeze Daniels home. Tech has six letter men returning who, if they are not nipped in the bud, will probably make us a contender for the conference championship. Good Luck! IES SEASQ Upon the resignation of Herb Hendrickson. Track Coach 1943-1945, the Huskies were taken under the guidance of Fidele Dates Mugavero. Working with a semi-green squad Dates fash- ioned them into a determined team. For their first meet the Techmen traveled to Stonington only to be upset 51M to 495, being nosed out in the relay. johnny Gentilella, Bob Gilmore, and Spence Lancaster paced the Huskies each compiling 9, 9M, and 9 points respectively. With a three point lead going into the final event of the meet the Huskies lost out in the 440 yard relay, when they were edged out by a matter of yards. The next meet was the Triangle Meet among Tech, N.F..1-X., and Bulkeley held at Norwich. The Wildcats came out on top with 41 points, Bulkeley second with 31 points, and Tech last with 27 points. Iohn Gentilella, scoring first in the mile and second in the half mile, and Curt Shellman, scoring first in the 220 yard dash, led the Huskies with 8 points and 5 points respectively. After losing two meets in a row the Techmen journeyed across the river determined to win. The Fitch Tanagers turned out to be no opponents for the Huskies and were trounced 64M to 25M. johnny Gentilella placed first in the mile and first in the half mile, and Torn McCarthy, placing first in the broad jump, second in the mile and half mile events, lead the Tech cause with 10 and ll points respectively. The Eastern Connecticut Conference Meet was next. lt was held at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., with Tech, Bulkeley, Stonington, Fitch, and N.F.A. competing. N .F.A. received top honors adding a total of 40M points. Bulkeley was second with 37 points, Chapman Tech third with 25M points, Stonington was fourth with 20 points and Robert Fitch was last with only 9 points. lndividual scoring honors for Tech went to johnny Gentilella and Dick Schargus with a total of 8 points apiece. Dates then took johnny Gentilella, our ace miler, down to the State Outdoor Meet at Yale Field in New Haven, Conn., where he broke the school record with a 4:36 mile finish- ing first and twenty yards ahead of his nearest rival. The next meet was with the local rivals renewing the Canine-Feline rivalry down through the centuries. The Tech Huskies scored an overwhelming upset against the Bulkeley Tigers by a score of 57 to 42. The Huskies were again paced by lohn Gentilella, Dick Schargus, and Spence Lancaster scoring 10 points, first in the mile, first in the half mile, 13 points, first in the discus, javelin, and second in the shot put, and 9 points for a first in the broad jump and a tie for first in the 100 yard dash, respectively. lohn Gentilella broke the school record for the half mile, set by Ed Cruise in 1924. Iohn's time was 2.06, chopping 2.2. seconds off the record. Spence Lancaster broke his own record in the broad jump, which he had set the pre- vious year, with a jump of 21 feet 9M inches. Tech then took lohn Gentilella, Spence Lancaster, Dick Schargus, Curt Shellman, and Bob Hajosy to the New England Track Meet at Providence, R. I. Gentilella took a second in the mile and Schargus took a fourth place in the javelin throw for a total of 5 points. Gentilella, Lancaster, Gilmore, and our other stars have left, always leaving behind them their true school spirit, and always showing on the field true sportsmanship.
