A true comrade and gentleman, Ty proved to us his sterling character and stellar qualities. Ty practiced true sportsmanship in everything he did, in class, in school, and in outside activities he was the same. Play- ing the game the right Way meant much to him. His time upon this earth was short, however, and on a brisk October day Ty left us to join another group ot friends who knew and loved him. Among the original incorporators of Chapman Technical High School in 1903 was Alfred Coit. Elected secretary and treasurer of the board at that time, he has held office continually and has given without stint of his time and effort to promote the interests of the school and the Welfare of the student body. A native of this city, Iudge Coit has served variously as a member of the school board, as a judge of the probate court for this district, and as a leader in community activities since his graduation from Yale in 1887. The fact tht he did not attend Chapman Techincal High School, with which he is so closely allied, is explained when We learn that the school was not in existence at the time he was preparing for college. Judge Coit is a director of the Union Bank and Trust Company, and the president of that company since 1925. He is a Trustee of the Savings Bank of New London and a Vice President of that institution since 1922. For many years he has acted in a legal capacity for both banks. He is a Trustee of the local hospital and is secretary and treasurer of the Manwaring Hospital board. He is a member of the Ariston Club, the Rotary Club, is an active Church member, and a leader in the work of social agencies for the im- provement of the city. Page Six ATION FGREWORD E, the staff of the l946 Torch, herewith present to the student body and the world at large-the 8th Volume of the Chapman Technical High School Annual, the Torch . The high standard set by past volumes was not easy to at- tain, yet profiting from the experiences of our predecessors, we hope to have surpassed them. It has been our aim to picture the events since publication of the last Torch and to recapture that spirit- Tech Spirit so vitally a part of the class of 1946. We hope that we have succeeded in furnishing herewith a volume which will be a record of our class, a tribute to our school, and an inspiration to the classes which follow us. This year when the peace loving peoples of the world are striving to build a better world for tomorrow's generations, we are about to take our place and to make our contribution to that world. As we go forth, may the light of this Torch enable us to look backward with pride and forward with confidence. We came in Autumn's golden haze With youthful fire in us aglow We came-and sought through happy Clays For fun, for knowledge-now we go. The world-ah, turmoil rules it still But hope is surging in us now: We breast the steep of future's hill, We reach the crest-we humbly bow We offer-but our gifts are slight A contrite heart, abounding hope A firm conviction for the right A glowing strength to brest the slope Four years, the sand is running fast: Our destiny before us lies, We go to meet the World at last With dreams in visionary eyes We tremble, we who are so wise We who are brave, and wisefso wise, Pagr Tfwrnty-righ! Class Prophecy 1966 - Speeding to a landing in our atomic-powered amphibious areomobile at the alumni reception field, which is right alongside that masterpiece of architectural engineering, the Tech Gymnasium, we find Mayor Leonard Lann out in full dress to welcome us. Standing at his side is Iohn CScoopi Bentley, famous British columnist, here to write up the mo- mentous occasion. On our left the Kydd Brothers' nationally known band resoundingly strikes up the Alma Mater. Glancing about the field, our eyes sympathetically fall upon the poor, henpecked countenance of Bob Gilmore, quailing beneath the withering gaze of his wife, Doris CHawke-eyel Horsley. Suddenly our eyes are arrested by the sight of a voluminous burst of smoke and flame billowing out of a nearby building. What can it be? Oh yes, that must be Professor Iohn Comeford, doing one of his famous experiments. In one corner of the field we see Lawrence Bergman, wealthy tycoon, telling Angeline Donatello, stenographer, how he worked himself up through the Montville Paper Mill, which he now owns. Nearby we come across Louie Bisbara, president of the Wall Boys, Inc., pour- ing out his lamentations over the loss of their famous headquarters, the Wall , which has been demolished to make room for the beautiful new Tech athletic field. Iourneying to said field where a game is in progress, we find coaches Mike Manca and Gaspar Savona pacing those well worn sidelnes, as the peppy offsprings of Betty Costa, Louise Ripari and Irene Daputz cheer them on from the sidelines. From behind the goal- posts the faithful alumni, Frank DiMaggio, Harold Bartolucci and Bob Holder, give out with the sideline strategy. In the stands all female heads are