Q., fm 74, Mr. Westcott, who for five years has directed the work of this school as our headmaster, deserves credit for the enlargement of the school plant, the increased use of our improved equipment, the gearing of our work to the emergency in which we are living, and the spirit of cooperation by which the school has made such notable progress. The Class of 1942 expresses gratitude for his leadership as well as for the happiest of personal relationships. CDUR I-IEADMASTER Qfmm AWWM QCOIMQI4, fl. It was Mr. Roman whose inspiration and energy brought into being the 1939 year-book, after publication had lapsed eleven years. In 1940 and 1941 great improvements were made under his leadership, while he was creating and building a most efficient and productive aft department which the school had long needed. Because of his initiative, planning, forceful direction, uncounted hours of labor, and unlimited confidence in his colleagues and students, we proudly dedicate to Mr. Roman the 1942 edition of We 70404 WE I-IEREBY DEDICATE. Pbolrzgmphy Editor AdI'614If.lif7lg Editor Aimriate Edilw' DAVID SPENCER IRIDA BUSCA FRANCES KOTOLUP Perhaps no project which the school undertakes requires more painstaking effort, more versatile gifts of talented students, more widespread use of all departments in the school, and a larger contact with the community which the school tries to serve, than does the publication of this record of school activities. After twenty years of wandering on the sea of life, my ship finally docked at the famous Port of New London. Nothing had changed much since the early days of the whaling ships, or the later age of whale stories and my adventuresome youth in high school. From' the deck of my ship I watched the Coast Guard officers, Edwin Taylor and Chris Bayreuther, helping the customs officers, Ralph Gray and Neil Beebe, checking the baggage. Later I learned that Donald Howard is still in the Academy, hoping either to graduate or to join Lloyd's of New London. As I walked along the wharf to the station, I was fas- cinated by a large electric sign inviting me to inspect Irida's Tropical Fish -The Best Money Can Buy. Dodging Pilecki's Flying Taxis, I crossed the expan- sive parade, and stopped for tea in a swank dress salon on State Street operated by Alice Luzi, Hilda Dragoli, and Virginia Ceccarelli. Draped over the furniture were the glamorous models, Barbara Gilmore, Marjorie Holmes, and Mollie Kydd, exhausted trying to persuade Virginia Bloomere that the New York creations might some day equal hers. At the head of State Street is a perpetually moving steel monument dedicated to the now famous chemists, Frances Kotolup, Bart Scarpa and james Powers, whose researches in chemicals mixed too well and blasted them out of town. In front of the monument on what is known as the auctioneer's ramp may be seen the incredible Ken Hollister, attorney-at-law, try- ! ing to sell Elizabeth MacKen- zie's last Holstein. Q!! ln the old Starr Brothers Pharmacy, now known as La Petite Pharmaceutical Shoppe of Brooks, Morth, Larson, and Shontell, I found Tom Murphy reading Clarence Martin's latest mystery, Mercedes Stops Speaking. Murphy will be pensioned next month, together with Morris LaVolpicelo, who has spent a profitable twenty years experimenting with Dr. Allen Maynard's prescriptions. Head waitress Mary Kuzmich directed Marie Gay and Henrietta Pukas to take my order. I was amused watching Bill Brains Codd put up an order for an attractive nurse who signed herself Anna Grippo, R. N.. and called for Codd's Special Brain Food, Codd's A-B-C-D capsules, Codd's Little Liver Lozenges, and Codd's Liver Oil. When I stepped again to the street, I was intercepted by Laura Treat who wanted me to make a statement for the Sunday edition of Strat Hawley's Daily Dozen. I had scarcely fin- ished the interview when Ken Bishops trafhc whistle stopped me at the curb and kept me from colliding with Basilica's Coffee Car, featuring doughnuts with insulated handles. I followed the crowds down Bank Street to the New Empire Building towering seventy stories above our heads. The show house had changed little: episode 2246 of The Perils of Blondie Edwards w as advertised, the gallery was crowded, few orchestra seats appeared above the peanut husks, Eleanor Hogan Etiled to appear in person, Bea Huntley collected the rain checks after the first reel was finished, and Thurston Perry used the other sixty-nine floors to train ushers which he may some day need. Satisfied, I followed Machinists Mate George Droney back to the ship and sailed away on another twenty year Odyssey. Our class has been outstanding in competitive sports, and in the presentation of the comedy, Weather - Clearing. In these activities we have gained a repu- tation among spectators and audiences, if not with our schoolmates. George Tyropolis has succeeded Edwin Keeney as president in the junior year elections. The other offices are now filled by the following: Doris Carroll, vice-president, Teresa Vivirito, secretaryg and George Hendry, treasurer. Forgotten while in school perhaps, but the Class of 1943 is now determined to make our membership achieve things Tech will never forget. 