turned towards the rear, where we find Tom O'Connor, still wowing 'em with that handsome visage. Wending our way downtown, we discover that Lawrence Ierome and Ellen Harris are co-starred in one of Eddie Charboneau's colossal productions, Doug and Dorothy , appear- ing at that exemplification of modern architecture, the New Empire Theatre. Purchasing our tickets from Eleanor Chirstensen, we pass by doorman Laurence Minson and stop to purchase programs from Dot Shaw. Upon being escorted to our seats by head usher Morton Nunes, we glance at our programs and note that they bear the mark of the Iames Fakourey grinting Co., Inc. ln the balcony are the nationally known critics, Dan Horen and Loraine anfield. Iourneying backstage we find make-up artist, Honora O'Neill, talking over old times with stage manager, Iohn Affeldt, and costume designer, Maria Pilecki. After the show we go to dine at Ray Loughman's exclusive State Street restaurant, lo- cated directly below Donald Patterson's Pool Room. Head Waiter Norman Potter is at the Fred Barber is entertaining with his card trickle. Waitress Genieva Daniels rushes over to door to greet us, and we are shown to our tabs an eye on things. A cute little cigarette girl, take our order, as bouncer Iimme Iengo keep over to our table, and over at the next table who turns out to be Delores Delaporta, comess. Fire Chief George Childs is making a tour of inspection. Upon the invitation of the manager we enter the kitchen, where we find Chef Ruth MacDougall slinging the hash, while over in the corner dishwashers Natalie Macomber and Arlene Lake are twirling the plates. As we leave through the massive portals, we notice Sergeant 'Iohn Corcoran of the police department presenting Arnold Fiebel with a ticket for speeding. Progressing farther down the sidewalk, we bump into Warren Bayreuther, wealthy lobster fisherman, busily en- gaged in conversation with Mert Ferguson, Iohn Yuhas and Sally Rice, President, Vice Presi- dent, and general operative, respectively, of the National Clam Diggers' Association. lust then Iane Searles whizzes by us on her way to Dot K. Sistare's beauty shoppe, to get beau- tified for her husband Bob's arrival. Further down the street we notice a shingle hanging from an elaborate office building. Frank Ferrigno, M.D. is the inscription. Going inside we find Ieanne Clark at the secre- tary's desk. In Doctor Frank's office we find Evelyn DeWolfe, trying to get a cure for her boy troubles, as nurse Viola Linden holds the hand of a handsome male patient. Glancing at the town clock, which incidently was made by Henry Mont1in's watch company, we note that the time is getting late. So, with a final glance at the dear old home town, we leave to board our areomobile, and as we zoom over the familiar countryside, our hearts are filled with pleasant memories of our high school days. This youth who invited her with no idea that she would accept had also invited his own girl friend, which complicates the situation and makes of the dormitory room where the girls are staying a series of unusual entrances and exits. The inevitable Blind Date contributes much to the humor of the situation. New assistant coach Chic Toomey proves a big help. With only three returning regulars, they struggled to turn a green team into an efficient combination capable of battling the season's strong opposition. After a late start and with little pre- game scrimmage, the Huskies faced a veteran Norwich team which had al- ready won three games. The Wildcats pushed us all over the field until the final period, when the desperate Tech men staged a last minute drive. Score 37-O. 1945-46 The next game we were hosts to Wind- ham, this time coming out on top 12-U. Tech recovered when Windham fumbled the kickoff, and a few plays later Holder bucked over for our first touchdown. Followed an exchange of punts until the fourth quarter, when Holder intercepted a pass. Two first downs later, Savona plunged over from the one to end the day's scoring. Fitch came to town the following week, gained their first victory over the Huskies. A Tech pass in the first period, seemingly good for a touchdown, was discounted by an offside penalty. Final score 13-O. l-lit the road to Stonington next week, unfortunately Stonington hit us to the tune of 9-0. The Huskies showed great improvement over the previous two games, outplayed the Bears during the second halt. The following week Weaver payed us a visit. Weaver, rated second in the state and heavily favored, was outgained by the Huskies on the ground. We seemed at a loss against their well perfected aerial attack, however, passes accounted A l 1945-46 for their four touchdowns. The Hartford team Went home With a 26-O victory. Then came the climax of the season, the annual tussel with Bulkeley. Although the Huskies piled up first down after first down, outqained Bulkeley in every sta- tistic, we came out on the short end of a 7-2 score. Tech gained its two points when