5 erm ,Maw The Class of 1944 is still marching forward with its large and famous enroll- ment. In our freshman days, we adopted the school routine and feeling of good will which will always prevail in our organization. Some of our class showed fine acting ability in the Freshman play, Not Quite Such a Goose. Many of the boys and girls have taken an active part in clubs, sports, and other school activities. As sophomores, our class published the Tech News,', which has increased in popularity and importance under our guiding influence. We shall proceed, as a class group, to exert our influence and conquer new fields in our junior and senior years. gawkmm 64744 Besides having the distinction of being the largest class to enter Chapman Tech, the Class of 1945 has many outstanding qualities. We have shown athletic ability by placing many of our members on the basketball and football teams. Our freshman basketball team enjoyed a successful season, having sus- tained only one defeat. Our social activities have included a Christmas party and Hallowe'en dance, both of which were highly successful. We are an ambitious 450 pupils with unlimited energy, lots of ability, and plans that will make our reputation shine. It was only natural that the Huskies should have one off year after winning three championships in the past five years and finishing in the runner-up spot two other times. Even at that, the Huskies were in the thick of the running for the crown up until the final game when Bulkeley Schoo1's state championship team made up a half-time deficit of 7-6 to crush the Conwaymen, 25-7, on the strength of a couple of long runs and two cleverly executed forward passing plays. The Huskies weren't ex ected to be a cham ionshi threat from the start, P but they might have been except for an unfortunate circumstance. You can't ex ect to lose nine out of 11 starters from a cham ionshi team and ex ect to P P P P go places, but Coach Conway did -that is, he did until he lost the services of Co-Captain john Occhionero. Occhionero was a great defensive center and an inspirational leader the year before and was counted on to do the same this season. But he reported to Coach Conway on the first day of practice and told the Tech mentor he was 19 years of age. Under the new state schoolboy rules, which went into effect last fall, Occhionero was ineligible for further athletic competition. 47 The figured loss of Occhionero would have been bad enough, but to have it come like a bombshell was even more of a blow. Conway and his assistants, Ted Lundwall and George Bennett, took the blow philosophically and started to lay new plans. p The team won its first game from Windham, 14-6, but was outclassed by a heavier Norwich Free Academy team in the second game and bowed, 13-0. Came a scoreless tie contest with Shelton High and then the Huskies played superb football to trounce Robert Fitch, 16-6. Stoningtonls classy Bears proved too strong for the Huskies in the fifth game of the season and the Red and Black went down to a 20-0 defeat, but the team played grand football in the first half of the Bulkeley game and left the field at half-time with a 7-6 advantage over a Tiger squad that was a 14-1 choice before game-time. The Bengals came back strong in the second half to triumph, 25-7, and take the conference title away from the Huskies. Tech placed Mike Kamierzia, star end, on the all-conference team, its only place on the all-star team. Prospects for next season are reasonably bright with a number of experienced players coming back. The boys won't be caught short next year and ought to be a strong contender for the crown. From a methodical, conservative club that could generally move the ball through any type of defense, the Huskies switched to the new streamlined type of fire-engine basketball. The change in style was made by Conway because of necessity, and the switch paid dividends, Tech winning 13 out of 17 games played. Few expected the Huskies to more than break even in their scheduled games, but before the year was over the Conwaymen had split even with favored Bulkeley, upset Stonington and bowed twice only to Wfindham, unbeaten Eastern Connecticut conference champions for the third season. Highlight of the season, in addition to the Bulkeley and Stonington victories, was the 44-11 victory over Putnam Trade on February 13, a triumph that marked the 200th victory in Conway's basketball coaching career at Tech. The Tech coach's 14-year record at the close of the season showed 200 victories and 42 losses. The season opened with a double header, the varsity demonstrating how basket- ball should be played to the Faculty, 43-13, in the opener and then taking Chester, 60-12, in the nightcap. Headmaster Horace G. Westcott started in the Faculty lineup and shot the first basket of the night, retiring from the game thereafter to maintain his 1,000 shooting average. Tech closed its pre- Christmas schedule by beating Fishers Island, 44-11. Warming up to the heavy part of the slate, Tech drubbed Bacon Academy of Colchester, 46-6, and then took Willimantic Teachers' jayvees, 36-27. Nor- wich, first of the league opponents, fell, 30-13, and Fitch followed to the tune of 54-21. Windham, having its best night of the season, proved the first stumbling block for the Huskies, who bowed, 52-23, at the Y gym. Recovering quickly from the Windham defeat, the Huskies surprised their home town rivals, the Bulkeley Tigers, 30-24, in the den of the Bengals, and then proceeded to trounce New London junior College, 41-23, Norwich, 27- 21, and Fitch, 42-27, before bowing again to Windham, this time by 28-19 in a hotly contested ball game. The Huskies then upset a favored Stonington team, 33-29, and notched the 200th victory for Conway by routing Putnam Trade, 44-11. Bulkeley, clicking beautifully in the fourth quarter, topped the Red and Black, 34-23, in the Y gym, and the Huskies closed their season by losing to Kennett High of Con- way, N. H., by a score of 30-29. For a team that started the season with only one veteran in Captain Lester Soltz, the Huskies fared remarkably well. Coach Conway has had far better teams than this one, but none of which he'll ever feel prouder. The Tech Freshmen had a very successful season under Ted Lundwall and George Bennett, losing only one of 13 games and winning the conference title for the third year in succession. The lone defeat was a one point affair at the hands of Bulkeley and the Tech yearlings secured ample revenge in the second game, winning, 40-32. SHERMAN, SERos, Lfxzuk, FoRTuNE, lNlARNlT'I'T 74602 Like old man river, Chapman Tech's track forces under Coach Ted Lundwall, just seem to keep rolling along in dual competition. The Huskies closed out their second unbeaten campaign in dual competition in 1941 and wound up the ear in a blaze of tlor b trimmini Bulkele for the first time since Y Y is Y Lundwall was a com etitor back in 1933. P The Huskies didn't win the conference championship because they didn't have the specialty men needed to win league flags in a six-team meet, but they knocked off every team in the circuit in dual meets with the exception of unscheduled Norwich and Stonington, which tied the Huskies, 52-52. The Huskies placed fifth in the conference meet behind Norwich, Bulkeley. XXfindham and Stonington, but they were only a few points in back of the second place Tigers. And the dual meet victory over the Bengals caused Tech rooters to forget the results of the league meet. Track has been improving by leaps and bounds LlI'1LlCI' Lundwall's capable direction and ought to reach the peak this season. If everything goes as L L planned, the Red and Black has fine prospects in the 1942 campaign of win- ning its first league championship since 1932. The Huskies lost the services of their captain, Ray Bloomfield, on the opening day of the track season when it was learned that Bloomfield had secured an afternoon job, but the Red and Black went right out and whipped favored Billard Academy and Robert Fitch in a triangular meet, scoring 7016 points as compared to Billard's 47 and Fitch's 231Q. Next the Huskies deadlocked Stonington in a thrilling meet, 32-52, and then came the conference competition. After the league meet, Tech trimmed Wiimd- ham, 53 2-3 to 45 1-3 and Bulkeley, 53 1-3 to 45 2-3, and might have done the same to championship Norwich had the meet not been rained out. va .L.,.., .X... . ,,,.., Bari Rnu'fRoss1, ANNABALINI, COLE, STOFFEL, E. Capmn: Sucnowmskv, KEFNFY, CHIAPPONE Although the Huskies enjoyed a fairly successful season with seven wins and four losses and finished in a tie for the runner-up spot in the Eastern Connecti- cut conference race, the story of the season might have been an entirely different one with the injection of a few timely basehits. Only one of the four losses was by a convincing margin, the championship Norwich Free Academy team toppling Tech, 12-5, in an early season game that caught George Malone, ace pitcher, out of condition. Two other defeats were by two-run margins and the fourth was a 6-5 setback at the hands of Bulkeley, a defeat that snapped all titular hopes. The Huskies opened their campaign in impressive fashion by manhandling Stonington, 14-2, Ken Osinski contributing a home run to the li-hit attack, but Norwich did most of the slugging in the next game as the Red and Black bowed, 12-5. From a slugging team, the Huskies fell back to a defensive club in the next three games, topping Bulkeley, 2-1, blanking Griswold of jewett City, 2-0, and being shut out in turn by XXfindham, 2-0. ln the latter game, the Huskies left nine runners stranded and two timely singles would have produced an easy victory. Tech secured ample revenge a week later by whipping Xlifindham, I0-6, as Ken Osinski clinched the verdict with a tremendous home run clout over the left field fence in the eighth inning. Osinski's two homers that produced six runs helped the Huskies edge Stonington, 10-9, a few days later and then the Conwaymen had another close battle with Fitch, winning, 3-2, on the strength of some nifty relief pitching by George Davison. One week later, the Red and Black buried Fitch, 12-2, in a tune-up for the Bulkeley game, which the Huskies dropped, 6-5, when Bob Voight homered with a mate on base in the eighth inning. The linal game against Norwich saw the Huskies just going through the motions of winding up another campaign. Shorn of their championship hopes, the team played listless ball for seven innings and then fell two runs shy of tying the score in the final two frames, bowing by a 5-3 count. Captain Mike Ryzewic, Ken Osinski and George Davison were named to the all-conference team, while Harold Bellucci, the team's steadiest ball player in the eyes of most followers, won a second team berth. Prospects for this season are only fair with Captain James Powers, John Stefan- ski and Peter Suchowirsky as the lone players with any real previous experience. But Coach jack Conway is pretty good at moulding winning teams from virtu- ally nothing and 1942 may not be such a bad year after all. STEFANSK 0 CONNOR AD K.