Ken Perry tackled a Bulkeley man in the end zone for a safety. End Timmy Tengo and quard Patsy Cannamella won places on the All-Con- ference team. I Y i I I 1 I V i Next game we encountered a surprisingly strong Billard teamg not un- til the second halt did the Tech men turn on enough power to bring about a 44-26 Husky victory. Following this tussel, we faced the league leading Norwich Wildcats. Norwich led by a comfortable margin at the halt, it looked like an easy vic- tory tor them. Then a terrific Tech rally in the third period tied the score as the crowd went wild. lt was all in vain, however, tor a tew minutes later Norwich went ahead, and left the Huskies at the short end of a heartbreak- ing 42-4U score. P y Um' Hundrmi Tfwrlfve Later the same week, we gave a very poor showing against the home- town rival. Bulkeley led all the way to come out on top 4l-27. Entertaining Stonington in our next game, we broke back into the win column by turning back the visitors 45-40. After journeying over to the Fitch home court, the Tanagers avenged their earlier loss by defeating us 47-37. Our visit to Willimantic resulted ii defeat at the hands of the Whippets, 40-32. The Huskies lost their third straight game to Stonington on the Bears' home court, 39-3l. Our second game with Norwich resulted in another hard-fought battle, with the Wildcats again winning by a narrow margin, 3l-28. Entertaining Windham at the Y court, the Huskies showed improved form in turning them back 40-30. Our last game of the season against the home town rivals was another hard fought contest. Although the Huskies made some sensational long range shots in a fourth period rally, they were unable to make up for the large margin established by Bulkeley earlier in the game. Score 46-43. Thanks to Dates and the team for giving it all they had. Despite tough breaks and sickness, they maintained an undaunted spirit throughout the season. With two regulars returning next year, we look forward to more success. Ili l lrfil f IlIH'fI'l'lI Track The Huskies, led by Coach Herb Hendrickson, started the season off by entering the State Indoor Meet. lohnny Gentilella came in first in the mile run to establish a new indoor record forthe state. Time 4.53:3. Another stand- out was Charlie Christensen who placed third in the running broad jump. Tech placed fifth in the meet. The next meet was the Annual Connecticut Relays at the University of Connecticut. The Huskies took second place in the two mile relay. Next the boys defeated Bulkeley, our town rival, 62-37. Tech then trav- eled to Norwich and trounced the Academy by a score of 61-38. Taking to the road again for Storrs the Huskies competed in the Eastern Conference taking first place. By doing this Tech won its second champion- ship in three years. This also brought the Ted Lundwall Memorial to our trophy case. The State Meet was next which took place at Yale in New Haven. Gen- tilella took second in the mile while Frank Austin placed fourth in the mile. Thus ended a great season for a great team. Cross Country After a lapse of seven years, Chapman Tech again entered Cross Coun- try competition, under the direction of Coach Herb Hendrickson. Entertain- ing Norwich in their first meet, the Huskies were defeated 20-35 tLow score wins in Cross Country.l Captain George Benson was the first Tech man to cross the finish line. ln the second meet of the season, Tech defeated Bulkeley 24-31 over the Tech route. Tom McCarthy and George Benson came in first and second respectively. Visiting Stonington, the Tech Team lost a 24-31 decision, but McCarthy surprised by finishing in front of the star Stonington runner. With one of their best men not running, Tech finished fourth in the Con- ference meet at Norwich. Benson and Fialkowski were the first Tech men over the line. Tech won easily from Billard over their own route, 18-37. McCarthy and Fialkowski finished first and second respectively. With three top runners returning next year, we look forward to having a strong team. Our opening game was with Pratt High School at Morgan Park. Tech got 7 hits and 7 runs, two of which were homers by Andy Apicelli and Bill Tillet. Score 7-2. Tech registered its second straight victory by taking a l6-l decision over Fitch High School. Our third straight victory came by nosing out Stonington by a score of 3-2. ln our next game our city ,rival Bulkeley handed us our first defeat of the season. Score 7-4. Next the Huskies attacked F itch who surprised everyone by defeating Tech for the first time in baseball. The score 9-5. Tech then traveled to Willimantic to shut out Windham 4-O. Austin Dorr had the pitching assignment. ln our next game Norwich came down to shut out Tech 3-O. The Windham team traveled here to avenge an earlier defeat by Tech. Windham went home with an 8-l victory. Hitting the road for our second game with Norwich we lost a heart breaker. Score l-0. Our last game of the season was our Memorial Day with Bulkeley.
